  • Yamaha R5 cylinders on RD350..??

Hey all you guys...just had a doubt..Im working on a RD350 project..and got a pair of cylinders from the states..The cylinders were sold as RD350 cylinders but just after shipment the guy realised that these were R5 cylinders...The Yamaha R5 was the predecessor of the RD350 .the only difference being, the RD has reed valve induction while the R5 was piston port induction...I was told that the R5 cylinders will not work in the RD350....but yesterday again I was told by another RD owner that the R5 cylinders could be used and that they might actually produce more power than the RD cylinders....can that be done..??? can I use a R5 350 cylinder on the RD350..all the tech guru's out there please clear the doubt...appreciate your help..thanks!!

Thanks man..Yeah the R5 was not sold here...it was sold in the US till 1972 as a successor to the DS7 and a predecessor to the RD350...the only difference between the R5 and RD is the Induction type as I said above...!!

Yes, the R5 was piston ported.. means had no reed valves, was missing the famous "torque induction", [missing the "boost port", i.e the 7th port ] and there were only 5 gears..i believe the carbs were a bit different from the RD ones VM28SC [ correct me if im wrong] and the oil lines were different too.. they were plumbed into the intake boot.. not into the carb body. the bore & stroke were the same 64-54mm though.. but whether they'll fit the Indian RDs or not.. only experts can answer.. Raju sir , its upto you now..

Piston ported engines are things of the past. Reed valve induction is better. I wonder how someone could say that with a piston ported barrel u get more power.
Like Arun said, the famous Boost port will be missing and you'll all the way be missing the true RD essence.
Check if you can swap the Barrels. Try getting the US Spec RD barrels.
Check with Rajkumar himself, he is the man for this.

R5 = piston port induction. Piston will have no intake holes unlike the reed valve induction

no reed valve hence insane top end coz flow is unrestricted unlike the reed valve system..will make an excellent drag project
finding pistons will be tough if you don't have them already
the bottom end is lame compared to the RD cylinders
you'll need the 5DP7 needle and corresponding primary type emulsion tube too in the VM28 carburetor and the airjet opened 2mm
all the best for your project
