  • Need info on RD350/RE maintainance

I've thinking over and over and over, but now there is no other way. I got to get my behind on either a RD350 or a Bull. But I have been wary of the problems that come with either of the two. So it would be better to know them beforehand, coz they won't be stopping them from getting the bike.

I know both the bikes belong to a different class, but each seems a getaway from my current CBZ.

    RD350
The spares, unskilled mechanics, sleeved cylinders, blah blah and more blah. Anything else I should know? I am pretty under-privileged when it comes to all, since my city lacks the expertise.

    Bull (old one, from '90s/2k's)
350 Std - What is the regular maintainance the bike requires? I read about Contact Breakers every where, but can someone tell me the specifics? What required, and how often? Come cheap though.

Electra 4S - No probs bike, hopefully, due to removal of CB. But the high price in second hand market deter me, plus lacks the classic look.

Electra 5S - 5th gear and left side gear shift looks tempting, but can't decide to go against the classic Bullet style.

    Thunderbird/ Machismo - Don't want to give a shot.

Finally, what should I look for in any old thumper or RD350? I don't want to get cheated, though I don't mind spending an amount to bring the bike in top-notch condition.

If desideep's hearing, help me out buddy.

i am sure you would have understood from above that CB points are not a problem actually they are a boon. yes this one does lack a classic look.

Electra 5S - 5th gear and left side gear shift looks tempting, but can't decide to go against the classic Bullet style.

To be true IMO the 5 speed bullet lacks the character of a bullet just cause it has the gear shift on the left side. Though there are kits in the market to change that. but again i have not realized any difference in performance when it comes to the 5th gear.

      Thunderbird/ Machismo - Don't want to give a shot.

      HEHEHE

Thanks man for looking out for me here but the experts are still away believe me you will get even a better opinion i will ask Prakahr to post up.

and if the bullet is post 1972 then it does not sell according to the model it sells according to the condition. and that depends who you buying it from. like a 1980 Bullet could cost more than some thing from 2002 just cause it is well maintained. and any thing before 1972 was the one that was made in england or the one that was made in england but assembled in india. they had different parts and stuff and also they are now considered as vintages and thats why they are very expensive at times. but again that depends who you buy it from

well dude let me say with any of these bikes you are goin to enter another league of motoring nirvana in India atleast.

personally i have an RD which has given me fantastic service for the past 5 years. i have added a front disc[ pulsar unit] which has improved braking distances a fair bit. otherwise watch out for the engine and other mechanical bits before u get urself an Rd, exact details hope the experts can help.

My Machismo is the AVL type and truth be told i am not all that happy with itm it just some how lacks 'something'. I am searchin for a '69 or pre69' mpdel those are my favorite, somethin bout the smith clocks, the front drums etc etc is just so appealing.

but i guess an Electra will be good start, whatever u decide to get, good luck with it and enjoy the new experience

Maintaining an RD will be way difficult for you. Getting spares are getting harder day by day. You need the right contacts to get you even a small oil seal thesedays. The bull will be the best bet for you. It will give you peace of mind for sure.

Thanks desideep...I had a talk with a good mechanic today, who told me that an old Bull will be a commitment, just like you said. But how much I need to pay attention to the ride, apart from my job, is a BIG question here. I was even considering going for a new one, as I got a big shock on knowing the CBZ's engine jobs costs...I might not be very generous when the bike is looking for more and more in maintainance. Having a vintange is beyond doubt an accomplishment, but it would be like keeping an elephant as a pet.

Still not able to mae up my mind to go into the second-hand market or just empty out my pockets for a new one...RD is outta qusetion, as you'll see from my reply to other posts.

            Appreciate your help...

@weird san and arun: Boss, I was ecstatic yesterday when a mech told me about an old RD lying around was available for 7-8k and needed work done. A moment later, a friend told me that 3-4 other RDs that running in the town are using spares taken from the bike for sale, it hit my stomach like a hammer. Well, cheap bargain not always gives you good stuff. Sourcing parts on a regular basis from angalore will be a headache. So if no good condition RD is there, thumper will be the answer.

Ha ha.. i always do the same with an old unused RD lying with my mech whenever im stuck with spares.. thinking of swapping its HT barrels with my LT too.. its in its 2nd or 3rd oversize only.. still unsleeved. even my RD has unsleeved barrels, but on its 4th O.S.

Getting spares from bangalore is also becoming hard day by day. I do pay numerous visits to JC Road shops searching for spares.. since the last 6 months or so, their answer is almost the same with most of the spares " RD ones are not available saar, we have RX ones in plenty"

^^its the same case here also. how many times my bike has had parts of other bikes that were not rideable, thats the RD's main problem spares.

as said b4 bull will be relatively more hassle-free to use and maintain

Hey bro i am happy that i was able to help. actually see with bullets its quite weird. because each bullet is diffrent like we have two of them and one of them has always been a pain other wise has been just amazing normal servicing and thats all. see when it comes on the maintainance it costs almost 8K to get the engine rebuild.

with the vintage bullet it is no elephant thing. cause all the parts are awaiable... any ways go for a bullet dont think much.. just go with the flow and then if you dont like it cause of x number of reasons you can always sell it off. i know its never hard to sell off a bullet

                      CB Kit

"any ways contact breakers are something really nice to have, i would say spend 1200 rs you get the CONTACT BREAKER REPALCEMENT KIT. "

                      Hi Desideep,

Could you pls detail a bit more about the contact breaker replacement kit? Hope it is some electonic device to be put in points housing. How it works the CB job & Is it known by other names (of manufacturer or so) for easy identification?

                      bye.,

hey bro. the kit is know by the same name that i have mentioned. its is nothing but a replacement for the points you take out the points and stick this plate there and thats it and then there is a small electronic device.

its easy to source. it is avaiable as a OEM accesories at the RE showrooms

Yupp, I guess the 350 Std will be another story of maintenance if the kit is used. Hopefully, I can get a bike in decent condition. And if I do, xBhp will be the first to know. Thanks again deep.
