  • Need help in restoring RX 100

Hey Guys!, I've got a 1989 Yamaha RX100 which i got from my Dad. He got it in his 11th std and I got it in my 10th

    Initial problem:
The bike was kept idle for more than 3 months due to clutch problems. Then we gave it to full repair. The clutch became ok and i took it for a ride, The throttle was insane. If i open it full the bike would choke and power cuts off. The mechanic didn't notice it. Then there used to be some purring noise at mid revs and took time to go to high revs. The mechanic told that it needs a engine rebore. My dad decided to change everything that didn't work properly
    • Brakes (Front & Rear)
    • Suspension (Front and Rear)
    • Chassis Alignment (Stay Bush)

Then got the bike back. They asked me to not to cross 40kmph for 1000km and no high revs.

    Current Problem:
Now there is a small problem in Carburetor and there is just no power at all. There are other minor problems too. So I've decided to:
    • Buy authentic MIKUNI carburetor
    • Change body panels and tank(rusted)
    • Full engine repair (Dad says there is no Compression Ring)
    • Full gear box and Clutch repair (Gear shifts automatically in high revs)
    • Change complete electrical wiring
    • Brakes
    • Indicators and Mirrors (broke them)

So guys, I need help in finding the best mechanic in Chennai and also authentic parts. I want to go out there are start beating my friends in drag races. Most important of all I want my bike to be restored to original setting and no compromise in using alternate parts. Please Help!

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

For the carb issue make sure the float height is set properly and use a good quality fuel filter and change the old brittle fuel lines. Check the condition of the fuel tap as well. If the tank as mentioned below is rusted then its clogging the carb and fuel lines.
      • Buy authentic MIKUNI carburettor - authentic mikuni carbs are very rare but u can find a good used example which has not been tinkered much. If not change the internals of the existing carb which are worn off.
      • Change body panels and tank(rusted) - RX100 tank and side panels are available at the yamaha showrooms. Maroon with gold line and black with gold line and their respective side panels are available. Price of the tank is Rs 3600 and the side panels around Rs 660 and monograms and emblems with their locking clips extra.
      • Full engine repair (Dad says there is no Compression Ring) - The RX100 new cylinder kit is available again at the showroom for Rs 8200 MRP which comes with the cylinder, piston, rings and the pin and clips. Keep ur original bore as a back up.
      • Full gear box and Clutch repair (Gear shifts automatically in high revs) - For the gearbox, when you strip the engine, see the parts that are worn. RX gearbox wont wear off that quickly and can take up to some level of abuse. For the clutch assembly again its available and the basket code now starts with 4X8 and the plates and inners with springs and nuts are available. Get new shift shaft as well and change the bearings. When its being assembled back be with your mechanic and ensure that before he locks the crankcase the shifting through the gears are happening properly and then only lock it up. Also the gearbox oil of the correct grade.
      • Change complete electrical wiring - RX100 came with 6V wiring. Get the coil plate, magnet, rectifier and CDI of the RX135 which is 12V and then get the wiring kit of the RX135 with its left handle bar switch. Change all the bulbs to 12V and you are ready to go with the 12V conversion.
      • Brakes - If you want to keep it stock the RX100/135 front and rear wheel brake drums and plates with the brake liner are available at the yamaha showroom. Change it along with the new wheel axle, wheel bearings, swing arm axle. Change the rims to hero honda CD100 ones as they are of better quality and will bring it back to stock spec of braking. Otherwise for front you can buy the gladiator disc brake assembly which is a direct fit. Needs the front wheel spoke hub, spokes( if gladiator spokes are not available then you can go for old type pulsar disc brake spokes), disc rotor, master cylinder and hose with the calliper and brake pads.
      • Indicators and Mirrors (broke them) - Old alpha toyo mirrors are rare. But you can get the new mirrors and indicators from the yamaha showroom.

For the mechanic option our chennai members will be able to suggest you one. But from my angle a mechanic who is competent and knows about RX and come and do it at your home will be the best bet than you dumping all the parts at the mechanics place and waiting indefinitely for him to do the work and getting parts missing in between
