  • My Jawa 1970 Restoration

Picked up my Jawa in September and got it restored. See the before & after pics

Had replaced the Jikov Carb with a Brand new Pacco- P43 on the very first day. Impressed with its performance.

Most of the parts were sourced from Trichur itself. And others from Delhi via Salil Trehan [Spareswala, FB Group]. A big thanks to him.

    Works done..

    1. fixed the seat- 500rs
    2. repainted the bike [without engine removal]- 4k
    3. fixed the auto clutch etc, changed oil, new gaskets put in- 800rs
    4. speedometer ring & glass changed- 30rs
    5. new cables, levers, mirrors, RK Front brake Assy etc- 1k
    6. new Accl assy from Salil - 950rs
    7. new jawa TL Assy & flower nuts- around 1.2k including courier
    8. new rims & spokes- 550rs per rim KOYO Brand, 5rs per spokes
    9. new silencers- 2300rs pair
    10. Electroplating on bend pipes, crash guard, handlebar etc-around 2.5k
    11. new headlight Assy- 650 bucks
    12. sticker & number work - 400rs
    13. electrical works, new horn, a used battery - 750rs
    14. Labour - 3k apprx
    15. Paper work - 6k [11 years pending tax & fine + fine for renewal of fitness]

Altogether, it costed me more than 26k to make her in decent shape. I've also collected spare parts on a huge scale. Atleast worth 25-30k. Including IPL Pistons[almost all sizes], engineer pistons 2mm, IPL Rings, gaskets, auto clutch assy, clutch plate sets, clutch bell, clutch centre, pressure plates, oil seal kits, points & condensors, speedometer, all rubber parts, kick lever, kick & lay shafts, all bearings SKF, crank pin Assys, main stand pins, swing arm bushes, all engine inner washers, pins, kick springs, star bush etc, brake shoes, cables, kick rachet, clutch samoosa, aluminum oil seal, handle nut, nail keys, key type ignition assy, clutch chains, con-sets, side panel screws, Pacco P43 carb & jets etc etc items

    Thread Approved
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Great restoration and nice collection of spares!

The front drum plate is missing..and that would complete the look. Were you not able to get one?
Any specific reason for changing the silencers and what make are these? Do you still have the original ones?

      Cheers,
      Sohaibak

Thanks for the very detailed cost breakup and details Arun Cheloor. I am glad another 2 stroker has been rescued from the junkyard. If you don't mind my asking, I am curious to know how much you had to shell out for the bike. Please PM me if you could share.

          @ Sohaib

Thanks man. The front drum plate broke while doing electroplating. I've bought a new one from Delhi. Will be installed next time when i visit my workshop. The silencers got damaged while doing chrome job. So many tiny holes appeared on the surface. was beyond repair. I dont know the make of the new silencers. I dumped the old pair.

          @ Srikany

I paid 45k for my bike. So, i ended up spending around 75-80k altogether for my Jawa. Kerala has got very limited number of 2-strokes running on road these days. Being a consumer state, prices are always high here. Sad. RDs cost not less than 2 Lacs here.

BTW, I am yet to see a Jawa in Prague. Strange! There are hardly any left.

My Jawa painting was just a normal one. Nothing fancy like Dupont etc. I used regular "Jet Black" colour. Infact, im not that satisfied with my painter's workmanship. I can see some bulges of old paint here and there on the surface due to not scrapping off the old paint properly.

That is very unfortunate Arun, I have been told that the best way to get anything painted is to get a good sandblast job followed by an expoxy primer coat on everything which goes into every nook and cranny of the frame and panels. Expert painters quote light base coats of upto three times ending with two coats of clear quote. All this in a proper pain booth where each paint coat is cured properly goes a long way in getting the immaculate finish that not only looks good but lasts a very long time and the best thing is that you have the peace of mind.
