Spiti is a cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalayan region in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh, India. In winters it is called the place of white gold as it is completely covered with Snow. I,(Puneet joshi part of winops Team) after an adventurous and exiting trip to ladakh, was missing the adrenaline rush, a bike ride could give. As an ardent bike rider, although I used to make frequent off-roading trips, but none was giving me a sense of satisfaction. At that time I came to know about spiti which seemed to be tough and dangerous. I asked my previous companion from ladakh trip but due toe of my friend agree for prior commitments none could accompany me. However one of my friend agreed for this adventurous trip.
I zeroed in to some of the basic things. I might need to carry with. And this was as difficult task as the travel itself. After read number of travel blogs and get myself familiar with the conditions of roads, weather, people and what not. Incidentally and thankfully was finished on the day I had to leave for spiti. With all the gears up including gloves, riding jacket, boots, and carry bag.
I started my journey with my companion on 17th March at 11 PM from NH1 and rode for 1 hour. We took halt to fuel ourselves. After checking bike we again started our journey taking shorter halts at every 300 KM. We reached Kufri on the next day at 18 March. On the way towards Kufri we met an accident which was narrow escape. This time at Kufri, roads are occupied with black Ice- A black ice is nothing but normal snow which in absence of direct sunlight becomes hard and due to dirt becomes slippery as well.
We were on our normal course when suddenly the driver ahead of me applied breaks but due to black ice his car instead of stopping slipped. I too had to applied sudden brakes but couldn’t stop my bike hitting the car bumper which eventually led to mudguard of my bike coming off. Hoverer I escaped unhurt.
After riding 450 KM from Delhi we reached Narkanda, which is around 80 KM from Shimla. It was around 2 PM and we were starving and were sleep deprive as well. We look out for some hotel nearby and decided to stay in one of them. We had some great lunch there and after getting some rest we went to explore the Hatu Peak, where we witness a real magnificent view of snow clad roads and trees. After spending some time with nature we returned to our hotel where it was already chill making us freeze. On 19 March we started for Rekong-Peo. It was 7 Am in the morning and I noticed that water I was used to clean on my bike was suddenly freeze. During our ride to Peo we stopped couple of times to capture beauty of nature there we saw few dams on the way. Around 2 PM we reached our destination Rekong-Peo and searched a good hotel for stay. After getting fresh we go out for a walk and there was wonderful experience there. We checked temperature over there and it was -1*C , just few KM away from Rekong-peo there is one more hill Station called Kalpa .
Spending night at Rekong-Peo next morning on 20th March we pack our bags and move to our destination KAZA . On the way to kaza we face difficulties such black ice , shooting stones from hills but we manage to cross all that. Finally around 8 PM we reached KAZA there we face another challenge the temperature goes down to -10*C and everywhere on road there was ice. We manage to find homestay over there had out dinner went for sleep.
In the morning the condition was worst water was so cold that we were unable to wash our hands properly and on our bikes there was snow. It takes around 10 min to start our bikes because of extreme cold weather. But it was awesome experience for me to visit KAZA.
After spending some time in Kaza we packed our bags for our returning. It takes 3 days to reach Delhi. It was another good experience after ladakh bike trip in Spiti valley.
