    LOL....

    a 100mph first gear!!

"the R1's first gear is ridiculously tall. I was flabbergasted when the CBR1000's speedometer read 90 mph in first gear; the R1 takes that and goes 7 mph higher! It's as tall as the second cog in many other bikes, and I continually found myself stomping on a non-responsive gear lever when coming to a stop, believing I still had another gear to go down. "

Ricci told me that these bikes have such a tall first gear to avoid / reduce unintentional wheelies....

with such a tall 1st gear, one could go riding all the day round in the city without bothering to switch gear

Not just that , but with so much torque thse bikes easily spin their tyres . Using taller gearing reduces the spinning ( still a lot of spins ) . That makes it easier to launch from standstill.

And one can always say : " But officer , I was only in 1st gear ! Honest !"
Man will occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of the time he will pick himself up and continue on.
