  • Assembling my own enfield

So finally after a long long while i am posting on this thread. i am very sorry for this delay. All this while i had been looking for an engine, and i was lucky enough to find a bike that suited my requirements. And it was the ROYAL ENFIELD STANDARD 1982! And luckily it was bang in my budget! The papers were all clean and i was the 4th owner of the bike.

Now comes the condition of the bike. I wont say that i got the bike in mint condition, but it wasn't that bad either! And being an automobile engineering student, things became easier for me. I'd like to come towards the problems now.

    1. the speedometer was not working as the gear that drives the wire was broken- solved
    2. the front shocks were leaking- under process
    3. the front hub had rusted and the front brake was not working- fixed
    4. clutch cable was a bit tight and damaged- replaced
    5. the silencer was rusted- replaced
    6. the gearbox had leakages- gasket replaced
    7. the carburetor was giving problems- jet replaced and serviced
    8. rear brake shoes worn out- replaced
    9. horn wasn't working- replaced
    10. headlight cluster was in a stingy condition- replaced
    11. engine oil changed to 20w50

now the bike is in a very good condition. its a pleasure to ride it. as of now there are no major problems as such. all the parts that were changed were original and sourced from an authorized dealer.

Lets come to the modifications now. being a youngster/collage going chap, i wanted to my bike look classic yet with a modern touch. so i started with the headlights. it was just yesterday that i installed a projector setup in the headlight. and all the work that was performed on the bike was done by me with the help from a service manual and a trouble shoot guide that i found on the internet.i would be posting the pics of the work in the evening once i have some good clicks. till then lets sit back and discuss about the bike!

    thanks to all

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Congrats on the work, though personally in my opinion I feel the headlight looks out of place.

          good job...

somehow, the blure angel eyes don't look good on bullet, personal opinion though, i would have preffered, red demon eyes.

Thanks to all for the replies.
The headlight actually looks good as compared to the photo.
I do agree that the demon eye would look good on the bullet and even i wanted to install one. But the problem with it is that there would be one more inverter added to to already two existing two for the headlight abd the angel eye. And the headlight cluster doesnt have that much space.
Currently i am working with one more project for the bike
I would be extending the rear swing arm by about 5 inches which would reduce the height of the bike be about 2.5 inches.
Currently i am sourcing the right grade of steel for the same
I'll soon post the full details of the project.

Bad news! There was a bit leakage from the lower side on the right ( gear lever side). i opened and aligned the gasket and asked one of my friends to tighten the bolt. i had just gone inside the workshop to get the tools and when i come back, what i see is that this guy is sitting with the bolt head in his hand and the broken piece inside the thread. now what the problem is that the assembly is of the oil pump, and the moment i crank the engine, a pool of oil would form. So now i am planning to remove the engine from the frame and would be taking it to pudpet (all in chennai would be familiar of this place).

The following things would be undertaken

                1. general engine service
                2. decarbonisation of the engine
                3. clutch replacement
                4. gear box service
                5. replacing all gaskets
                6. changing piston rings (if required)

                  Latest Update on my project
I have given the engine to Mr. Jaffar at Pudupet. The head been removed to get it decarbonized. There was a bit noise in the rocker set during running, so the rocker set has been replaced. The piston was fine (20 number) so i just got the rings changed. Rest all gaskets would be replaced and i would be getting back the engine on Monday hopefully!

As of now, parts worth 1700 have been given to the mechanic. Another 2000-2500 bucks would be spent as labour/ misc work.

I'll keep the thread updated on this!
