Re: The 1971 Bullet 350 CI

Thanks a lot desideep for your valuable suggestions.

I do agree that we have to move on with things that will do the job and serve their purpose even though it's not 'Original'.

But the right mechanic, Afroz bhai whom I have ultimately found is well versed with the original spares and their settings, and thankfully the original spares are also available in the market.

The points are doing really fine after his magical touch, however I have been thinking about changing them to CDI type, if ever they happen to trouble me again. And yes there were times when I had to overlook family and business in the fever of getting the bullet into shape

Valves and cylinder head too are doing fine.

The bore piston kit that my bullet has, already have 5 rings (I have also seen kits with just 3 rings available in the market). Does CI electra has 6 rings?

The tappets were indeed of the brand Samrat, but I replaced them (as they were too noisy) with the bheed ones (these one are really quiet).

I will post the entire story that happened at Afroz bhai's garage in my next post. Was a bit occupied with work all these days and couldn't post it... However the bullet is doing absolutely fine now..

I Would suggest you to not to go CDI Route, cause in that you will have to change many parts on the bike, starting from the coils to almost half a crank (If you want to do it properly and authentically). Point replacement kit is best solution if you want your Bullet Standard to be a Standard.

And i remember something that My uncle told me who is one of the best two wheel mechanic in bathinda, He said that when you go to a mechanic with a old scooter or bike. he will always say "this is one amazing machine that you have all original saar, never sell it. " You know the reason why? Because these sort of so called Original bikes and scooter s will keep the mechanics business going. I remember with any new Vehicle i have bought i have kind of not given any business to my trusted mechanics for 3-5 years depending on the Warranty that comes with the Vehicle.
Now this story is told because the points do the same things for a Mechanic. You will always hear that the bike with the points runs better and has best thump. But the sad reality is that it is the only way you will have to visit your mechanic every 1000 or depending on geographic conditions early or late. where as with the electronic ignition you visit him every service duration that would be around 3000 KM

Valves and cylinder head too are doing fine.

As far as i remember The Bullet standard CI used to have 3 rings and Electra CI used to have 5 rings.

The tappets were indeed of the brand Samrat, but I replaced them (as they were too noisy) with the bheed ones (these one are really quiet).

Rockers do giveaway quickly there used to be a brand MSR something. they were really good i have never heard of Bheed ones, but if you are happy then thats what matters.

I will post the entire story that happened at Afroz bhai's garage in my next post. Was a bit occupied with work all these days and couldn't post it... However the bullet is doing absolutely fine now..

            A few of my learnings:

            1. Never let an incompetent mechanic touch your bullet.
            2. Turn the engine off only when it reaches the idle revving. Just to make sure you have not flooded the cylinder with unburnt fuel (this would cause starting problem).
            3. Turn the engine off using only decomp, just to make sure no compression is left in the cylinder. If the ameter deflates, bring it to zero and then turn the key off. That's the confirmation of not leaving any compression.
            4. While turning the engine on check if the compression is being built by kicking just a little bit (if the compression is not building up, your bullet wouldn't start). Once the ameter deflates, use decomp and release the compression and then kick to start.
            5. If there's a reverse kick. Wait for a minute to let all the fumes come out of the airfilter. Anyways, it wouldn't start even if you kick immediately so better wait. And then check for compression, use decomp and release compression and then kick to start.

It's been two months now, the bullet is doing fine. Did 2000kms, and got my second periodic servicing done. My gear box work was pending so got the ball bearings and bush replaced. No grinding sound from the gear box now.

That's all folks. I'm loving it...

Are you ready to get the mudguard UnChromed? Because though the Machismo mudguard is slightly bigger but the Classic series Model Mudguard is Broader than any other RE Model (notice it has indents where it passes near Shocks). I think that will make it look Bold and Noticeably Different while at the same time since its an RE part, it wont look like an odd part on the over all appearance.

This is my personal opinion though. Let us know which Idea you go for!

                        Thanks Satyam.

Even I think the Machismo mudguard would look better, if I'm not wrong that's how the CI engine Electra looked like. The mudguard was narrowed only when the UCE's were launched..

I am planning to buy an used Bullet 2001 model, done 58,000 kms. The bike is in Chennai. How much can I negotiate for this bike?
