    Importing used bike to India

    Hey rubber wings birds,

    I am thinking of importing a used bike from Japan, but I am not sure what custom formalities have to be done and duties need to be paid ones the package arrives in India.

    Can someone help me on this ?

      It is possible but it will cost you 2 or 3 times more than the original price of bike and Government will charge around 150% import duty on that tax. I don't think it is reasonable unless you have the money lying around and you want the bike at any cost. Refer to the example below.

      Item cost : 200000
      Shipment cost : 0
      Insurance cost : 0


      CIF value (item cost + shipment cost + insurance cost) : 200000


      Customs duty rate : 100%
      CUSTOMS DUTY (customs duty rate * (CIF)) : 200000
      Vat rate : 18%
      VAT (vat rate * (Customs duty+CIF+other taxes if applicable)) : 72000


      Total amount to be paid : 694560(excluding extra taxes if applicable)

          Don't think about importing a bike, just buy something which is sold in India. It is not worth the hassle, other than that you need to spend a load of money which you could by buying a new motorcycles in our country.
