  • My R6 Track Experiences

    Hey all,
Havent posted here in a while, so though i should revisit. Summer is finally here, however complete dry days are not always guaranteed in the north western part of the US. I recently made a trip to Oregon Raceway Park (Oregon Raceway Park | Grass valley, Oregon | The Future of Racing in the Pacific Northwest). One of the best track out there, 400 feet of elevation changes, off camber turns. I was on my 06 R6 and my friend with the camera had a 06 GSRX 750. The bigger bike had the advantage on the uphill and front straight, but the rest of the track was pretty technical and even matched.
    Thanks.

You sold ur r6 man???? waaa??? whyy????

Man its such a rush driving on the track. I recamend ANY superbike owner to take it to the track and feel the rush. Since on the street you cant even get your tires hot enough to give full grip the track is the place. Revs are always high and you are truly tested on your abilities. Body positions, lines and skill all come down. I actually feel like I am pushing the bike than just my abilities, its a crazy feeling. Started touching my knee down in a few corners and then dragging knee the rest of the day. I could feel the bigger bore bikes get faster on some parts but when the course is so technical a light 600 is just the tool you need. Now every time i see people with big ass chicken strips, i tell me to go to the track asap :P

Looks like a track for 600. A 1000cc will be a sitting duck on this track. I love such tracks.
            Beautiful track. Awesome corners.

Were you there with a riding school or was it a bunch of friends having fun on the track ?
Also if I may ask, are you struggling to hit some apexes ?

            More track vids please

Nope it was just a regular track day no school. I started in the C group and they do school you for a bit, but then i started moving up my pace and got into the b group. PSSR is the track organization and they charged $325 for two days at the track. I wasn't having problems hitting apexes, my main problem was entry speed, if there wasnt anyone infront of me i would generally enter the corner slower than i could have. Thats just experience and confidence, so iam trying to get there slowly. I really fell in love with my bike all over again. It feels so much different than riding on street. Tires feel soooo different when hot.

Pilot Powers 2CTs. They got a dual compound, soft on the sides and hard in the middle. I've had em for about 3 track days and about a 1000 street miles, feel good as new.

Yeah man. I had racked by 16k miles on it, thought i would sell it before it loses value. Got a 2010 R1. Bloody hell, i dint last 2 days without a bike.

For some reason, i fear taking my own babied bike to the track. The fear of dumping it scares the shit out of me. Hopefully some day i will gather some courage and do a track day.
Really admire you guys for hitting the track. For a second i feel like doing it and then i back out. sometime blaming the cost of going to the track or cost of repairs in a "what if" situation.
I love hitting the canyons down here in Arizona, although i know the cost of dumping it on these roads is probably gonna be more.
Just cant get myself to do it.
                    some day.....

                    anyway, props to you man.

If you switch onto power ones and wait untill they warm up you will begin riding with an aura of invincibility around you. 2CTs are good too ofcourse for the kind of riding we do. I used 2CT for 2 days and then power ones for the next 3 days at a 5 day stint at the track and thats when I was experimenting with psi levels and everything. The world of tyre and traction opened up to me for the first time then and I feel like a changed person since then..from within . Gotta love the track !

Carlitos start your track carrer with a CSS school session..thats the best gift you can give your R1. I did that and my fear of crashing at the track has been abolished. I fear the streets way more even though the speeds are way higher on the track

Honestly dude i feel the best thing you could do with an R1 is take it to the track. It is the safest place to drive honestly, especially with the way people drive here. And after my 2nd track day (1st one was in the wet) i feel so much calmer driving on the street. My survival reactions are so quiet, i feel like iam a much safer and relaxed driver because i know if this right hander on the street turns into an decreasing radius turn, i can still make it. I came to Arizona a while back, i might transfer my college there. Especially since you have more sun than rain.

I was thinking about the pures but since i ride on the street as well i got the 2 CTs. I never feel the urge to drive fast on the street even tough iam a much safer rider now. The track is just so addicting, iam hitting up the local track (PIR) on the 20th. Cant wait for it. I am also looking into some track dot tires. My friend on the 750 got them and he felt much more comfortable. However one of my buddies got slicks on his 1000RR and told me he could lean the bike much further than he though was possible. I dont know if i want to get track day DOTs or just straight up slicks or maybe even take offs from a track day ?

if you boys like those power one's and 2 ct's for grip , do yourself a favour and ride on brand new dunlop NTEC slicks atleast once in your life to undestand how good tyres can actually get. they are the same ones used for moto 2 races.

after riding on them for my first race outing , i can happily say that on a well set up bike, they are the absolute holy grail of tyres!! like Mecca for the rider, you have to visit them atleast once in your life.

After scrubbing them in, i was in and out of turn 3 which is the fastest at PI so fast that my braking marker was stuffed up, dropped to my normal gear for the next turn, had the rear lock up and jump around but happily controlled it with a big smile on my face!

the down side is , they are expensive. 775 AUD for a set! and the rear lasted 2 days max @ 480 AUD. and the best grip only lasts for the first 3 odd sessions.

hey csgup1 ! I am in Melbourne since 2 weeks now. If i wanna do a track day at philip islands what would be the approximate dough that I am gonna have to shell out ?
Here till 7th July and I am not really sure if I can fit in a track day untill then..I am just pressing my luck real hard to see if there is any chance me getting the time to do a track day at PI !

                              Thanks !
