As they have mentioned no shipping charges, I don't think there would be any import duty here, . . That's my view, may be some others have something else to say. . .

Ya that's what ebay says... But in the seller's product description I found the below comment.

So hoping someone could throw some light on this... I just don't want have to go running to the custom's office just to collect a couple of air filters...

Customs duty is your RESPONSIBILITY. If the value is less than US$ 200, normally it may be exempt from customs if you can give a declaration (a simple letter) to the customs department in the post-office, that its been gifted to you by a relative and value is US$ ..... Otherwise the customs duty should be 30 or 40% of the invoice value and you have to pay it.

Normally the procedure is that when the package arrives at the main post office in your city. They will send you a separate intimation my post saying your package has arrived and you have to present the original invoice or the relevant documents to clear the shipment. Once you go to that specific post-office and pay the amount or give the declaration letter (if value less than US$ 200), they will then arrange to have it delivered to your address by a postman (since there are some internal procedures after you pay the customs).

No duty if the item is less than 100 rupees in value but our postal department guys are quite lazy and let anything less than 10 USD slip through.

Once an item is scanned and identified as a potential dutiable item it's sent to the postal appraisal department of sub foreign post office
The clerk there will open up the box and see if there is a sticker price or invoice in the package if there is an indicative value or say they are able to verify that the value of the item they will directly ship the item to the local post office when you post man delivers you need to pay him the duty. In cash receipt is given for the customs duty if local post office is visited.

In case there is no invoice then they intimate you, all you have to do is take the intimation letter, invoice of the product and bank or credit card statement and go to them. Highlight the price on the invoice and the bank statement and mention the call notice number on these back up documents.

Many times you will need to submit this to the PAD super himself be confident and tell. Him it's for personal use.

NEVER EVER TRY TO BRIBE , under value your goods, when DRI audits if your item gets picked up they will trace back and slap hefty fined for under valuation and duty evasion.....seen seem be penny wise and ended up paying 10k in fine with interest @ 18% for 6 months for avoiding a duty of 1k....

In Bangalore postal appraisal department / postal customs office is in museum road. Easy way there is take the left turn just before the anil Kumble circle when coming from brigade road junction and head straight till you hit at intersection Building on left side 3rd floor. Visiting time is 3 to 5 pm.

After Googling a bit, here is what I have:

I found a Local retailer in Delhi:
450 x 3items + shipping (maybe 150/- ) ~= Rs. 1500/-


Importing from Hong Kong:
810 (4items) + 325 (assuming 40% duty) ~= Rs. 1150/- + additional charges (?) + Time/Cost spent on govt red-tape (?)



So... it seems I might as well go for the local retailer for now.

BTW, has anyone come across a similar looking chrome air filter?

I live in Mumbai, and I get my parts from Grant Road (East) and from auto-spares shops near Malad Station (West). They don't generally keep a good variety of custom parts.

Go ahead and buy it bro, duty wont exceed 300 rupees, ask the seller to mention USD 5 to 10 on the customs declaration paper. I have ordered this HK and China stuff of over 500 to 1000 USD in aggregate and total duty paid i have paid is 1500 rupees. Make sure the parcel is sent with a tracking number else 99% the parcel wont reach your home and goes to the customs officer house for his her kids.
I have never been charged for windscreen, huggers, levers, fuel filter, fuel pump, fork seals brake pads , gloves and body armor.
I have been charged for everything which has LED or Bulbs or full metal engine part.

For example, i ordered a 50 USD Cam chain tensioner for my cbr 600 and duty i paid was Rupees 116 . Other one is i ordered 30 USD led turn signal mirrors i paid 330 duty. front and rear indicators with normal bulbs for 15 USD i paid Rupees 618 duty.
In short go ahead and order it and ask the sender to lower the price to 5 USD and ship it with tracking number.

I did a google reverse image search and found another desi retailer selling it for 298/- bucks on ebay.in ... I guess I should have looked there first.
Will update this thread if I go via the import route
