  • Getting my bike back to India one way or another

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew how the import system works for someone living in the US on a green card and wants to get a bike back to India for a short period of time without paying ridiculous amounts of import duties. I mainly plan on using it on the new track in Delhi and maybe some of the ones south. Its a stripped out racing R6 but I still have all the street bodywork/lights/etc just in case I want to go for a street ride or two. Last time I was in India the import duties on these bikes was more than the cost of the bike. I wanted to avoid this even if it means not riding it on the street. I have taken the bike apart several times before to its bare frame and put it back together. Its something you learn to do when you race one of these bad boys unless you have a huge wallet to pay the dealerships to work on your bike here in the US. So if it can ship the parts in different boxes and put it back together in Indian and only drive it on the track, would that be considered illegal?

These are just ideas that are coming in my head, seems like something fun to do if I can afford it in a few years. Here's a picture of me and my baby at one of the track in Oregon, good fun.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I am not sure of this info. But I think if you are planning to use it only as a track tool, then maybe you can get it without paying customs duty. Only you will have to get a bank guarantee and submit it to the customs dept.

The bank guarantee will be released by the customs only when you have proved that you have taken it back out of the country.

But as you know in India any amount of paper work with the government departments is scary!!!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

As long as you have a road legal bike (with lights, license plate, registration card etc), please follow the details in my below post and you should be fine with importing it without paying any customs. You are allowed to keep the bike in India for a maximum period of 6 months only. In extreme cases (not guranteed), if you are able to convince the customs officer with a valid reason, you can get a further extension of another 6 months making a total of 1 year. But after that, you have to ship it out.

I am sure Haroon's post has helped.

On a different note ........ rwanchu, that is some serious lean angle buddy.
Would love to see some more pics of you in action on the track and look at the mods that you may have made. Damn I wish I could do that.

Thats really useful. I didnt know I could get my bike back for a while without paying ANY duties. Thats awesome. I was looking at some shipping options and some of them seemed really expensive. Does anyone know a reliable company to ship with? Fed Ex seems to be charging $5000 on their website given the dimensions and weight of the bike.

It means the engine has been redone, in this case its an Endurance race motor i.e. very soft build. Its basically changing the internals of the engine to make more power. I gained about 10 more bhp which is really noticeable on the track. After endurance we have supersport builds and superbike builds. Different classes of races have different rules. A SBK build can include over boring the cylinder and makes upto 135bhp from an R6...The reliability and mileage you can get from one motor also goes down however. I wanted better reliability and also I didnt want to redo the engine after every race season.

Good; so basically the engine was rebored to fit in slightly larger pistons & inturn the displacement. Is that right?

                  Didn't load it on dynometer?

if u r only planning on riding on the track, there are track day organizers at MMSC and Kari race track, who can rent supersport bikes. Not sure about delhi track, but i am sure they will have good one's too.

That would be a superbike build. With endurance and supersport no boring is allowed, just shaving stock parts of the engine. And I did dyno it at 121bhp. I'm sure I lost a few since then.

I was thinking about only doing track, but I found out 2-3 posts ago that I can get mine back without ANY duties so I think thats what I'm going to do. Something about having your own bike rather than a rental.

Np man :P Here's a race video from one of the races in July. I miss 1 gear before the front straight and 3 bikes pass me I pass em back, then my buddy on the 750 eventually throws me off track by going wide while I was trying to go around him...good fun
