  • Touring with RX 135 (500+ km)

    Hi,

I have thoroughly checked the various threads and haven't seen much light on experiences of riders having done long rides (300+km in a day) on a 2 Stroke bike. I am particularly interested about RX 135.

Can some one who has done this share their good/ bad experiences?

I am looking at doing a Bangalore > Pune in December following the complete engine rebuild of my RX 135 to stock conditiosn. I do not plan to do the ride in one stretch, but I hope to do two sets of 400kms. It would be great if senior 2 strokers could give some tips and pointers about how I should prepare the engine to keep it as cool as possible, and supplies I should carry.

To give a little background, I have ridden Cochin <> Mumbai on my Hero Honda Hunk 6 times before and have done upto 890 km in one day. So I am prepared for the physical challenges. I need to make sure my bike doesn't suffer much

    Query Approved

I've known many folks who've done more than 500+ on a single day in a 2S, "but" with appropriate breaks. I'd suggest not to take the bike right away for such a huge stretch, after the restoration. Let the bike clock in say, around 500 to 600 KM break-in, le minimal at least before purging her in and out. This gives you an idea as to how the bike behaves, and the fuel/oil ratio check etc.

But trust me, you'd have even more fun doing solo on a 2S.

Also do keep these things in handy, ( a must if you ask me) keep a spare spark plug, the right plug spanner, 14mm plug wrench in this case. And just a can of 2T oil just, since not all pumps (cash constrained, I call them ) sell 2T oil either in can or what not.

Also a spare accelerator wire and a clutch cable would do good, but if it's new and in the right slack, one need not worry much.

    Ride safe!

    Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

Thanks VJ. What you are saying makes sense.
I am definitely planning to do set in with atleast 700-800 km between rebuild and the trip. And yes, riding solo is the best. Would always prefer to do that, and this time as well.

Thanks for the list of spares and tools. This is quite handy for me.

      Cheers!

I am surprised no one is warning me of engine seize. I have been reading some RX specific issues on highways in other threads. (http://tinyurl.com/engineseizure )

Lube the engine correctly with properly set autolube or with correct fuel-2t mix and the Rx135 can go longer distances with ease. My dad used his Rx for touring for near 15years. It still runs like new.

Wow! Thanks Balgi. Thats quite assuring. I was thinking I'd switch to fully synthetic 2t oil and go auto lube (and may be additionaly mix oil to fuel exclusively during the highway rides). What do you think?

I had done a tour on my RX 135, a few years back. Lovely experience it was. Please ensure your oil pump is working and u carry adequate bottles/ pouches of oil.

Believe me its a beautiful experience touring on a Rx. Very recently my friend here from Mumbai had done Leh Laddakh on his RXG. Its a very simple machine and hence it will do the job with ease. I had done the tour only in daylight, so would advise you not to ride thru the night time to enjoy the beauty of riding and the scenic deccan roads of the route you mentioned.

Ofcourse, The Great. I have read that thread quite a few times as I was prepping myself for this ride. I am curious to know how you went about preparing the bike for the ride and what challenged you faced, if any.

Do you have some bits about your friend's ride to Leh ? What was the max km he covered in a day & in a stretch? What was his best cruising speed ? Did he face any break downs?

Like I mentioned earlier, I have done the Kerala > Mumbai stretch through both the routes (NH 17 and NH 4) many times in day and night. I agree nothing more beautiful (and scary ) than the night ride. With RX some how I'd prefer the daylight and I am sure you can see why..

You could do that. It will offer additional protection to set autolube as well as to add 2t to fuel. Though the bike is built strong enough that double protection is not necessary.

Fully synthetic gear oil can be used though again not absolutely necessary. It'll offer good protection and a smooth ride though.

Btw do you find the stock lighting adequate? If not what measures are you taking?

Re: Touring with RX 135 (500+ km)

i have done 70 kms and 100 kms in a stretch in Summer and Winter seasons respectively. i dint went beyond that limit without stop.
my ride is RX135 4S in stock condition. i rode on 60~70 kmph constant speed in winter and dint found any problem.
in summer, i observed ride is revving hard, say 3k rpm in idle after riding for 50 kms non stop on constant speed of ~40kmph.

by 'constant' i mean 'most of the time', i keep revving high and low in between as i use autolube and my mechanic suggested me to keep varying accelerator.

Re: Touring with RX 135 (500+ km)

Engine Seize happens when you dont know how to ride a 2S. I have done quite lot of tours on my RX - Agra to Lucknow (more than couple of times); Agra - Nainital; Agra - Jaipur; Delhi - Chamba Valley; Delhi - Dehradun.

The only thing you need to take care are:

                      1. Do not stress the engine: Ride at 70-80kmph and beleive me you can do 500k + easily.
                      2. 2-Stroke engines are more prone to heat. So a break after 1.5-2hrs for around 15-20mins is good.
                      3. Keep a check on the 2T-Oil which is the most important and please carry it in spare as per the consumption.
                      4. For touring keep the spares - Spark Plug, Plug Spanner, Accelerator/Clutch Wire, Headlight/Indicator Bulbs.
                      5. Plan good for the route and see that you will keep on riding.

Well I am planning to do a ride soon again on my RX lets see when.....

Its very easy to ride 500 km in a day on RX. I did it lot of times on my RX 135. Avoid riding in Night as it will be difficult in case of puncture or any other break down And trucks and other big vehicles wont care for 2 wheelers. So ride in daytime for maximum distance. take break in 1.5 hours as it will be good to stretch out yourself and cooling the bike.

Things to Carry : Plug, Plug Spanner, Waste cloth, Set of wires, knife/Blade, Electrical tape, Headlight Bulb, 1/2 or 1 litre petrol in bottle, Sufficient 2T Oil, Spanners -10-11, 12-13, Screw Driver, Star Screw driver etc.

Drive at a speed of 60-80 kmph, If revving hard, don't do it constant for long time. Put 2T oil little more than usual. If direct in tank it should be 40-50ml / Litre petrol. Don't tighten the chain too much. Check the clutch and accelerator cables. These are enough and you are good to go.

Enjoy riding and wish you happy riding.
Happy & Safe Riding to All
