  • Do you have a radiator guard?

I am have been bitten twice now. And saved in the nick of time. Once before the Great Indian Roadrip in 2006 when my Fireblade flushed out its entire coolant in the middle of the road and in heavy traffic due to a stone hurled up maybe by a vehicle ahead, or even my own bike's front tyre, puncturing its radiator.

This was a day before the trip was about to start.

The second time it was in New Zealand. The mighty Concours 14's radaitor was punctured, once again by a stone out of nowhere and in the middle of nowhere. I was miraculously saved by a car repair with a mseal kind of agent.

But trust be, busting your radiator is an expensive and irritating thing, specially if it happens in the middle of a nice ride.

The solution is to have a Radiator Guard installed which will keep the stones and other animated in flight objects at bay.

This is specially required for a place like India with a lot of loose gravel. And to think of it I haven't even got it as yet!

One of the links to buying it is here: Cox Racing Group | Motorcycle radiator guard | bike parts and accessories

Doesnt it impair airflow to the radiator? I bet we can get a local channi type made which can do the job.
Locking the front and flipping is the worst experience you could err experience.

I remember PC Saketh having a radiator guard on his R1. I do not have one and have not used one. I think with the existing heating issues of the R1, I would think many times over before putting on a radiator guard! On the 06 model, I could have ventured to put one... but not on 07 or 08 since it is the same model. The 06 did not have so many heating issues. Phew!

Ken, the heat wont be an issue once the radiator is punctured. Actually even i realized how necessary it is once it happens. The guard anyways wont be blocking the air flow whatsoever, it has a decent gap between the radiator and it has large enough gaps in the mesh to allow smooth airflow.

        @manav: maybe in the r15, but on a r1 at 250kmph?

With the radiator guard specially on R1 07-08 it could be really tricky but as sunny mentioned without the guard also it could be the same............I have seen fins bent on my 08 due to those rocks and feels really bad.......

Continuing on the same OT vein, I doubt if you will puncture your radiator on the Kari speedway secondly, I doubt if you will reach 250 on the Kari speedway!

I totally agree on the radiator guard issue. But it will definitely be a cool breeze impediment. And hearing your broken radiator issues, it certainly sends a chill down the spine.

Like ken said getting back on topic.

I am sure a regular mesh with some good cutting and fabrication would do a great job and would be much cheaper and easily replacable. I have not seen (in person) any of the bikes around here having this problem, even when they have been ridden for more then 400+ kms also at highly illigal speeds . Maybe its luck also, and as you were covering such large distances daily it might even seem inevitable.

Do let me know if you still want Radiator Guards for any of your bikes. I started making them myself as I did not find the balance between price and quality in the market.

                    Samples are here for reference.

I have some more. I kept the quality on par or above Evotech/Cox/R&G etc.

Disclaimer: This is not an AD. Just some examples that I made.

                        Hello Bro

Prototyping was done in December. We are working on some other projects so, probably we will have it by early Feb.

                        Thanks
