Good luck with the rebuild. Do keep us updated with the happenings. Would really love to see a re-built RD...

PERSEVERE... failure is not an option!

Bro....... I used an LT for 2 years in Hosur road traffic, the 2 very essential things that you should atleast make sure is a CDI(preferably RDD) and also make sure the air filter used is atleast a stock box KN and also check the airfilter box for any holes or gaps b/n pressed metal sheets or else it ll ingest a lot of dust(both my rds had this prob. This is the major factors that decides the life and fun of your bike. And both ll be a one time expense. My LT used to return 20 in city against 13 of my HT.

              Use it daily

I have used my RD as a commuter bike for 7 yrs now. Still running CB-points. Once the original rectifier was installed 4 yrs back, it runs like a dream.
My HT returns 15-18 kpl in traffic. Do not expect more ... it's a crime.

Hey Guys!! My RD is up and running.

The engine rebuild was done some time back.. didnt post earlier. I have completed more than 2K till now.
Its a budget rebuild with bare min investment just to get the RD running & be technically sound. Reliabilty was my primary concern.

                Detalis-
1984 LT (was running on Sahil pistons, & a salad of various components from many bikes).

Rebuild done by Mr Sumit Mehndiratta.
                • cylinder sleeved
                • standard size pistons - TKRs
                • wiring redone
                • all electricals changed
                • new clutch plates.
                • stock pilot and main jets
                • new rear shocks.
                • iridium plugs
                • autoescorts cdi installed (a month later)

Nothing fancy just bare essentials for now. Will take care of the cosmetics later on.

Thanks xbhp for being a wonderful resource and to everyone for all the suggestions.

I'm a noob... but here's my experience till now -
The bike has been more reliable than I expected. Also did a trip to Rishikesh.
Mileage was 20+ on the highways, dont know how much it is in the city.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the bike. There isn't much beyond 5k rpm, that some times spoils the fun. I'm not a fan of really high top speed, faster acceleration is what I seek, so I think I'll have to live with this brickwall.

I am brainwahsed literally everyday by friends, strangers, acquaintances, to sell off the bike, and I feel the only way to get back at them is - more power to the RD.

HAHA I have been in the same situation as you ... for the past 8 years now.
Careful now when u say "More power to the RD" ... Please steer clear from the "Porting" craze ... remember that the RD barrels are next to impossible to get ... As I say ... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

                      [QUOTE=sinhead;236774

                      My doubts are-
                      1. Will the Rd be able to take the stress of daily rush-hour traffic & the summer heat?
('coz I have heard from a few people that it tends to overheat).

                      2. What are the problems I should expect & what are the things to keep in mind, if I use it daily?

                      3. I have the RC which is expired & Sale letter. But I dont have the NOC.
Should I get the NOC, RC etc sorted out before I set out to restore it or should the bike be in running condition for RTOs to approve it. (as of now it is lying with a seized engine).
The bike is Delhi registered & I want it transferred to UP.

Hope to get some good advice

                      Thanks.[/QUOTE]
over heating is not a big problem dont worry about that, chk if the ignition is right, wiring(harness) is properly done and is in good condition, get it serviced time to time from a realiable guy who knows inside out of the bike, try to do things by ur self learn there are threads related to issue of RD.
first thing plan what do u want to do its always good to keep a vehicle with clean papers loke NOC,tax, insurance,if ur bike is from another it surely needs an NOC or else if ur caught the u know cops(will come out with hundred questions ot extract Cash from u)secondly if the bike is seized first decide if u want to restore it back to Showroom condition or just running condition as restoring an RD is hell of a work plan out what u want to do with the bike accordingly start collecting spares then go on for the build

Your RD must be messed up regardless of what CDK you are running. Something else is wrong with the bike...not just the ignition.

If it is not revving up to 8-9k at least then there is something wrong with it. You said it was struggling to rev to 5k which indicates an issue with the bike. Could be ignition, timing, jetting...a variety of potential issues. After adding RDD CDI you say it revs past 7k. How far past 7k? 8-9k is easy in a stock RD in good nick.

This is why I suggested you look for any other potential issue so you can sort it out and enjoy your ride a little bit more.

                              Nothing personal...

Yeah bro i understand i was using RXG CDI prior to RDD CDI then my bike struggled to rev past 5K as sinhead is experiencing n after installing RDD CDI it revs easily dont have the feeling that bike has hit a brick wall thats why i have suggested to go for RDD CDI
