• Issues with ignition system

Dear all,

I am intending this thread to be a once stop reference guide for all Ignition system related issues

I will start with the issue I am facing at the moment, then I will list out individual component failure symptoms for 2 Stroke bikes.

My RD was recently upgraded to an RDD ignition(static)

Finding an original RDD 90/100 kit is like looking for a long lost twin brother, who got lost in a maha kumbh mela(if you know what I mean).

I had the liberty to get a base 90/100 kit fabricated by team carbon(Renjith if you are reading this, thanks a ton!!), it basically has a modified Allied stator and a custom cut shogun magnet with a sleeve collar to ensure it performs better, they have 30 odd bikes running this setup, it has an additional internal pulsar coil bolted at 7 o clock position

The bike was performing awesome, I must have done 300-400 kms on it, the idling was spot-on, everyone(including me) who rode the bike was super impressed.

Finally one evening while returning from office the bike stalled when I opened the throttle. I kicked the bike(like there is no tomorrow) it was not starting, it did burble once, finally after 4-5 minutes of keeping it idle it came back to life, I rode another 2-3kms when I again decided to twist the throttle the bike died, I took it home limping and finally saw one plug was little wet and the other one had spot spark and was properly jetted, I have a crossover setup so they do balance out any issues in jetting if its off in one carb by a bit.

I swapped the plugs and it did the same thing again, now I was thinking maybe a weak fuelling might cause this since before the bike died I tanked it up fully, I replaced the fuel filters and it was not giving any spark, I let the bike as it is for a day and started it day before yesterday, it fired and idled well(not really, there was an occasional sputter) then it had no spark, I decided to take the ignition apart, first thing I did it removed the RDD CDI and installed an RX CDI after looping it(term used to fit a single cylinder CDI to a twin, involves splitting the HT input lead into 2 and connecting 2 HT coils instead of 1) it ran for 2-3 seconds and died, then no spark.

I replaced the plugs
The HT Coils
CDI
Re soldered the Pulsar/pickup coil

still no spark, The same RDD/RX cdi was used on a RX and it sparked alright.

Now the issue seams to be with the pulsar coil, I am buying 5-6 pulsar coils and replacing the one I have and keeping the rest as backup to see if that fixes the issue.

Thread Approved
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

yam: Which plug caps and ht coils do you use?

Use old activa/karizma/rtr caps with cd100 ht coils(power make). I believe its a plugcap issue.

If the plugcap etc are fine then the source or pick up coil has gone dud.

Agree with Bibhu. Pulsar should give at least 70 ohms on a multi

Re: Issues with ignition system

I am using non OE active Plug caps, this is what needs to be used in a RDD static CDI, it doesn't work well with the 5K caps.

I have checked the plug HT coils, they are splendour coils and are Varroc make, I also have a coil from Power make which was tested as well, The pulsar was giving > 70 Ohm on a multi which is good, the source coil was giving light output and the charging coil was keeping the battery charged so I figured that's not the issue, however I decided to send the coil plate with the magnet to Team Carbon for further troubleshooting, could be a case of bad connections as well. These intermittent issues are the ones that gives a lot of trouble.

I will update the thread with their findings, I will also use this thread to put symptoms of other ignition system failures, for others to refer.

Re: Issues with ignition system

Okay, so here was the issue, it had a blow pulsar coil, its now fixed. intermittent issues are the most toughest ones to fix.

I hope everyone knows what a bad ignition key can do in terms of faults, anyways this is what it does. Every pothole will kill the ignition, it might happen for such a small fraction of time that no one would actually know this one until it starts to intensify. First thing to do, add generous amount of WD40/zorick in the key hole, this would give immediate relief, but remember this not a permanent fix.

Others please feel free to contribute.
