• My second bike (First one with my money)

So my discover 100 has ran into boring issues and I am thinking of replacing the 4 year old bike (34k on the odometer).

1. Budget - INR 100k
2. Height - 5'11
3. Weight - 70 kgs
4. Intended usage - Mostly office commute
5. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) - 50-55 would make me happy
6. City & Highway percentage usage - 99% city
7. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - about 900-1000 kms a month
8. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing) - Chennai

Went for TD and shortlisted these bikes:

1. Gixxer - Looks stunning and the engine beat is superb. After the Duke I love the sound of this bike. Found gear shifting to be hard (maybe I am not used to such gears since the Discover has normal ones). The pickup and handling were excellent. Being the first time to drive a sports bike I had no fear, rather the bike gave me so much confidence. Mileage mentioned was 53-55

2. CB Unicorn 160 - Managed to get a long test drive. Man the pick up was amazing equivalent to Gixxer. The ride was smooth and there was almost no nice. But the looks are a downer. I have no idea about its mileage. Showroom people mentioned 55.

3. FZS Fi - After hearing to a lot of people about the bike, it turned out to be a disappointment. The pickup was not close to the other two. Gear shifting was a little better than Gixxer and I have heard Yamaha never gives good mileage. Couldnt test the handling.

I am more inclined towards Honda or Suzuki since I have service centre in walking distance from my house. Can you help me make a wise decision as well as let me know the maintenance cost of the above bikes like how often to change oil and service extra (i.e. after warranty and free services are used up). I drive around 40 kms per day and drive time would be 50-60 mins each way.

as far as I know my lecturer has a been using his bike (cb unicorn) for nearly a year with daily 60 km commute (highway and city ) and he tells leaving oil change and tyres there is nothing that can come under maintanance, build quality of bikes from Honda is excellent since Honda bikes are there in india for ages go ahead with Honda cb unicorn you won't repent buying it regarding mileage she should give a healthy 50-55kmpl with 60-70kmph speeds.I have no idea about gixxer.wear a helmet always ride safe cheers

The UNI 160 was launched in the 3rd week of December 2014. Maybe, he is using the older Uni 150.

Coming back to the query. There is little to differentiate between Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha when it comes to build, quality and smoothness.
Gixxer is surely a good bike with refreshing looks. But, the pillion seat seems to be a little high and short on length.
Uni 160 is a calm and composed ride. Has a matured feel about it.
FZ2.0 is surely an eye-catcher. Has the FI in it so the FE is bound to be better than the FZ1.0. Its a little low on power but since you will be riding mostly within the city, that shouldn't matter much.

Re: My second bike (First one with my money)

All these three bikes kinda fall into the premium 150cc category. And in this category fuel efficiency is not exactly the prime concern. Only the Unicorn 160 will be able to give you 50+ kmpl figures in the city (In chennai peak traffic even that is hard to assure). Gixxer and FZ FI hardly manage 45kmpl inside city. Both Yamaha and Suzuki service are not great always so make sure you get it serviced in the good one after researching about them. Honda also has some issues but far better than the other two Japs.

If you are keen on 50-55kmpl its better to go with 125cc motorcycles. Because most of the 150cc bikes today cannot manage 50+ easily inside city. Particularly in bumper to bumper traffic.

100-110cc-65-68kmpl

150-160cc-45-48kmpl
161-180cc-40-42kmpl
200-225cc-35-38kmpl.

Re: My second bike (First one with my money)

My discover gives me 60kmpl with constant speeds of 50-60. I dont drive in bumper to bumper traffic. Very rarely this happens. I take side roads and lanes to avoid all this. So mileage of 45-50 is also fine.

My sister owns the Suzuki Access for 4 years now and we have never had any issues with service here.

I showed these bikes to my parents and they are against sports bike because of the pillion seat. I personally feel that the Unicorn looks old fashioned and I am not sure how i can convince my parents for a stylish bike. They are like in case of emergency how can we use the bike, the back seat is like sitting on LIC building and they can't even get on it

Buy your parents a stepping stool along with the bike. At least when they leave from home and come back you can be rest assured they will not face any issues with the bike. :P

Jokes apart, I would suggest you keep the disco around for a while, if it is manageable to use occasionally.

How you will convince your parents? Take them to the show room, go puppy-dog-eyes on them. Nothing like a grown man with puppy-dog-eyes. They will remember your childhood days and melt like butter on a hot plate. They may even gift you the bike. :P

Jokes apart - Why do you need to convince them to spend your own money? Come on. It is your first bike with your own money. You should be making yourself happy. Get your parents a car for emergencies. Or call them a cab. Or hire a driver. So many solutions. Treat yourself to the bike of your desires.

But do remember to put money aside for good riding gear - Gixxer or not.

Happy biking!

Why are you suggesting a faired one? I personally dont like faired bikes and most of my use is within city.

He clearly said 99% city use. How is top speed even relevant? Plus faired bikes are hard to filter through traffic. And faired bikes also heat up a lot in crawling traffic. Especially the air cooled ones.

If you like the Gixxer go for it. But if one of your parent will be on the pillion seat often then I recommend the Unicorn 160. Everything is comparable to the Gixxer except looks. The Unicorn looks a little bland and Honda always gives boring colours. The red colour looks decent though.

To add my 2 cents...

Gixxer - Go for it, Looks, performance, Mileage, A.S.C is all good (where In Chennai are you planning to take it )
Unicorn - Calm, Serene...Doesnt make heads turn like a Gixxer to take a 2nd look (IMO). Good city commuter-type-comfort for pillion as well. Honda reliability is known to all.

Like quoted by others...If you are going to be using it for your personal use day-to-day - to work or to college, Get Gixxer ( I would prefer the blue one though)
R15S - Current
Honda Dio - Current

madhav766 Even though its my money I believe in deciding along with my parents. They have brought me up and I always get their permission to buy anything even though it is my money. They will always think logically and in my best interests.
The Archer84 I stay near to Walltax Road. Very close to Roonwal Suzuki and Balaji Honda. Majority of my usage will be commuting to work which is about 40 kms to and fro. My parents hardly use my bike just in case of emergency like when their bike (Jupiter) is gone for service. The thing is my dad can drive discover but i dont think he will be comfortable driving Gixxer.
