  • Why did the Monster outsell the HyperMotard

I am a massive HyperMotard(must have guessed from my ID) fan, and I am often intrigued by the poor sales the wonderfully capable bike has managed in the country, especially when its cousin, the Monster, is flying off the shelves.

All the magazines have sung praises for the bike.

And to me, it looks decent too.
And needless to say, its more practical than the monster for out potholed roads, thanks to the good ground clearance.

And it ought to be better in city traffic, thanks to its nimble size.

And yet, it has remained a sales dud!!

So that brings me to my questions.

    @ Monster owners
    Did you consider the HyperMotard?
What were the reasons that made you pick the Monster instead?

    @ others
Will you consider the HyperMotard when going in for a big bike?
    Why/why not

    HyperApproved

One simple reason: Not enough marketing done.

More reasons: The preoccupation of most people with form than function.

Though personally I would tend to agree to a certain extent that the Hypermotard's pillion and luggage carrying capacity doesnt come across as too evident with the first impression.

Though there is no reason why cant we see it eating up miles across the More plains and beyond.

I'm a big fan of the monster obviously for the design but I did not know that this motorcycle was even available in India !! I guess poor marketing plus its priced more than the Monster?
      Regardless, Life shall go on.

After I saw the 'Tom Cruise and and Cameroon Diaz' on Topgear plus after the watching the movie even I always wondered why is that not many people buy the Hypermotard. The reason for the monster selling more is because the Ducati concentrated more on it and its priced more competitively (well, atleast according to Ducati ).

Coming to your question. When I think of a big bike for myself I think of a smaller Multistrada, a even cheaper Monster or a Hypermotard priced like the Monster.

The difference in the prices between the Monster and the Hyper is just 1.51 lakh.

I thought Hypermotard was priced around 10-11 lakhs and the monster starts at 6 lakhs. Now if they have made the price cuts they havnt publicised it just the way they did for the Monster.

From the styling point of view, Supermoto bikes (category to which the Ducati Hypermotard belongs to) do not have the universal appeal that Street Sport (Street Fighter) bikes have.

In terms of the ride experience, sliding around on the flat seat/tank while braking, accelerating, cornering on a bike with a tall seat and suspension is not everyone's cup of tea.

Also the Ducati Hypermotard being big/heavy bike isn't a pure supermoto and can't be thrown around like a lightweight Supermoto like say a Kawasaki KLX250 SF.

              No, I won't.

Supermoto's are basically Dual Purpose bikes (like the Impulse) but with slick and wide road/street tyres (with front and rear of equal diameter).. and the Hypermotard is too big and heavy for a Supermoto.

I'd prefer either a light weight & proper Supermoto or a proper Street Sports/Fighter.. but not a mixture of the two.

Pricing, the Monster 796 was cheaper than the HyperMotard 796 by a huge amount (as much as manybe a Ninja250 back then)

And dont bring the Monster 795 into this. It is just way too stripped down to be a true Ducati.

I personally love the HYM1100 Evo. I think its probably one of the most unique looking bikes on sale in India. Its good enough for 210km/hr(true). If given a choice i would want one over a monster any day. However its time the HYM get revised styling, stightly more power from the same engine mostly in the region of 110bhp (since it just received a power bump of 5bhp to 95bhp). Also as most have said before poor marketing by Ducati has been responsible for the lower sale of HYM(hardly 6 or 7 are in India according to Ducati Mumbai) in India. Also its priced higher(Ducati India has lost it when it comes to pricing their bikes). But most important thing "it lags some important features the Monster Series has viz a removable seat, tool kit, really small fuel tank(12.5L) good enough for 150-170kms". If Ducati India revises its pricing to the lower side(like they did in 2010) and rethinks its strategy for the HYM Series bikes they can have a winner in their hands. It wont obviously eat into the Monsters share but it can create its own fan followings.

I always used to think that the Monster's fanbase is more than HyperMotard's fanbase.

Monster was introduced in early 90s. It single handedly turned the company's fortunes at that time.

Yes nitro thats very true the monster was intoduced in 1993 and was an instant hit among bikers. The HYM was introduced in 2007 and has also been a hit(though not as big as monster). Both are seperated by almost 15 years of time and the monster has received updated styling every 4 years or so. The Hypermotard is essentially now a 6yr old design with little or no styling upgrades. So its a kinds of annoying.

Pundits would argue that it was indeed an Aprilia SXV550 that was originally used for the stunts.
