  • [Photo Feature]: Suzuki Shogun

    Hello Everyone!
I am a new member of this forum. This is my first post on xbhp.
I recently bought a Suzuki shogun (1996). The bike looks good but there are few problems in the the bike.
I have almost gone through every thread on this forum on shogun. I had bought a shogun which I sold after using it for 2 months as it required an engine overhaul, cosmetic upgrade.I wasn't aware of the unavailability of the spares then and after searching for parts and hearing outrageous price quoted by many I decided to sell my gun for an YEZDI B type. After few weeks, I regreted my decision for selling my gun and that sound of that exhaust remained in my ears. So my hunt began for a good condition shogun and finally after going through a lot of pain I came across a good condition bike. I bought it for immediately.
The problems of the bikes are as follow:
    • There is little piston slap in the engine.
    • The engine feels a little stressed when riding with a pillion.
    • The bike flutters after 80km/h.
    • It revs hard but doesn't move that fast.
    • The tachometer doesn't work.
    • Oil pump doesn't work.
    • Signal indicators are different.
    • Missing oil tank.

The sound of the exhaust is different from my previous gun. I have attached the pictures of my gun below.
After speaking to my mechanic he said the the block will require a boring job. I am aware that OS ART pistons with SGP rings are impossible to get but can any of you suggest any other brand of piston which we do a fairly good job? Also,I don't know if the block has been rebored before but the guy from which i bought the bike claimed that it has standard block.
Also the fairing is aftermarket but it doesn't have the stickers on it. As of now, riding it the way it is and figuring out what more needs to be done. Will start the rebuild only after collecting the required parts.
Any comments from members will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

          Re: Suzuki Shogun

Couple of things, The shogun came with a straight chamber and the baffles were missing, the flute or the core was responsible for resonance and hence pushing the charge back to the cylinder through the exhaust port for a bigger bang. If you are missing the silencer you are missing the character of the shogun. Try to source the flute and remove all the baffles and fit the flute it will give similar results.

Reboring is not a solution to all problems, first you need to check the cylinder for scoring if its badly scored then you need to rebore else just replace the rings. The oil pump is available new, but I would never rely on it as its just unreliable and an oil starved 2T cylinder will seize.

Now for the oil tank you can get a samurai oil tank. they are available in plenty. The shogun tacho is the trickiest bit, if you don't have a working one chances of fixing yours is near to impossible and a new one would set you back by atleast 5k.

Brand new sticker kits are available and they will make your bike look the part once painted. Indicators can be procured and are available new. Regarding the fluttering, check the fuel flow, if the fuel filter is choked it can cause fluttering at high revs. Also get the carb cleaned once.

If you need any help feel free to ask.

Thanks for your valuable input sir. Have been through almost all of your threads, they are fantastic. Thats one of many reasons i couldn't
resist myself from buying the gun.
And yes sir, you are right the silencer does play a vital role in shogun performance. the adrenaline rush is missing when i ride the gun.
I will have the bike inspected thoroughly and will post the pics for your input. There is one more problem, I have to keep the idling of the bike on the higher side if i keep it on normal setting the bike just shuts off. Will check the silencer in chor bazaar next month as the prices quoted by some people are outrageous.

Get the carb opened and clean each hole with compressed air, get the needle jet opened and cleaned really well, clean the pilot jet well if available buy original pilot jet and replace it, replace the main jet as well.

What sathish has mentioned is the best source of shogun spares at MRP, though most of the spares originate from Mumbai and Delhi, start going to shops and ask around. You will find some great stuff for your bike. Please don't just buy things online, most of the stuff online is crap and exorbitantly priced. Remember not to throw anything you remove, all stuff will come in use some day.

PS: thanks for your compliments, things you said has made my day.

Thanks for the kind words, yes indeed, Same Guy. I am restoring a RXZ and a RX 135 5 speed, freshly out of a 135 4 speed build. I am a Yamaha Guy all day but the shogun took away a part of me when it left, at that time I had space crunch at my parking lot and a very angry wife who saw me going from one build from another and the parts just kept accumulating in the store room and it looked more like a mini junk yard.

I would buy another Shogun some day and will keep it.

I don't mind you riding the RD, provided you are willing to travel . Let me know if your Gun requires any support. I would be glad to help.
