  • Yamaha RX135 4 speed gearbox to 5 speed gearbox conversion

    I have Yamaha RX 135 4 speed 2002 model.
I’m planning to convert my 4 speed gearbox to 5 speed gearbox, why I’m converting coz two reasons: 1st -for experiment, 2nd – I always felt that RX 135 should have one more gear for more comfort ride. Top speed is not my concern but I don’t wanna disturb my current performance. Why I’m here I need experts opinions about the conversion. I have already discussed with my mechanic, arrange a 5 speed gearbox, he said. I don’t wanna blindly trust him, so seeking expert suggestion. I have two options for gear box
    1. RX king 5 speed gearbox (Taiwan made)
    2. Second hand RX 135 5 speed gearbox
There is no much cost difference, both available in around 7k to 8k. I will appreciate If anybody can help to find cheaper good quality gearbox. Which one will be a better option for me ?. I’m not planning to change my piston or block only gearbox. Can anybody explain the conversion process in detail ? (without change in piston setup). Do I need to consider any other changes for this. I’m not looking for very costly conversion, my budget is 10k including gearbox and labour. Do I have to change the clutch plate assembly also ? Any changes in engine housing?.

    Please help me. Thank You.

Not sure about the RX king gearbox wrt. condition or genuineness etc as I have never used the same. but if you are getting a 2nd hand 5 speed indian gb in good condition for about 5-6k go for it. nothing else needs to be changed per say. However, since you are going to be opening up the engine in any case you might as well replace all the bearings and oil seals. These are not very expensive

The engine housing is exactly the same for the rx100/rx135 4 or 5 speed. No need to make any changes to the clutch assembly either. its just as simple as removing the old gb internals and replacing them with the new.

In case you are planning to change to a 5 speed setup in the future, you would have to install the following

      5 speed cylinder kit
      5 speed carb
      5 speed head
      5 speed sprocket kit.

I have been using a 5 speed gearbox on my 4 speed rxz for a while now with nothing else changed. Works great and is a fun city ride. Cheers!
