    Thumbs up

I was actually going to add that in the earlier post... I need someone in Mumbai who knows about this stuff. Not someone who's necessarily a career mechanic but someone who knows enough to help me figure out how much this would even cost if I took it up. I'm also worried that since I live near the sea it might have accelerated the rusting.

I'm only a student right now (though I used to work) but I don't mind spending my savings in this as long as it'll pay me off in SOME sort of dividend later on.

I feel sad seeing this bike... It's right next to where I park my fazer

the only reason i wouldnt touch this bike is bcoz of the limited knowledge that our mechs will have with respect to this bike and the fact that it never came in india.

All every part will have to be imported and this is not a very popular bike even in USA so parts can be a real pain.

I am restoring my Rd400 and every time i need to get a part from USA the customs will keep it for 1 month minimum before i get it.

If you are not paying a lot for the bike. First strip it and see what all can be used and what you need to procure from USA.

After u have the complete list check the prices online [ebay] to get the approx prices that these parts are going for.

Once you have that and can estimate the total cost. then decide if you want to go ahead or not.

If you start without that list trust me you will end up spending twice the amount that your mech says that he can finish the bike in.

THe mech will want you to start the restore after u start you are at a point of no return.
choice will be either spend more and finish or loose all the money u spent.
Be careful before you step into this project.

my estimate for making the Rd400 was 1lakh and expenditure till now is 1.6L and still counting.

Have checked this bike on Sunday.
Its badly rusted at all crucial point on the chassis, the down tubes have be eaten away completely by rust. The silencers are missing due to which water and mud has made its way to the cylinders and of course engine. Asked around for parts and people were like GX400? Whats that. Cosmetically the bike isn't bad and can be restored but technically/mechanically its difficult but not impossible if there's a good amount of cash flow. So the bikes not going anywhere for now.

It needs a lot of attention. I can understand what you are feeling right now. We are on same boat.
Here at my place there is a 1935 Norton 500 standing dead with an old gentleman. I see it, touch it, feel it but can't take away with me. Not because that owner isn't selling it but even if i get it I don't have money to restore it now

I hope you get it for cheap. Try to pick it up and keep it with u for some years. Save some money till then.

          All the best.

Sorry, I lost track of this thread... Rohan B came by and had a look at it. The bike has some 48k km on it and the exhausts and some other bits are missing. According to him the frame has also rotted.... so not going ahead with it as its too much work for a guy with no experience or money

Still, in the unlikely event that there's someone who wants to fix it in my area I guess I could lend a hand and do as I'm told. Although I doubt that'd be much use given that I don't know anything and there's still a lot of parts to be procured.

I gather that this bike is pretty popular in Southeast Asia, so perhaps sourcing parts would need to be done from there, if at all...

So... in case anyone is still following this :P

I did some digging and it turns out that this bike's specs are similar to the XS 400 of the same time period. After some additional digging I found an owner's manual for an XS 400. Now all that remains is getting in touch with someone who can actually do the job.... and get a guesstimate according to what all needs to be replaced.

I probably don't have the money for this but at least I can start somewhere... money will always come sometime I guess.

Man this will be really challenging work... Think of this twice if you are going to buy this, if i where you i will not take this bike because sourcing of the parts will be a real PAIN... i don't think it will be really easy to get the parts... leave the cosmetic parts it can be overhauled in any condition, while looking at the bike pic i think the engine is also not in good shape, here's the pain starts... main concern is the parts availability, its not that easy... am not discouraging you but its reality... if it was an RD i would have said take it... but this is a different ball game altogether... Think and decide...

I don't think I have to buy it... its original owner abandoned it years ago and moved out from here. I still have to check up on how to 'legally' have it transferred to my name and all, but there would be no point in that if it can't be saved...

Came across this thread only now. Man that is a mess. This is what it's supposed to look like. Some people don't realise what they've got until its rotted away with time.
