  • Choosing and Buying a SBK or Supersports under 3 Lacs

    Hi to all fellow XBHPians

First of all, I love this forum cause this forum has got many passionate members who actually know in depth about biking and are technically sound. I will be quick in replying to posts in this thread will sincerely appreciate any inputs, help, advices.

    My previous bike -
Bajaj Pulsar 180 Dtsi in Black colour, analogue meters- engine was black as well, actually I was second one to buy 180 dtsi from Pune Pro biking and did face many issues with it regarding new bike condition . Bike was superb though and so was the service by Wakrewadi based Bajaj owned service Centre.

    Current Requirement
    :

I sold my bike in 2007 mid as I left for England and now I am back and wants to revive my passion of biking.I currently don't have a two-wheeler. I am hoping to ride to office daily which will be round trip of just 6.8 kms and almost no traffic in morning and little bit of traffic in evening, i.e. no bumper to pumper traffic at all. Some times on weekend I will take her for a ride on smooth tar roads which are wide and straight for high speed fun . Add to that about 100km for other local errands(city). So about 350-400 kms a week as some days I will traveling to work via car as well. I do love fast twisties and touring, had ridden on my pulsar 180 dtsi solo as well as with pillion from Pune to Mumbai to and fro in rains. Man, ghats were real fun in rains. So wish to do so in near future again as well So if the SBK or supersports is decent exciting tourer as well it will be icing on Cake .

What I have looked till now
Quite liked CBR 600 F1 and FS, loved the looks and lower weights and so do CBR 954rr.
I have not looked at any of naked street fighters while I do like them but I have no idea whether they are available or not as second hand in India.
I am not at all averse to owning a Yam, Suzuki and Kawasaki if can get well maintained one suiting my needs and requiring minimal maintenance J

Problem is my budget is around 2.25 to 2.5 lacs, if i get really a Steal then i can stretch till 3 lacs.

    My preferences are

    (i) Budget maximum 3lacs

(ii) bike either Supersports i.e. 600cc or Superbike 900cc till 1000cc preference in descending order is Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha,BMW, Suzuki.

(iii) Should be from 2000 onwards and well maintained, preferably one with Fuel Injectors.

(iv) Models which should fall under the budget or stretch it by a bit are Honda Cbr 600F1 or FS i.e any Honda CBR 600r after 2000 and Honda CBR929rr, CBR 954rr or CBR 1000rr.

Please suggest me which bike among I mentioned suits my need also any other bike which will suit my needs.

Naturally its also the case of budget so realistically which one I should aim for
Where to buy bike from and if any fellow XBHPian is interested in selling one or know of anyone who wish to sell his or any reliable dealer, please please let me know soon as I have small window before the opportunity of buying one goes away.
I will be in Mumbai around 7th of June till 10th of June so anyone from Mumbai please contact me as I am hoping to buy one from Mumbai and get an NOC so as I can get it transferred to Lucknow.

Shouldn't this go into Classifieds? Anyways, I checked into some sources, and 3 Lacs seems too less for a 600cc Supersports. Or maybe it could get a year 2000's model.

      1. There is one CBR 600RR 08 model (duty paid) for 5.25. You want to check it?

      2. CBR 600 f4i 2005, DRI cleared, 4.3 lacs. Would this be ok?

Also, please clarify if you're ok with a grey market bike (which doesn't have taxes paid)?

Getting a post 2000 model in your budget would be difficult. In case you do manage to get one do scrutinize the engine and papers thoroughly, you are most likely to come across bikes with shoddy papers and with mechanical & electrical "juggads" which are keeping them running.

In case you are open to older models, i have an 1993 model CBR600 F2, with clean paper in top notch condition and with aftermarket addons. The add mentioned by rachit in the previous post is actually mine.....

Cheers and best of luck with you search...

a sub 3 lac budget is most certainly NOT enough to get you a 600cc inline four.

even if you do find a bike with clean papers for that amount (which you won't)
and even if the bike is in perfect riding condition (which it won't be)

with an upper budget of 3 lac...
realistically... you're looking at a clean, good condition CBR400RR.

it's not going to get better than that!

at 2.5 - 3 lac... a CBR400RR will have you grinning from ear to ear.
              quite literally.
with a topspeed of 220 kmph and more (if the bike's in good condition)

i don't know how experienced you are with big bikes...
but since you have 3 lac to spend i suggest you get yourself a 400RR.

it's prolly the most sane (if you can call it that) "superbike" for indian roads.

powerful. good brakes. sounds just like a "big" SBK too.

Thanks for quickly approving my thread antz.bin and thanks Samarth 619 for quick reply

The bike mentioned are above my budget, hence can not if only cbr 600 f4i was 3l even if i get 2003 model , i just checked adverts of bikes on xbhp, teambhp, bike, biz etc. Is there a database of dealers in MUmbai, Delhi whom i can call or a group of SBK owners whom i can call and ask . CBR 600 F4i 2005 is tempting only if it was in my budget

What is the catch with Grey Market bikes, please clarify .

thanks mate, but will prefer newer models . By the way, the juzzad which you are talking about , is there a way to check the sbks for that or for that matter any other problem with engine, chassis, like a detailed check list?

Thanks Nachaya , actually i test rode Duke thrice and so do CBR 250r. I had finalized Cbr and was about to buy in last Navratri but then let it go as i felt the punch is not enough in a 250cc for my liking and then increased my budget to go for SBK. Regarding paper i will be needing NOC as i will be using bike in Lucknow then may be Delhi after a year or so

Thanks xionite , quite valid point something to ponder over .

The reason i didnot take 400 in consideration is again sourced from Internet so please feel free to correct me, educate me regarding it

I read that 400's are smaller scale versions of supersports 600's made for Japs domestic market and are cramped ( while i am just 5,5 weighing around 59 kgs ) , have aggressive riding stance and thus are more painful for wrists , lack torque in low, mids compared to 600s and naturally more so compared to 1000s kind of like the riding experience which i had in Duke, high revs, but you need to shift often to keep you in powerband and shifting does rob you some precious time while accelerating . Also i considered the fact that by end of 2013 there will be 350's in market hence diminishing allure of imported 400's thats why i am actually preferring 1000ccs more then 600s if i can get one in my budget as i think they will have more mid range and will be easier to sell. Forgot to write before that i wish to upgrade after two years or less even.

though i am curious that 2.5 lacs will get me which year 400rr and in what condition.

Also http://www.bikez.biz/ads/showad.php?ad=44546 please check this advert for a sold bike. if a 2006 bike was advertized for 4.25 and probably sold for 25-50 k less then should i expect to get a 2002 model for under 3l?

Hi i seriously doubt that you would find a good condition SBK in this price and that too with proper papers. If you do , please do get it checked with a proper SBK mechanic before making a purchase as such bike may be either written off post a major accident with hidden repairs on the frame or if you are lucky impounded vehicles given off for auction.

Please do keep in mind that running cost and maintenance cost of an SBK is quite high. You will end up spending more on getting a 2nd hand bike back in in top notch shape than you would on a 1st hand bike. If you have a budget of 3 then why not spend on the baby Ninja 250R.. It will give you all the thrill that you need. Ofcourse I4 is not present but it is a very potent bike... would recommend you to do a TD of the same.

What is the catch with Grey Market bikes, please clarify .
Grey market bikes are illegally imported bikes. Such bikes are either imported in different spare parts and then assembled in India, or their duties not being paid. So, in a way such bikes don't exist on paper. Such bikes are often 1-1.5 Lacs cheaper than Legal bikes, but you run the risk of DRI officials seizing your bike later on.

For the above same reason, there is no database of Second hand Sbk Dealers, because they have to deal with Grey market bikes too, as they're the majority till now.

Although, I have typed an advert for it at the right places. But for you, I suggest Rd 350, Ninja 250R, CBR 400RR, etc. As I PM'ed you, a RD 350 in FZ's chassis is available in Delhi, for 1 Lac. I think you should give it a look.

for 2.5 lac (prolly a little more) you'll get a 400RR that's in virtually perfect condition.

now this is a bike that can 0 to 100 kmph in UNDER 4 seconds...
find out which bike or car (on indian roads) can do that.

and a 400 won't cost you 80 grand every time u have to change tyres.

the SBK market in india doesn't work within the realm of logic.

and please don't trust ANY ads on that website. utter rubbish.

                              in the real world tho...
there are legal/clean/accident free 2002 CBR954RR's selling for as much as 6 to 7 lac.
this is more or less the price band of a good 1000 SBK. (overpriced if you ask me tho)

                              .
