  • RX 135 Questions

    Hi, guys!

First, I'm guessing I've posted this in the wrong location so please tell me how to get to the 'Help Me' section for further notice. Thank you sincerely.

I'm working on my RX and I have a few questions about my bike:

    1. I finally got a friend's bike to keep with me for 2 weeks so now i can get my bore rebored. i'm going to open it up and take just the bore (piece) with the old piston to the most popular reboring place in hyderabad, 'diamond reboring' in naampali i think (near the railway station).

Question> will they have the ART pistons available there or should i have it ordered from one of you gentlemen? I just need a good piston it doesn't have to be ART, just whichever u recommend. I think the mechanics here like to use USHA pistons ....the name itself is scary.

    2. Tank Cap/Cover makes a lot of vibrating noise. If i touch it with one hand while riding, the noise quickly stops but if i let go... rattle rattle rattle. Last year I changed the oil cap and the sound went off but again its back.

Question> Any solution for this that I can do by myself? Or would u recommend a gooder quality cap that one of you gentlemen might be able to sell me?

    3. Bangalore RX 135s sound so close to the beautiful RX 100s..

Question> what do they do to their exhausts to make them get that trebly fling fling sound? (sorry for my weird description). I chopped my muffler and now it sounds better but still FLAT... not vibrant like an RX 100 sounds, i hope u get what i mean ...i've heard some SEXY 135's in bangalore. what a note!

    4. reducing vibrations on bike: the handle bar vibrates alot and so does the rest of the bike (which is common i suppose). Just one point in the right side of my back has been hurting like someone keeps sticking a needle in there constantly. I made the mistake of riding like this for several months now... finally got my Footrests bent back into alignment (the right one was higher than the left one) ...now i feel better after long 30 minute rides too.

Question> how can i reduce the vibrations at the handlebar ends as well as at my feet and bum? what about putting (is it) hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear?

    5. digital speedometers

Question> any of you gentlemen use digital speedometers? I removed my full front assembly of the headlight and the gauges so i have a rally feel and i absolutely love it. and i put an autorickshaw headlight on there... exactly where the horn used to be - just replaced units. (i haven't put up any pictures coz my wires are all over the place and yawl will hate to see it like that)

    5. tools to keep on the bike: i noticed that my wheels will need 21 and 19" wrenches if i have to take them out on a trip (puncture maybe).

Question>how do u carry such big wrenches/spanners in the tool box? are there smaller versions of these that i can find somewhere?

    6. Second gear not hitting smoothly: I'm guessing most of you have faced this problem on ur RXs. When i shift up from 1 to 2 sometimes it doesn't shift and i embarrass myself coz i've raised the throttle but i'm somewhere between 1 and 2 (like neutral) and everyone's seeing me NOT jumping forward but with lots of show-offy 2-stroke sound

    7. Autolube pump

Question> if i want to NOT be stock. And mod my bike to go the fastest it can and strongest it can, do i need the autolube pump? my mechanic stole mine but i'm thinking of getting a new one coz some people say its good for the engine to have one (even if i put 2T oil in the main petrol tank with petrol).

    8. What kind of info will be required from me to have someone build a deadly expansion chamber for me?

Thank you, you awesome gentlemen! I've already learnt a lot from XBHP. Thank you in advance!

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

ART pistons will defnitely NOT be available with the machinist. Its a bit too expensive for the clientile usually these guys cater to. ART came as OE for RX-135. Why don't you begin by placing an order for it in a YASS? My pick in among Hyderabad YASS would be Patnys. If you do have to resort to 'sourcing' it from 'friendly two strokers' please be guided about the rate. I paid ~1.1-1.2k almost a year ago for this.

      2. Tank Cap/Cover makes a lot of vibrating noise. If i touch it with one hand while riding, the noise quickly stops but if i let go... rattle rattle rattle. Last year I changed the oil cap and the sound went off but again its back.

I am currently facing this issue on my RX100. Did you change the lock on the tank cap? I am not aware of any ingenious solution. You can buy a tank cap and use the lock that comes along with it or buy an used one which doesn't have this issue.

Question> what do they do to their exhausts to make them get that trebly fling fling sound? (sorry for my weird description). This question has been answered in detail by Sriram in multiple threads. I'll just say Bangalore strokers probably sound better because we have better technicians to work on RXs here.

Question> how can i reduce the vibrations at the handlebar ends as well as at my feet and bum? what about putting (is it) hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear?

You need to diagonose the problem rather than treating the symptom. Vibrations can be for host of issues. How is the bike performing? Accelerations, cruising, cold starts, kmpl, etc

Are you coming from 4strokes? If yes, then eat well and do some leg exercises :-D

What is good for the engine and your pocket is constant accurate metering of 2T oil. You decide which method is the best :-)

I answered whatever I could. Also, may I suggest you to try Microtek (Vijaydeep) here in Bengaluru for re-bore. Its worth the pain. I don't know how good that Diamond guy is in Hyderabad but if you are confident then go ahead.

ART though not easy to find is priced at Rs. 1384/- . available till size .50mm. Find out what size are you going to require.

Try to check whats making the noise. the hinge can be loose or the rubber gasket that seals the cap needs to be changed.

        3. Bangalore RX 135s sound so close to the beautiful RX 100s..

Question> what do they do to their exhausts to make them get that trebly fling fling sound? (sorry for my weird description). Nitin would know better on this.

        4. reducing vibrations on bike: the handle bar vibrates alot and so does the rest of the bike (which is common i suppose).

One of the reasons for bad vibrations is unbalanced crank. Check if your handlebar is original.

        5. digital speedometers

Digital speedos can only be used with digital CDIs with a tacho out feature.

        5. tools to keep on the bike: i noticed that my wheels will need 21 and 19" wrenches if i have to take them out on a trip (puncture maybe).

Question>how do u carry such big wrenches/spanners in the tool box? are there smaller versions of these that i can find somewhere?

Make a customised tool kit of your own for long trips. Also include a puncture kit and a foot pump.

Gearbox and shifters need to be checked.

Autolube is always good and reliable if the bike is maintained well. Yes a new pump can be found.

        8. What kind of info will be required from me to have someone build a deadly expansion chamber for me?
Firstly, you will need someone real who knows chambers and has built a few calculated chambers.

Thank you, you awesome gentlemen! I've already learnt a lot from XBHP. Thank you in advance!

          thank you nitin and yamdoot

Thank you Nitin and Yamdoot for answering my questions for me.

Art piston: Regarding the art pistons, i will check out the Patny YASS asap to see if they take orders for it. First, i'll have to take out the bore and get it sized up to know which size i need to buy. I know someone visiting thailand in march so now that i know the rates here (thank u yamdoot and nitin), i'll know if its worth it to buy it there. bangkok i think.

Reboring: Nitin I do not know the guys at this diamond reboring place. but mechanics all over the city seem to take their cylinders to them to get them drilled. like for all sorts of machines i imagine. but i will try to find Microtek Vijaydeep in Bangalore.

May I ask u where this is located in bangalore? I will try to look for it online anyways.

Digital Speedometers: Yamdoot ;-) they have these digital speedos with a sensor on the forks of the front wheel i think and every time the wheel made a rotation it.... u know what, i feel so unintelligent even describing it this way.... i'll study up about the Digital CDIs.. thank you for the tip.

Nitin: that was funny, man... and NO i am not from the 4 stroke generation. i don't know y i think all of them sound like generators with wheels plonked onto them. the only 4 stroke i liked is the bullet and FINALLY now the KTM Duke 200. ohhh, i rode my friends bike in bangalore quite a lot and i went mad. it is perfect in every way. And i'm hoping to buy the 390 when it comes out in march. but the duke is the closest i've come to 2-stroke adrenalin rush and added to it u get pure perfect engineering with the clean braking and handling and confidence it gives to u to encourage the stunt crazy boy in u.

story aside, i will check the gears on my bike soon. i still have opened the transmission of my bike yet. i can't wait to.

nitin, me and u on rx's ...i bet i'll beat u ;-) .....i know i know... it just that i have to say SOMETHING after ur 4-stroke comment so...

toolkit: yamdoot, ya for long distances i have a set but for short 15 km rides to work and back... the other day i had this pretty girl riding with me on my rx on like our first date and i got a flat. i had to find an auto rickshaw and all... the date wasn't ruined but it would have been cooler if i had that big spanner in my bag. its just so inconvenient. 21" i think.

bike vibrations: they don't happen tooo much that its unbearable... i will look into the unbalanced crank u mentioned.

tank cap: i did not replace the lock nitin, i'll check the rubber seal and see.

exhaust note and chamber: guess i'll have to take my bike down to bangalore to for these 2 points. i'll look for recommendations for mechanics to go to for my RX. i know a mechanic in kamanahalli who is friends with racer pramod joshua who is a friend of my cousin's. a tamil man who has been doing racing bikes for a long time i think.

i've noted down each of ur suggestions. thank you again for your time and ideas.

By Digital meters i meant Tachometer. My bad. Yes you can also do with a Sigma cycle computer like Kb100 suggested.

yes, these r the ones that i was thinking about. so it IS possible. i'll work on it. thank you for your replies.

                Reboring Doubt:

Please tell me, is there a lot of expertise required to rebore a cylinder specifically used for racing? I am just wondering if I can take my bore to the gentlemen at the most popular places and get their advice on size of piston needed and then have them rebore the thing for me and i myself find a piston to match the new bore size.

Nitin, please tell me if there is a risk involved and what it is... for me to absolutely have to go to a good RX mechanic to get my reboring done.

Thanks Nitin and each of you in advance for helping me understand and clear my doubts on this topic.

My two cents: I didn't get what you mean by the highlighted part. To me its pretty straight forward. Yamaha recommends 4 oversizes and your next over size is determined (usually) by the one you are running currently. Correct way of doing that would be to get your bore measured by a bore guage and go for the next oversize. Also, you bore based on the Piston you intend to use and not the other way around. You need to provide the machinist the intended piston so that cylinder can be bored to proper clearances.

Improper clearances (depending upon if the clearances are too tight or otherwise) can result in seizure, poor compression, cylinder, con rod damage and poor performance. Yes, you need to find a good machinist to do this. Else you will not be very happy with the performance.

I have no idea about racing though. All this is for street use.

                    Hi Nitin,

sadly for Rx135 yamaha recomends only 2 oversizes..

thank you so much, NitinGirish. I understand what u say. I really want to do as much as possible by myself (just to learn and c if it can be done fully by myself without mechanics). So, first i'll need another bike to use ;-) and second, find a bore gauge: now on my purchase list.

                        thank you again.

p.s: i am sorry for my late reply. kind of disappeared there for a few weeks.

You will get two (or more) bore kits for the price of a bore gauge!! Just take it to Microtek in Bengaluru and be done with it.

By the way, you come very highly recommended by Sriram. And i hope to have the privilege of talking with you about our Rx's soon.

Also, i want to thank Sriram for being so generous to share almost one hour of his time with me on the phone discussing all the details of my 135 and clearing up doubts i had in my mind regarding them.

                            Thanks, Sriram. Thank you XBHP.
