  • Story of a 10k RD350 - Bought in parts since 2006!!!

    Hi All,

Starting this thread as any RD deserves to have her story told separately. Here it goes -

I returned from the US after a 5 year stint and find my Yezdi sold of, CBZ screwed up by a relative beyond recognition. The RD (Cupid) started to show her age and was in need for a cosmetic make-over. So I embarked on a journey to buy a new Yezdi and restore the CBZ and get the RD engine running right and do up the cosmetic later. Since 2012, I was able get a new Yezdi, patched up the CBZ, bought an Kawasaki Enduro, a Bobby Rajdoot and 1962 Enfield (both these beauties are still waiting for their turns to shine).

Finally when all the other bikes were done up, the hunt for spares for the RD began. During the process a lot of stuff was purchased (2 sets of Cylinders, pistons, crank, exhaust, carbs, reeds, Ottoco heads and whole loads of goodies). I had also bought an RD engine way back in 2006 from my mechanic (Never realised that 9 years later it would transform into a 2nd RD).

Come 2014, the RD I had goes for a strip-down and due to the nature of my build all the parts on the bike are something that are not needed anymore. (The funny thing is..since 2005 my mech. kept adding parts to my RD never telling me from which bike they came from).
Other Guy -"RD ka shaukh mat karo if you don't have money for it".

Me"Sleeved and Faridabad waali spares RDs ko RD ka shaukh karna nahin bolte hain...its called waste of money".

Never heard from him again :P

    Cut back to 13th Feb, 2015 -
My original bike Cupid was being assembled piece by piece. That night when having a late night cutting chai and seeing all the parts lying around (These were slowly scavenged from the bike I bought over the years) I asked my mech. the story about the engine he had sold me in 2006 and what about the Chassis and the paper work and other spares.

He tells me the story of how in 1995, he had bought an RD from a friend who unfortunately died before he could transfer the bike. Over the years he had given the same engine to me and plugged in lot of spares from that bike on my original RD Cupid. Something just hit me, where is the Chassis and papers (does he have the forms and all).
There came a curt reply saying that the Chassis is lying around in one corner and that he has the copies of the paperwork. I really felt that we should reach out to the RTO. Decide to call up the agent in and tell him to find details on the MZZ 8834 bike.
Have a few more cups of tea and smokes and go back to bed.

@Divya Sharan - My apologies for the duplicate post. For some reason I've seen a DB issue popping up. Noticed the same when I tried posting some pics on my Cupid thread.

        ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

There is not much of a restoration here. Its more of assembly and typical cosmetic stuff.

        Some notable mentions include -
        a. She's gonna get 2nd OS HT cylinders and US spec heads, other than that its going to be stock. Here are some links to the final look.

Can't upload pics from my office network, hence posting the links.

In the 3rd pic, The black RD was sold out in 2006 by my elder brother..sigh...

You seem to have a very good mechanic. Will reboring be done?

Yes, I've 1st OS HT bores and will bore them to the 2nd and then put them on.

As for the mech., He's now a very close friend. We started together from fixing of a BSA Mongoose cycle in 4th grade and this is how far we've come ( 22 years and counting).

The reason I was fortunate to have the original spares for another RD is everything came of my from my earlier bike.

The cafe bike is being build for sheer performance and will now be renamed as Diemos - God of Terror
The 2nd RD is how I've seen an RD all my life. This will now be called - Cupid - God of Desire

Everything, from the my Cafe bike is coming off and is just gonna be plugged into the new CUPID. Here are some specs of the Cafe Bike -

Go for 45T old Splendor sprocket or 47T RD 175 sprocket at rear. It will boost the pickup, atleast pickup will be better than the 42T sprocket.

Suggesting is not bad. But think about chain pitch, sprocket size, how will it fit and sprocketing and how it works.

My friend once fitted a 47T in his Splendor+ with a lengthy chain.
The first 2 gears were not at all usable, leave the clutch (while engaged in 1st gear) on idling rpm, front wheel will get on air a bit.
And this on the RD, it would be real fun. Thats why said.

And my Mechanic once said that RD350 had 49T rear sprocket, correct me if I am wrong. I am 99% sure I am wrong, just driven by my mechanic's word.
