  • [Photo Feature]: Help with Yamaha Rx135 Piston Sizes

    Dear All,

My Yamaha Rx 135 is currently have the piston as in the picture. My piston rings are worn out and make sound, so my mechanic suggested to do a boreing job and put new piston rings and piston. SO its a request to all to suggest me a piston of that can be used after boreing.

    Thanks is Advance.

If going for a rebore, you will have to bore it to next oversize which is 0.75 mm. Since ART piston is only available upto 0.50 mm you can try a Goetze piston or a Mahle one, UHSA pistons are available too but I'm not sure if the quality is good as their sewing machines. Maybe just replacing the rings will do the trick, your piston seems to have very low amount of carbon deposit which is good. How much the bike has ran since the last rebore?

Try this before you go for a re-bore
        a) Changing the piston rings. If that should suffice, you would save a bore.
        b) In case you do have to re-bore, please get it done on a CNC machine. There is not much difference in the sizes and the local chaps might mess-up your bore.

My bike has done around 20k since last rebore. Would have last longer, but it was abused by my friends during hostel days.

Which company rings should I use? I am thinking of going for a rebore with slips and standard ART piston. Will it hamper performance?

Try the OEM rings, they are available upto .50mm overbore. If changing rings doesn't do the trick then rebore to .75 mm. I have no idea what you mean by slips but I guess you meant sleeving the bore. If that's what you meant, there is no need to do so as you still have two rebores left, sleeving will lead to other problem most of the time.

Please post a pic of the piston from the sides too. This will help members to advice further. How many kms has the current piston done? while you take the piston out, get the gudgeon pin and its bearing checked too.

i have seen boring done on lathe machines, is it the same you are referring or CNC machines are different?
if yes, what are the advantages of reboring on CNC?

CNC machines have accuracy in microns which is ideal for a bore job. Lathe guys cant match that accuracy.

Sleeves are made of iron alloys and most of the time are very reliable, the engine is bored on an boring machine and bored to larger size so that the new iron sleeve can be inserted in it, the sleeves can either be pressed into the cylinder or it can be heat shrinked, after fitting the sleeve cylinder needs to honed truly, but all of this requires tremedous accuracy and accurate machines, if sleeving is not done properly engine will run hot and will not hold up for very long,i doubt that in our country one will be able to find proper sleeving shops who have got proper machinery and knowledge of doing this kind of job.
