• R1 2014 or 2015 Ninja ZX10R ABS 30th ANNIVERSARY Edition?

Fellow riders,
I have been off late a dormant soul being ripped from riding since a year now, that posits as the longest gap in my 18 years of riding. It was never intended for but destined to happen. My story is well thronged zillion times and often topped with emotions of anger, frustration, sadness to xbhp fellowmate rajpal here in Melbourne.
The intent of the post here is different so before I deviate more, I will get to the point:

I am now in verge of getting a brand new 2014 R1 or 2015 ZX10R ABS 30th Anniversary, my heart always vouched for an R1 and Yamaha engineering in totality, the under-tail exhaust had always been the visual catch for me in the R1, my choice limits to the model production 2014 as I have no liking to R1 from 2015 model till date (may sound prudently rude but just my individual view). There is only 1 brand new R1 2014 left in Melbourne showroom, whom I have been stalking silently since a year.

Next is the 2015 ZX10R ABS 30th Anniversary Edition, an electronic package with tads of features. I chose 2015 model as it comes with the SE 30th anniversary, though just a visual flavor.

I will not put the derivatives to instate what made me pick these two, I only look forward to your opinion given a choice among these two only, with your own reasons which may someway drive/catalyse my choice.

Regards,

Hi Abhi,

II was in the same dilemma before I shifted my loyalty towards a roadster. However, I would vote for ZX10R because

1: More useful power in city.
2: All bells and Whistles
3: Most importantly ABS. R1, 2014 does not come with ABS.
4: Less insurance costs. At least here in Germany, insurance is bit cheaper for a motorcycle with ABS
5: Bit easy on wrist. R1 is tad heavy on wrist. Super aggressive position when compared to Zx10R.
6: R1 had no adjustable dampers. (may be I am wrong?)
7: 2014 R1 is outdated. less re-sale value. The new R1 (2015) is bit expensive and has got all bells and whistles.
8: R1 toasts your legs. zx10R is bit easy. (hey, it just my opinion, when I did my test rides)

I can imagine, the outing model R1 would be easier on pocket, but the question is "how long do you want to keep it with you?", "high depreciation",....

Most importantly, take a test drive (30min in the city and on motorways).

I hope this helps.

P.S: its just my opinion!!!

Cheers,
Sree

Incredible machines to pick from, but my vote goes to the ZX too. It is easier to ride in city traffic(here in India) compared to the R1. Having said that it is a beast on track and with equally competent riders will be faster than the R1 on most tracks.

And as already stated, the 2014 R1 is dated. Beautiful machine yes, but definitely dated.

abhirajcb ONLY a true biker understands the feelings when one is away from a bike for so long. I felt your pain every time I met you so now, when finally the wheels are in motion - I'm almost as excited as you are.

The past is past and as winter approaches - Riding continues on for people like us! So I look forward to you getting one ASAP. You will need to buy some thermals as well and then I can finally say - The roads beckon!

All right then, getting back to your question. Some fellow members have replied with some though provoking answers. Both are equally good machines and very very capable but one of the replies got my attention: The 2014 R1 is Outdated. I normally think from the heart so this got me thinking. It is 2 years old now and probably the reason, they have not sold it yet. Have a think about this.

From another friend here - I got similar answers. R1 is an awesome machine and good for track days however on the road, the ZX10R has an edge. However it's no pussy on the track as well and can give the R1 a run for it's money.

So at the end of the day - it's a personal choice and as always a battle between the heart and the mind!

I would weigh both the options keeping heart/mind, technology, looks (Colour, exhaust), preference, re-sale value (not very important to me personally but worth a thought) before making a decision. Obviously MONEY is very important so the best option is to get the R1 at a much lower price OR the ZX10R as advertised (which is a bargain as well).

If the Yamaha guy doesn't drop at least $1500 on it - just walk away and get the ZX10R.

Let's do this - there are a lot of roads to cover!

Best of Luck!

I've ridden both (in Australia). They are substantially different bikes. Have a test ride of both. I think a good test ride on each will make the choice clearer for you.
The R1 looks great, sounds great, goes great, stops OK, doesn't handle so great. Feels heavier.
The ZX10 looks OK, sounds like an I4, goes great, stops great, handles great.

All that power and electronics advantage, that the ZX has over the R1, are wasted on the average rider (if you are not an average rider and race in Australian Superbikes or something then ignore my comment). Most people cant use 100HP on a motorcycle, let alone 200.

Cant go wrong with either. Buy the one that makes your heart pound, not the one that makes your brain tick.

I thank each one of you to lay down your viewpoints, as I mentioned it definitely has stirred my choice, quoting below the key liners which tickled the fickle mind to take a stand somewhat

Having graduated from 250, 650 cc twins, also owned and ridden a GSXR 1000 L1 for a year in past, I am well versed with the power these 1k mean machines bring in.
R1 is a brutal killer, I have learned this from detailed ownership/review experiences of people across globally, it truly yearns respect. And I often felt persuaded to own such known beast and understand what it takes to tame such power.
ZX10R is a stealth killer, it may give a no feel if within defined RPM limits, but unleash throttle and the electronic package will adjust the output response that will scare the shit of even experienced riders.

Yes I look forward to do track too, I have love for speed, agility and handling, though I did not do track while in India but found a kind of unmanned nice road stretch with few turns, I used to run lap timer in GSXR built-in hood, every meter of stretch was glue stuck in my mind. Probably I burned 80% of my odometer miles on GSXR in that stretch.

With time of riding, maturity too seeps in, as such I may pick a ZX10R, as a win of mind and heart balance together, while R1 solely a heart play given the choice of love limited to R1 2014 and prior models only.
I will though rent an R1 sometime to pacify my heart.

Unfortunate the ZX10R is available for delivery immediate today itself, but my gaelic stingin garlic breathin motha ****** luck is on a journey elsewhere, again rajpal knows it. I have to console and suffice my heart to prolong delivery by another tentative 45-50 days (hopefully!). But I may block and book in advance.

I have owned 9 different bikes and for either one I never took a test ride prior, not a definitive rule though.
Cannot go wrong with either of the Jap, since riding comfort, ease on hand twist etc. are not my criteria, while other info is available online, both are good for a 6'2 guy.

I still look forward for more views from xbhp fellow mates, something can still stir the final take, who knows!

I assumed rebate because you are picking up an outgoing model year bike, and I assume you are doing so because you are getting a good discount.

Well assumption is just an assumption.. While indeed I am picking the outgoing model not because I am getting good discount but I wanted the Special Edition Green combo color scheme and tag of 30th Anniversary.

I would have got at same price a 2016 Honda CBR1000RR fireblade tri-color HRC/Matt Black (not the SP version) while with only Rs.25k extra a 2016 GSXR 1000. I was rather starting to vouch on the Matt Black 2016 Fireblade also.

I hope your assumptions do not run any further.
