Yes I will be taking the test drives multiple times if possible to test myself.

I have a lot of doubts regarding the seat height of these bikes. I can't say anything as of now, because that will be considered as a premature opinion without taking TD .

Benelli 600i looks fairly good and has awesome sound - best among any bikes under Rs 10 Lakhs without buying anything extra. Engine is sweet, ride is fairly comfortable...

But its brakes are not too quick and it doesn't have ABS. Wait for ABS version of 600i if you can and then decide.

Otherwise Z800 is good choice. I am riding street triple and would have recommended it to you as it is also in your budget (9.02 L on road Pune when I bought in Sep-2015).
It is a very good bike but my hesitation is related to stalling issues that I am hearing from many riders. I am yet to face that.

Only thing is - Z800 is a very heavy bike in its class and you can almost forget taking anyone as a pillion rider - nobody will be able to survive beyond 20-30 min ride on that rear seat! But it has really amazing acceleration and it looks imposing as well...

One more thing:

Forget the Yamaha R1 2010...There are many disadvantages (despite it being a very good bike)

1) Impractical in daily usage - too much heat, uncomfortable sitting position, can't really do more than 1 hour on these - though there are brave hearts who tour whole India on such bikes also - but you really need to have iron butt + rubber back to achieve that!
2) More expensive to maintain
3) Scary amounts of power that can surely cause much damage if you get overconfident anytime - brakes are super sharp...Too hot to handle if you are coming from 200-350 cc category to suddenly 1000cc super sport...

Naked street bikes like Z800/Street Triple are quite practical..Easy to ride, not scary as long as you are controlling your emotions fairly ok..Yet, these can be quite fast - anything you can do on any Indian road or even any race track in India...These bikes will give you more than enough thrills...Yet they don't hurt your back due to say a couple of hours of riding...

They are also expensive to own - but surely less than 1000cc class...Being naked bikes, in unfortunate event of accident, there is no faring to damage and hence relatively lower expenses...

Till 120-130 kmph, street nakeds are very easy riders...Once the revs rise to higher ranges, they turn into angry beasts and move forward at very high speeds - hitting 180 is nothing for these bikes and crossing 200 kmph requires only short empty stretches...That is quite a lot...Remember that except autobahns Germany and few in Austria may be, these are all illegal speeds..Even in US anything beyond 130 kmph (about 75-80 MPH) will earn you speeding tickets from police..

But in India you can actually have this fun in few places without getting caught...That comes with its own risks of course as you know how Indian road conditions are - so take it easy and gradually increase your level...Don't go overboard man....

My 2 bits. Why isn't anyone recommending the MT09. They have fixed the snatchy throttle.. And in my opinion this will be a beautiful bike to own.
It's a 3 cylinder motorcycle and has its benefits. Will be balanced for city and the highways.

If I had the option of getting another bike. The Yamaha would rate higher than the Z800 for sure!

Too exorbitantly priced, a good 2 to 2.5 lacs over the competition. Not worth the premium.

I don't think so. It has more to offer on the electronics front than the Kawasaki. Plus with all its reviews. Journalists feel it's a better and more fun bike to have.

A good point. If I were to upgrade/replace my 650 today MT09 will be my first choice. I don't have a fetish for fairings, and MT09 is just the right kind of bike. I think when we talk about big bikes and exotic cars, we should not be talking about VFM. Yes, affordability is a different thing and it is subjective, but the price at which MT09 is placed, I feel its just right.

I agree...MT09 is overpriced and Yamaha has certainly missed a chance to upstage Kawasaki and Triumph in India. They should have kept only a small premium over the rivals - and due to Yamaha's long standing name in India for performance bikes, they would have got advantage...But nearly 12 L on road is way too much..There are other options once you go to that price range..

I know it's more expensive than the z800 and the triple. But has more to offer. Ride by wire, skipper clutch, rider modes. The bike is a hoot to ride. Wish it was a CKD, Yamaha would have been able to bring the costs down. I don't know what else is available in that price range. The z1000 is more expensive, the Ducati Monster 821 is a different kind of a bike (I hate the sound), the new Hypermotard will be somewhere around 12.50 or so.

With all that's available the Yamaha should sit well in between. Plus it's a Yamaha, reliability is top notch! And yes the new MT10 is on its way too. Very excited to see Yamaha bring these options.

No way it justifies 3-3.5 lack premium over Z800 (or ST) considering the fact that all 3 cost almost same elsewhere. Logically all 3 bikes belongs to same segment(Middleweight naked) and offers their own pros and cons. There are many reviews which favors Z800 over Mt09 or ST over MT09. There is no clear winner among them. Yamaha should have priced it close to Z800 or ST for competitive reason.

Unfortunately Yamaha knows there are few hardcore fans in India who will buy their bikes no matter what the price tag is (without considering what competition offers) , R3 is classic example.

I went to benelli past weekend and I must say they look and sound beautiful in flesh rather than seeing in videos. I thought it's weight may cause some problems, but because of seat height (800 mm) I didn't faced any issues. One of the positives of this bike is it's exhaust note with IXIL setup and will surely put a wild grin. It screams like a proper liter class bike with aftermarket exhaust.


Al tough for most people the low/mid end torque is not sufficient, I feel it's more than enough to overtake any vehicle in the city. The only down side is it's clutch and Lack of ABS. I think one should wait for ABS version because of the road sense which other people don't have in India. Now waiting to go to Kawasaki showroom to check Z800.



I will keep the above points in the mind. I have to agree that most litre class bikes are not for daily practical usage in india. This is because of the infrastructure, traffic, other people on the road, the attention they grab etc... Even the naked super bikes that we ride are not safe in indian conditions, but still we ride them because we love to ride them and some ride to show off.

Well i still would pick up the MT. It's lighter, more tractable and i honestly feel its a better package. Yamaha has a reputation not only in India but the entire world. They make solid engines and components. There is no doubt about the same. Apparently they score better than their Japanese counterparts.
When you own a superbike, you know how it feels to have more. In the current scenario Yamaha has more to offer than the Kawasaki Z800.

Correct me if i am wrong , but whats wrong with the ducati 821 ?? It offers all that a yamaha offers and even more for ex :- 3 level of traction control , 8 level abs to choose from , and at a considerable low price at about 1.5 lakhs cheaper than MT 09 , commenting on the reliability part ive had words with few recent owners and ive had no negative feedback about its realiability as well . Well the exhaust note is subjective and i personally like it . I am getting one by this May , if theres any other thing i need to consider please do point it out as it will be very helpful to me . I stay in mumbai and the usage is only weekend .

The Yamaha I felt was a better investment in years to come, just from a reliability POV and how it holds its value. Plus it seems to be a super fun ride.

Ducati have a dodgy reputation internationally when it comes to electronics. But hey, if you have made up your mind, just go for it. The new monster looks good. The exhaust note yes, its a personal preference but again once post 5k rpm the intake sounds good.
