  • Please Help me in my Dilemma - Buying a used Hayabusa

    Hey Guys,
First of all a Mary Christmas and a very happy New Year.

After a lot of contemplation over a very long time - I decided to go ahead and get a Hayabusa. So yesterday I walked in to the show room to hitch the deal and on surveying I found a pre-owned Hayabusa 2010 model (for Sale) standing there.
Gurus please advise if I should go ahead and buy this beautiful darling instead of a new one, as it has cloaked only 208Km on the Odo and is in pristine condition. The owner lives abroad and visits his home once a while. The Bike also has frame sliders and pazzo levers and was bought from the very same showroom.
They are asking for 12.5Laks for the bike, as per the revised price list a new Hayabusa will cost 15+Laks and the 2013 model (arriving in April'13) will be around 17+Laks on road - after all its our hard earned money...what say?!?
Please advise as I have to seal the deal by tomorrow morning - thanx.

Mods - Please put the thread in the right section - if not in place.

Don't have much idea w.r.t SBKs, but I think its a fair deal if:

        1. ODO is really 208 km (i.e, not even 1st service completed)
        2. Negligible (or no) scratches.
        3. Mechanically perfect. (208 kms is practically new only, no damage to engine or chain etc - take an xbhpian who knows SBKs/a very trusted 'polished' mech wid you)
        4. Aftermarket parts are properly fit and the original ones available as well. (Since it has Pazzo levers, it should have original levers as spare, right!)
        5. Original battery, not the ZMA ones!
        6. Proper papers and registration transfer i.e; a legally clean bike.

There may be many more, but then I'm a moped rider after all!

        Finally, welcome to xbhp.

Firstly the 208 kms odo reading does sound a bit fishy, but if true means the bike almost brand new

The same reading should also throw a red flag, a 2 year old bike which had been sitting around, can always have potential for electrical damage if the battery wasn't disconnected. So in addition to the check for the correct battery, also do a quick check for battery and electricals (does it start at first touch, does it show any signs of weakness if you turn on the hazard lights as well, etc)

Do a full visual inspection, look for any signs of external damage and also if allowed open up the battery bay and look a bit at the inside as well. Too much dust and lack of wear and tear on the bolts should tell you if the bike has been opened too many times. In addition, always get it checked by a 3rd party, for a better knowledge of BUSA's you can try pming 'Bigron' another xBHP member who has owned a few and is quite helpful with what to look for in a used Busa purchase.

Final piece of advice from someone who has been marginally burnt by a low odo reading, (the odometer can be turned back even on superbikes ). Dont blindly trust them, get them validated with the condition of the rest of the parts

As sandman_Sd said do check the electricals, battery & the odo reading. Also since the bike is lying unused in the showroom check out the tyres condition as well (superbike tyres are not so cheap.)
& try to negotiate for price.Try to bring it down to 11.50.
              That should be reasonable.

                @ Rahul, I would suggest you to stay away from the 2010 Busa, the reason being;

                1. To my knowledge a 2010 busa that has clocked only 208 kms is very spooky, the reason should be the bike should have seen a serious crash and must have been restored by the Showroom which the owner doesn't want to have it you should enquire about ( I might be completely wrong though, just a probability)
                2. Enquire the Insurance agents to which the bike has insured if any claims or wats-o-ever has been registered and claimed
                3. Get a opinion from your local RTO with the registration no. to make sure the bike & the no. registered and legit and are free from any import hassles
                4. Finally, inspect the bike completely to bare bone electricals and make sure everything is ok. I'm sure you need to change the tyres & batteries as 2yrs is the lifetime of both that would ever last
                5. Nothing comes close to the feeling of a new bike. Although you might save a few lakhs, the piece of mind and the feeling that you get rolling down a new bike from the showroom is priceless....

i would recommend following: ask the dealer if he is ready to give a warranty on the bike, since he claims to have sold it and is claiming the ODO reading.
second: try to get a second opinion, get an SBK mechanic from outside the showroom and ask him to have a look before.
if things are all real and nothing is actually wrong you really have a gr8 deal there.

i agree with the above "buyer beware" any thing too good to be true is too good to be true..........check the original insurance policy for claims....service records....also only few dealers are authorized to sell her so be sure the one u r buying is the auth bloke...any chance of extended warranty...a 2012 new bike is going now for 14.7 odd...so like Rakshit indicates 11.5 is a nice price...have fun....I've enjoyed every moment i ride my busa....all the best

                      Hey Guys,
Thanks a ton for your response. Actually on pondering over the suggestion given by you all, I agree that something really looks fishy here .
So with a heavy heart I decided to turn down the offer - for the moment. The quoted price was 13.5L and I had manage to get it down to 12.5L; with the price increase I am again contemplating which SBK to go in for. Waiting for the 2013 models of Honda - arriving around 15th Jan.
Cheers 'n' Thanx for all your support.
                      Ride Safe.

                      Mods please close the thread.

Frankly , a 2 year old bike clocking just 200 kms is not un heard off and I do know of people who ride their bikes very rarely maybe couple of weeks a year. A friend has a 2008 hayabusa that has clocked 1200 kms. Anyways , you will need to do some thorough inspection before you buy the bike. More than anything else , inspection of the electricals. The bike should crank properly , hold its rpm , all switches and lights working , proper charging , no dimming or sudden surge in headlight on acc / de acc . Inspect the tyres , they will have flat spots. You ll have to change them. The brake pads. If not used , the compound would have hardened so although they may not require immediate change its a near future expense.
You ll have to look at the gas tank to see if there is no corrosion and also if old fuel was lying inside. Inspection of the drive chain to see the links and any sprocket wear and tear. The filter and the oil. If the oil has not been changed it would have broken down with the additives separating from the liquid compound. The brakes and the clutch DOT 4 fluid would need a change and bleeding.
The injectors would need a cleaning and maybe throttle body sync. There are alot other things which would need inspection. Truth be told , these bikes are indestructible as long as mechanicals are concerned and you have to be a really big idiot to screw up the engine till regular service has been done. NOw , if the bike has been crashed and refurbished by the dealer its a different story. Then you have to be extra careful. I suggest you take someone knowledgeable along to thoroughly inspect the bike and satisfy yourself. If you like getting your hands dirty then negotiate hard on the price and re build it. It will be a fun project. However , if you would like a complete peace of mind then the price difference is to small and uncertainly to high. , a new bike makes more sense

13.5L for a 2010 bike is a BIG NO.So I'll suggest you to raise your budget a bit & go for a new one.
