  • RX 100 Tank solution

i hope its not a silly query.
I have an old yamaha RX100 Tank, 1996 model. now the pinstrip/sticker on the tank has faded and turned white but the paint is in good condition.
i wanted to know if it is possible to remove the pinstrip/sticker and not repaint the tank. only the pinstrip should come off.
    i'am attaching a picture.

if there is a possibility. please tell me the procedures .Thanks .

        RX 100 Tank solution

If the lacquer coat is not there on the tank it's ok to peel off the old sticker. I think the old bikes didnt have it! If the lacquer is there the surface will become uneven and due to the thickness of the lacquer coat.
I think it's going to be time consuming as the sticker has aged well and won't come off as a single piece. Make sure you don't use any metal objects to peel it of. Choose something plastic and do everything slowly. You can apply a little kerosene or petrol to remove the glue smudges.

All Rx100 tanks with stickers had a lacquer over it.

The best way to remove those stickers.... may be little rude but it worked like charm belive me. take a hot air blower or good hair dryer, and set the heat to disform any clear plastic covers. once tested slowly blow over any corner of the sticker. with the help of razor sharp utility knife slowly peel one end of the sticker followed by hot air blowing. lacquer gives a way to depart the sticker. glue wont be sticky it got hardend these years of sun exposure. finaly apply 3m liquid polish over the area and rub to polish it.

Note: dont focus the blower to a particular area for long period..keep moving over the sticker circumferance constantly.

Thanks for the reply vijay meyou and Rx dude ...ill try both your methods one on each side ..ok the lacquer is absent afasik ..coz the feel of plastic/ paper is there on the sticker and not the smooth lacquer..so i guess it should be less troublesome

Also, can the lacquer layer be applied back to the tank ?

Also if you guys can guide me with ways to store the Fuel tank. im keeping the new OEM away to be used in the future. but since i have already used it a little
i fear it getting rusted from the inside. so what do i do to store it without it getting rusted.

Pack the tank back in the original carton, the tanks have some coating inside but since you have used it drain away the remaining petrol and dry the tank properly. For added safety you can add a little 2T oil to the tank so that it forms a thin layer and drain away the excess.
If you are not doing the above method (This method is neither tried nor tested i am just assuming) you can keep a few silica gel packets inside the tank to prevent moisture.

I would just ask you to keep the tank as is and if need by order another maroon tank like me and run. What you got is a classic, even though the color fade is seen but there aren't many on the roads with this pattern for sure. Anyways it's your choice.

Another suggestion is that keep the tank polished to minimize the shine or paint scheme fading.

hi sriram...actually im planning to sell off my RX 100 ..the one i had rebuild...so have taken off everything that had put on it and have slowly been dismantling
it myself and putting back the old parts that came with the bike back on it...it still asking for repair ..now the frame has started to rust ...many OEM parts from yamaha rusted in the first rain.
i got so sick of spending such a huge ammount ..decided to sell it...and i plan to keep the new tank ...so thats why i asked how to store it ..without it rusting !

pour atleast 100 ml 2Toil on the tank and make the tank upside down and tilt to get the 2t oil spread fully accross the tank areas and drain the excess oil to store it. dont wrap the tank with newspaper since newpaper printed ink has copper sulphate on long run it will cause blister over the contacted area. (Its my personal experiance)
