  • Yamaha RX100 original crystal clear sound

    Hi guys,

This is my first post, so forgive me in case I miss anything or quote anything which is not a standard term.

I own a Yamaha RX100 year 1992 which is running perfectly.

The issue is the bike sounds a little bit muffled (soft) not like the original RX blasting sound. I'm not happy with the exhaust note and i need solution to get the iconic RX100 beat back on my bike.

I checked the inner core of the silencer its of RX100 and (not of 135). I judged this by comparing the size of the tube which is smaller on RX100 and larger on RX135

Also some YouTube channels show that altering the core with a steel pipe with no holes will result in the type of sound i wish.

    Please share your experience. Thankyou.

      1) with the current one you have, drill holes in the baffles [ the small disks in the silencer insert]

      2) or cut the insert around 20cm from the locking bolt area

      3) get a rd350 insert.

Boss we have to understand this very clearly that none of the yamaha rx bike's sound will be same as the other one. Still this is not clear why few yamaha rx 100 have the better sound than the others.

I myself faced the same issue brother. I'm gonna explain you the different kinds of sounds and how to get them:
          1. Hard, loud sound- You can start with cutting the muffler and welding a pipe to it. The loudness can be increased by shortening the pipe. So start long, say 20cm. Also drilling holes in the pipe alters the sound.
          2. Smooth sound- Using a 135 muffler does the trick. Also packing with glass wool will even lower the sound level.
          3. A little hard crisp sound- This is the one you get from a factory rolled rx 100 in the 80's. The Japan type mufflers are not available now but you can remove the caps of your muffler and see how it sounds. Then you can start reducing its length for a louder sound or weld the pipe for a harder sound.
          4. Motocross bike like sound- From what I have seen, this can be achieved by using an expansion chamber. This sound can further be tuned for a bassier sound with glass wool or shrilly sound with steel wool respectively.

Also heard that tinkering with the exhaust port a bit also changes the sound characteristics. I'm not sure but this is not needed for you. Hope this helps.

It's a nice information brother. Thanks for sharing this to us.
Coming back to sound so it is my personal experience that i have seen in many rx's there is always a different sounds that comes from every individual RX. Even in my own RX I have tried more than 70 pcs Muffler with alterations but didn't work for me. The sound I was always wanted to have is such a dream for me now. I have replaced 3 silencer just to get the original rx sounds but still I am trying to get it.

Re: Yamaha RX100 original crystal clear sound

I understand you brother. The reason why the sound varies from one rx to another is that few rxs run on 6 hole silencers whereas some run on 4 hole silencers. Also the mufflers vary from make to make. These combinations of various mufflers with the silencers create such a varied sound from one rx to another. For a crisp clear sound, I suggest you to just get a regular muffler and remove the caps. Nowadays you get the same muffler for a 100 or 135. If you really wish to do so, you can try cleaning the carbon in your silencer by using bleaching powder and water. Take care that it doesn't touch the chrome. But I don't think it will be necessary.

Brother as I told you I have done almost everything but it didn't help me though.
Currently I am using the ms steel gi pipe 22 CM in length welded in rx100 muffler( no holes). Followed the instructions from YouTube. Now the clear beat is coming but performance has been decreased.

Here is the link of my YouTube video.

Thanks and one of my friend is having 1987 yamaha rx 100 original single owner. I loved his bikes sound very low and choked sound.

Here is the link of the bike pls listen the sound with headphone and let me know how could I get the same sound.

That sounds like a stock muffler with years of carbon buildup mate! You can try glasswool packing with your metal pipe muffler. Or use OE muffler without caps and glass wool packing for low bassy sound. As you have different mufflers, experiment with those with packing mate. Glass wool packing will help you get the low sound. This also increases some back pressure and may help with initial torque. Don't know for stock silencers but packing helps especially for chambers in the lower range. Have few videos of my bike with different mufflers if you like but xbhp is not supporting unfortunately.

I have heard about glass wool but it would be great if you could send the video which you were talking about. Please ping me on whatsap 8092215320.

                    Thanks for helping me out.

hello. Yes i want the crisp sound can you please detail the difference between japan mufflers and Indian ones.
Also i read it somewhere that reducing the muffler length makes loud sound and increasing the length makes the original crisp beat.

[QUOTE=aniket madhavi;1395231]hello when i see inside the muffler from behind its has one hole and the rest is blocked should i make a hole in the rest as well?

Take the silencer and hold it from the front end, that is the part that goes closest to the engine with the part where the screw connects the insert to the muffler facing away from you.

In total there should be 7 or 8 discs that in the insert but the number can vary.

NOW there are TWO ways to go about it proceed as you require.

The very basic purpose of disc in the insert in addition to noise pollution is to force the pressure from the exhaust back to the engine, hence the piston gets pushed down more hence more pickup.

But as the pressure also prevents the piston from moving freely ( the back pressure forcing the piston down ) at higher rpm the engine could feel choked.

Conversely in the opposite if you remove the insert all together, apart from the extra noise, the engine free from the back pressure can go to higher RPM and hence slightly better top speed.

Now if you drill holes in the discs in the insert going closer to the engine you are reducing back pressure hence the pick up might fall a bit but the engine will feel more free.

But if you drill holes in the discs at the back near where the screw connects to the muffler you are not sacrificing back pressure up to that much as the discs near the engine would do an adequate job.

So try experimenting on which approach you would want first and then go off chopping off the insert usually the chop off point is 20 25 cm from the back part i .e where the insert connects to the muffler.

That's excellent explanation by Manan. I advise you to first experiment by removing the discs from the muffler. Then let us know if you are satisfied or not. The difference between Japan & Indian mufflers is that the holes on Japan ones are elongated and not purely circular. I think it is very hard to come across a bike running on one. Nevertheless, you can get the desired sound by modifying your current muffler.
                          Good luck.
