• Planning on a Harley Iron 883 - Need inputs

Hello fellow xBhpians,

My name is Shakthi, from Chennai. I have been an ardent reader of this site for long...but not posted much !!
I started riding motorbikes about 18 years back. My first bike was a Suzuki Samurai....still own it.
Bought a Pulsar DTSFi 220 about 7 years back and is my current ride.

I love riding two wheelers right from my school days...have grown watching/following/oogling sportsbikes.
Like every one of us, buying a high-capacity bike has been a dream.

Have been saving up for the Ninja 650 for a long time now ! (Okay, Okay, I hear you going 'Why does the title say Harley' ?? )
Well, I dont know !

I have been watching a lot of youtube videos, doing trips to KTM and Harley showrooms, taking up-close and personal look of both the bikes, test rides, etc.....the exhaust note of the Harley going 'potato-potato' makes me hungry ! Moreover, Harley customization options are endless. The choice of making the bike truly yours is amazing. Now I want this bike so bad that it hurts

Test rode the Iron recently....Rode it around the block, with the showroom guy leading me on a Forty Eight. It was a good ride, but I could hardly get on gear 2 !
Bike felt smoother than expected, and pulled like a horse. I was imagining my hips would be jiggling from the vibrations....but no !

Anyways, I started saving up more and currently hope I own a Harley Iron sometime soon.

Here is what I want to know from fellow owners and XBhpians......
• With every penny being hard-earned money....Is the Harley Iron reliable ? How is the machine after 2-3 years ? Can a Harley be a good long term ride in our country ?
• How is the Harley service centre in Chennai ? Is it easy to get parts ?
• I like the flat-black paint scheme. Is it easy to clean and maintain ? If its difficult to maintain, my second option is the new hard-candy silver. Looks cools too !

Let me know guys.....Hoping to hear from all of you !

Let me get you up and running!
You are looking for 2-3 years of ownership? You could find yourself stuck with a Harley even 20-30 years forth, same one you bought 20 years ago.
Service is not a problem, no matter how the service centre is, afterall they only change oil and filters etc. Any dope can do that!
Matt black powercoat of Iron or chrome on bling bikes will easily last 10+ years unless you put it down.

Having being very repulsive to HD before I actually owned one , what can i tell you is , There is No biking experience like a Harley Davidson!

Never owned one nor will do . But a friend of mine owns a Iron 883, his biggest problem was he had to spend almost 30k for fitting a pillion seat. I guess Iron 883 doesn't have a oil cooled engine (correct me here if I am wrong), but be wary of the heat generated in our Chennai B2B traffic sans the cooling instrument.

Good luck !!!!

@dustom_99: Thanks for the reply. I have been following your threads. Great work ! Saw your mods for ground clearance, and was like wow !
Then I saw your engine conversion thread.....You are something else sir :-) Really amazing...

@TheArcher84:
Yes, the accessories are a worry. Most of the Screaming Eagle accessories are priced atleast 200+ USD. Aftermarket parts seem expensive too...

Whatever bike you had earlier the experience from them would almost not count, this is an altogether different thing in my opinion.

It weights a TON but sheds the weight as the speed increases so you feel better as you move and boy do you feel like you could just keep riding..!!!
It has 883cc on tap but rarely ever misbehaves but even a moment of lapse in concentration and you'll find yourself in trouble, this one is like a girlfriend..!!
It's built like our Ambassador cars but still needs attention like a little infant..!!
It's like being in love all over again..!!!

This thing would demand proper attention from you; get this baby only if you can handle her 'nakhre'..

But back to business; your questions:-

1. It is a bullet-proof bike as told to me by fellow riders even on international forums. Even I was concerned with the reliability cause we have to spend more here for
any problems faced with the machines.
On the HOG rides I have seen people with bikes that are a decade old and still would fetch a brilliant return on resale. So the machines are very reliable but in the end if
you end up getting a lemon it's your luck.

2. My experience with Capital Harley in New Delhi has been mostly satisfactory but I dunno about the Chennai Dealership.
You might have to wait for parts as they are shipped from US when not in stock.

3. The paint quality is superior to any other motorcycle brand but still you need to take care of the bike as any scratches would be more noticeable as everything else is so brilliantly laid out. The build quality is supreme. Any color you choose you'd be happy in the long run.
But I'd say that BLACK is what goes with a machine named IRON.

Cheers bro.

Hi Pistolharry....
Firstly, congrats on completing CA and congrats on your new bike. Have been reading your thread on the ownership. Nicely narrated...

Thanks a lot for your comments and inputs.....very helpful.

Yes, I was reminded about the weight too during the test ride. Just before throwing the bike into gear, I stood up to tuck something into my jeans.
Then I realized I had a heavy bike between my legs.....The bike was starting to lean.... Grabbed the handles and sat down immediately !

About the paint...yes, i agree too...flat black looks simply amazing ! Subtle, yet strong statement.
I dream of fitting drag bars with forward controls some day (when I get by bike that is !!)

I will keep you guys posted on my journey :-)
Ride safe....

Is it true that the 2015 Iron comes with factory installed security system ? Does anyone know the new features with 2015 model.
Have been searching the web, but not getting accurate information !
