  • [Photo Feature]: Lost in the Clouds - Once Again

The wait is over! The Lost in the Clouds series is back in 2010 after a gap of 1 year. The previous versions in 2007 and 2008 opened up a whole different perspective of the Kumaon himalayas and taking the legacy forward we have just concluded the 2010 trip, yes, again in the Kumaon Himalayas.

The team consisted of Salil, self, Nadya (hereon to be referred as The Misus) and Dixit . While The Misus and myself headed to the hills on Thursday, 5th August, Salil and Dixit joined us the day later.

    DAY 1 - 5th August - ~ 400 kms

    Delhi - Hapur Bypass - Garhmukteshwar - Moradabad Bypass - Bazpur - Kaladhungi - Nainital - Bhowali - Almorah - Kausani

An early shift at work meant I could get atleast a 7-8 hours of sleep before a day long ride, well, that was the plan. In reality I slept for less than 4 hours but thats a story for another day . A 30 second engine warm up post tying the saddle bag and we are off at sharp 5:30 am.

I was worried about encountering traffic jams in the Garhmukteshwar area due to Kawars going for their annual Sawan pilgrimage however was pleasantly surprised. The double laning of NH 24 after Hapur Bypass to Garh has advanced a bit however there are still enough construction and pot holed roads to slow you down. Post crossing the Ganges however its a rip strip! It was a cloudy morning and pleasantly cool and we were comfortably cruising at speeds between 70-90 kmph. We encountered steady drizzles from Moradabad bypass and the once we entered the State Highway leading to Kaladhungi, broken tarmac and uneven road surfaces welcomed us in all their monsoon glory. We didnot stop for breakfast or any other break (only exception was a stop to put on the rain gear) till we reached Kaladhungi. After a sumptous breakfast of Paneer Paranthas it was time to get lost in the mist and cloud on the Nainital road.

The Misus had some work in Nainital and we had to spent around half an hour while the drizzle became a sort of downpour. The rain accompanied us right till Almorah and thereby robbing us of any oppurtunity to photograph the GREEN vistas which were all around us. We stopped for tea in a small cafe after crossing the Almorah bypass and the owner of the cafe, a very nice Kumaoni gent immediately took great interest in which is probably his first mixed race couple customers. His questions were endless but knowing Kumaoni villagers for a while now, they werent meant to be offending anyone but was rather simple curosity and innocence - thats how our average hill people are!

We reached Kausani at around 4:30 pm and went straight to the same hotel where I have stayed a few earlier times. They have had a change of ownership and name and call themselves "Negi Guest House". The Himalayan peaks view facing room cost us the same Rs. 350 as in 2008 .

The rooftop restaurant of the Guest House is a great place to sip a cuppa and watch the magestic Himalayan peaks like Trishul, Devisthan, Nanda Devi, Nanda Devi East, etc. But in monsoon? Yes, of course even in the monsoon but only when you get Lost in the Clouds.

    To be contd.

Photos from Kausani on Day 1.

    Cheers,
    Shamik

Topic Approved. with a W-I-D-E grin

Bloody hell! GOOD to see a thread up for this ride, Shamik. And, that second photograph had me go ga-ga over it the moment I laid my eyes on it for the first time a couple of days back. I myself am looking forward to visit Kausani for a long time now. It's just that I am not getting the requisite offs from work, else, everything else is ready! And boy, do I need to see more photographs of Kausani, please? Three hundred and fifty rupees with that kind of view is purely out of this world.

Also kudos to Nadya for taking off with you everytime. This is what companionship and passion is all about, I feel. Cheers to BOTH of you, actually.

I KNOW it's going to be an absolute visual treat for all of us, accompanied with some superb text as usual. Bring it all on, my man!

          6th August - ~60 kms

Kausani - Baijnath - Bageshwar Valley - Kausani - Kosi river banks - Kausani

We woke up to a beautiful morning with white clouds floating around us underneath a blue sky! Magical settings indeed. This was a day for relaxation and light riding around adjacent areas trying to explore and photograph whatever we liked.

From the Guest House's rooftop cafe:

          Trishul breaks the clouds momentarily

On the way to Bageshwar valley

A waterfall on the way - My newly aquired ND filter tried for the first time. The shots are handheld.

          To be contd.

          Cheers,
          Shamik

                    August 6th - Continued

While on the way to Bageshwar Valley where the ancient Baijnath temples are located we came across a small trail leading up to a nice little temple. We decided to check it out and stopped in front of the start of the trail on the main road. A couple of hundred metres and we were in the temple of Kali Mata. After offering our prayers and photographing around for a while we left the quite place for the more bustling town of Baijnath. Having already seen the temples in our previous trip we gave them a miss this time headed further into the valley. By this time the sun was up and down in the valley it became really hot and humid. As I was photographing some farmers across the rivers (250mm IS showoff ) The Misus reminded me of the soaring mercury and we unanimously decided to rush back to the misty hills we rode down from.

In a flash, we were back in Kausani which was around 25 kms away and after a quick freshening up in the hotel, we were on the way to the banks of Kosi. We wanted to check the picturesque river bank even in 2008 however lack of time (and my laziness ) prevented that, this time The Misus had it covered . A leisurely 30 kms ride with a stop to climb a small cliff for some photographs took us to the river bank's nearest stop. You have to park the bike on the road and take a trail which will lead you to a small bridge to cross the river. Once on the otherside, you can explore quite a bit of the river bank. We took refuge on a nice stone platform where the river was calm, so we could just sit in peace soaking in the atmosphere. Well, we certainly ended up disturbing a sun basking river snake who fled to the river on our arrival and kept coming back every 10-15 mins to check if the humans are still around or not.

We had taken some snacks and water with us and spent a nice couple of hours there before the sky started turning grey - signal to head back. As soon as we started riding the rain came. We were carrying our rain suits and were saved from the deluge. Back at the hotel, we spent the rest of the afternoon chatting away and waiting for Salil and Dixit.

The fellas arrived pretty late in the afternoon almost at sun down, they apparently missed the rain and were photographing the Kosi valley, which I missed .

A nice dinner preceeded by a couple of glasses of rum and..the rest is SLEEP.

                    To be contd.

                    Cheers,
                    Shamik
