So please cut the guy some slack, and tell him what to look for, instead of scaring the shit out of him.

Sir, there are many illegal bikes in the country and the best way to deal is to find a lawyer who specializes in this or get a photocopy of the RC and then take it to RTO. With a few bucks to some clerk in RTO you can figure out the authenticity of it. I might not be completely right but i don't have any other advice that does not border on paranoia.

    Good luck then.
find a lawyer ? A lawyer who will charge him 30k just for doing that job. Not to mention many lawyers now know of the DRI scene and will tell u right at the beginning that they may not be able to help but will yet charge u their fees.
I am not scaring him away...he is looking out for an R1 which will cost him 7 to 8 lacs because the owner is gonna say its legal. He can get an official bike in that price. How about a Ducati Monster ?
I am really not being gay. I am just being blunt when putting forth that the unofficial bikes come with so much of trouble its just best not buying them AT ALL if you dont kow what you are doing. This guy is perhaps a bike enthusiast with dreams of having a nice bike...he will have saved up 7 to 8 lacs for the last 7 to 8 years maybe...he must be having sleepless nights thiking about swinging his leg accross a superbike saddle. I want to safegaurd his dream..I want him to have a nice bike which he can enjoy and not end up in tears.

Its an R1 with a chinese rossi replica fairing. Why did the owner change the fairing ? did it crash ? if it did why couldnt he get a fairing from yamaha India ? Is it official ? If its unofficial it will be registered on ABC will have been imported by XYZ and will be ridden by PQR. Are you getting the drift ? The want for a dream machine sometimes can overwhelm us and it is important to be direct and blunt.

@OP : you can buy the R1 u r talking of if your risk apetite permits you to do this. Usually that means if this R1 gets wrecked after u buying it would you be able to buy another one the next day ? If yes...then buy this r1..dont bother about the papers and just hope u get lucky and that the bike hasnt been crashed before. If not...dont buy anythig unofficial..your money is wayyyyy tooo hard earned to invest in anythign like this and its better u either stretch your budget o accomodate an official buy or go for the Ducati Monster or Honda CB1000R or a bandit or something.

P.S : Although I love being an azzhole I am not being that right now. There is no way you will get the picture untill u see its dark sides. And maybe thats coming accross to you as me being a dickhead.
Recently a guy from banglore bought an R6 in Pune and was riding it down back to banglore. Guess what ? The cops on NH17 were awaiting him and his bike. They tried stopping him once...they guy throttled his way out of it...only to be caught in another, bigger, cop net a few 100 kms further down the road. A few blows to the guy and the bike gets confiscated. Who tipped the cops ? The owner ? The dealer who imported the bike ? A friend ? Who cares ? It doesnt matter no more. This is how thing can end with unofficial bikes. Do you wanna spend ur hard earned money for this ? Do u wanna buy worries or do u wanna buy a bike ? I have an unofficial bike myself. I could easily talk good of them and say its not a big deal. But that would be being an azzhole :P

I would put the 7-8L as downpayment towards a new superbike of your choice and pay EMIs on the balance.

      Peace of mind
Manufacturer warranty of not less than 2 years
      Spares, Service and Support
Full comprehensive Insurance (you wanna know how many people have needed this???)
      No panga with DRI/RTO
      Registration is easy and clean
      Better resale value

I don't like machines with questionable history which is why I always buy new. I'm not advocating it as a practice but in this case alarm bells are ringing.

no offences meant or taken brother. and in no way implying you gay, or any lifestyle choice thereof.

Just that the guy wants a second hand bike, he asks for what to look, let's tell him what to look. Let's assume he is smart enough to figure out what is right or wrong. RTO can tell him whether the bike is registered or not. as far as the bike being in a crash is concerned i suggest he go visit the bike with a mechanic who handles such kind of bikes. or takes the bike there.

These are the pitfalls of buying any bike, imported or indian, and you have to be cautious, i admit that, what am trying to tell here is not every bike being sold is a grey import. He can take a calculated risk and do all his homework.

or like you suggested go for a monster or like the other gentleman suggested go for EMI option. Lets leave that choice to him. Lets just give him the options and info that is asked.
and let's not get offensive or defensive. it is a weekend. cheers.

Found this somewhere....Pasting it here, thought might be helpful.

                  1. Never buy a used superbike that only has a registration papers! This can be bought just by paying a bribe. This also applies to places like maharashtra where there are smart card systems. A smart card or an RC with the bikes name, owner and other description doesn't mean its a legal bike!

                  2. A genuine superbike will have two important documents among all other papers: A bill of landing and an invoice price sheet that assesses the price of the bike and its respective taxes. The bill of landing is the proof a vehicle entered legally into the country. It is a big piece of paper, about the size of a newspaper that is folded into two or four folds.

When someone wishes to sell you a bike, first ask if they have BILL OF LANDING! If they don't, then don't even bother looking at the bike

                  3. The invoice paper has a determined value of the bike. Make sure that in the invoice has atleast Rs. 2 lakhs (about $ 5 to 6K) paid in duty if the bike was brought in used. This prevents any form of trouble in the future, because it ensures that the duty paid was reasonable, depending up the used bike's life. Again, read above, AT LEAST 2 lakhs or above. So the invoice price can be higher as well.

                  4. Now, someone says that the bike does not have bill or landing, or invoice sheet, but they may say that they have DRI clearance. Now what does this mean? This means that DRI had confescated the bike, but the owner was compelled to get it back, by paying the appropriate taxes and fines. This makes sense because there's no point in DRI keep the bike for themselves and letting it rot. The DRI therefore, issues a clearance certificate where it clearly expresses the taxes paid, including the fine. When you see the clearance certifcate, please check with DRI is all the info is true. The DRI has offices across all metro and this can be verified.

                  VERY IMPORANT

                  5. And lastly, here's soemthing to keep in mind. Let's say you are buying a used SBK, such as a 2007 suzuki gsx R 600. This recently got sold in AP for 6.5 L recently. The ex-shoroom price of this bike is about $ 8.5K new (about 4.5 L). With 105% duty, that brinks the bike upto 9 to 9.5L on road in india after registrations, taxes etc. So its three years old, so considering basic depreciation of 15%, 12% and 10% for the past three years, the best buying prices of the bike would be (approximate estimate locally) 8.1 L in 2008, 7.15 L in 2009 and 6.45 L in 2010. This makes sense because the proper clean paper gsxr 600 sold for 6.5 lakhs recently! So any value below this, you have to become aware of the shadiness that's prevalent with the bike. You have many guyz quoting 5 to 6 L for these 600cc bikes and you can bargain for a low 5 L..but you won't end up with a clean bike.

Please note that CBU bikes sold officially through dealerships in India DO NOT come with Bill of Landing. I think this is retained by the RTO where the vehicle has been registered prior to delivery.
