  • Expedition 'Into The Wild Himachal'

Eversince I bought my first bike the idea of fulfilling my desire to travel and explore fascinated me. I have been traveling since childhood with parents. Now it was time to explore more and more on my two wheeler. I have done numerous trips to Mussoorie, Dhanulti, Hrishikesh and once to Shimla on bike. Next thing on my mind was Leh. But luck had something else in store for me. I was suffering from Jaundice this summer and was reffered bed rest for more then a month. All my plans for leh went down with it. When I recovered from it one thing was certain in my mind that I have to go somewhere. I thought of going to spiti but this time I was delayed because of the exams. Then before diwali I decided that we will go to manali this time and thats for sure. I googled out the maps , locations , distances. To make it more adventureous I thought of going from less trodden route insted of the NH. Here kurt bhaiya helpedme a lot on deciding the route. Experience always count. Every thing was prepared. Four of us were to go on this trip. It was me Varun Bisht, Varun Pant, Harshit Agarwal, and Ashish Singh. Our pleasure rides were Apache and Stunner. So we started shoping for our trip. We bought gloves, map, puncture repair kit, foot pump, medical kit, boots for snow trekking in Rohtang Pass and other necessary stuff. It was scheduled to depart from dehradun on Nov 13,2010 at 04:00 AM in morning. Just a night before Prashant informed that he will be joining us. Now it was three bikes Apache, Stunner and Gladiator to join the race to the mountains. We woke up at 3am and departed from Dehradun at 04:40 AM for our blissful ride into the himalayas...

    Ride Plan.
    Day 1. Dehradun - Mussoorie - Yamuna Bridge - Chakrata - Tiuni - Rohru - Sungri - Narkanda. 270 Kms

There is always the other way around .Thanks for sharing the pics Varun.

@Garry:-Pillion to hills are always scary on bikes like RTR 0r 220 , as I think sitting high on the pillion while taking the hilly curves is quite annoying.
Only Royal Beast is good as its torqy & very stable for 2 in hills .And hills are the place to njoy the roads but still if u cant drop ur pillion take good care of the pillion ... Ride Safe !!!

Its not a problem and its better if even the pillion knows the riding. Famous places like manali and Nainital have great roads (neglecting few patches). RTR 180 is a nice bike even for touring.Even the hunk.

thanks rpmboy. and yes there is always another way around which always have some unknown adventure factor...

@Varun: I am especially waiting for the pictures of Rohru to show up, as that is one place which I haven't really ridden to, till date. Somehow, I've always missed it.

                            Day 1

                            Day 1: Dehradun - Chakrata - Tiuni - rohru - Sungri - Narkanda.

We all woke up at 03:00 AM did all our daily rituals and fastened our luggage on my bike. At last we were ready for our dream ride. A ride which was riding my mind since a long time. At 04:30 AM we started our ride. It was my first timer with luggage at backseat insted of a pillion. Therefore we were driving slower than usual. We moved out of our home and moved toward Mussoorie and then yamuna bridge. Just after crossing Campty Fall I looked at odometer and yelled at my self. I was so busy packing bags that I forgot to reset the tripmeter at home. I did it there and moved on. So I was around 40 kms behind on my tripmeter. Next we stoped at yamuna bridge. It was our first picturesque location as before that it was all dark.Sunrire up high in mountains making just the peaks glow with sunrays and down there was a river full of rapids. We moved toward chakrata. Now roads were getting narrower and broken. Most intrusting part about this road was that we found many divergance without any knowledge about where they will take us and still we always took the right route. This made me beleve that all lead to chakrata only. We saw an old man standing at roadside and asked direction for chakrata. With a big smile on his face he pointed uphill. Varun Pant who was driving behind us got suspicious as that old man was looking drunk. He asked where is vikasnagar and he again pointed uphill. We had a great laugh when he told us that incident. Enroute chakrata there was viratkhai which gave us a full view of the Doon valley and also snow clad mountains. It was really a beautiful place. Well we reached chakrata at 09:30 AM and we realized that we were well behind schedule. There we had breakfast in a small dhaba made of wooden floor which made a thump sound whenever anyone walks on it.

Beyond chakrata roads were worse till tiuni. Though mobile connection is really good in this part of uttarakhand. If you go to Dhanaulti or Hrishikesh you will find network problem there. There were many ancient kind of villages inroute with their own beautiful architecture. We started to drive faster as idea of reaching manali the sameday was sparking in our mind. I entered a muddy stream crossing the road at a bit higher speed and lost balance of the bike and slipped. It was a minor one and me and my bike didnt suffered any injuries. We reached Tiuni at 2:00 PM. Tiuni is a beautiful smal town. River pabbar flows along the road in opposite direction till rohru. We haddnt seen tarred roads for more then 100 kms. So a sight of roads made our heart pump more and we all revved our bikes hard. Prashant and Pant were doing 90+Kph and I was struglling at 75-80 Kps as the luggage at rear was making my bikes handle to rattle. There Varun Pant did something wrong and his stunner went off the road and then went into the air. Ashish who was his pillon rider went into air off the bike but luckly diddnt suffer major injuries. Even Varun was fine. The only point of concern was a cut mark on the rear tyre. At rohru Pabbar gets wider and more beautiful. River pabbar flows through the heart of Rohru. Fishing is a famous lisure activity there. Its a beautiful valley. After every 80 - 100 kms we have to adjust our luggage again as it tends to move sideways and cause problem in driving. We stopped around 4 times from chakrata to rohru to adjust it. There at rohru we had lunch. We were quite confused at rohru as my friends thought that we were on a wrong route. After reassuring them the route we moved towards Sungri and roads become more pethetic. Just few kms from Sungri Prashant fell from his bike while nevigating dirt roads. Even this was a minor one. At sungri we were again confused at it was 06:00 PM and we were to decide wether to move toward narkanda or stay at Sungri. After short discussion we moved toward Narkanda. It was already dark and there were no signs of civilization. To add to our days adventure stunner got a punture in middle of nowhere. We moved slowly till next village so that we can get some light to have a look at tyre. Roads were in real bad conditions and so was the tyre. There I really felt smart as I was carring puncture repear kit and a foot pump. Well I mended my first puncture In an unknown village and it was a failure. actually the crack was on the wall of the tyre and was quite large. But still it helped us a lot and we moved toward Narkanda. We reached narkanda at 09:00 PM. our first concern was accomodation. We enquired about some rooms near temple but they were out of budget. We checked a dormatory but that was quite cramped and flithy. A shopkeeper came to our rescue. He made us stay at rest house. There was a empty room(not regular guest room) there and we all 5 stayed there for rs 400/- only. That guy was owner of pinto all needs shop which was just in front of rest house. It was really nice experience with him. As we were late we didnt get any dinner there and satisfied our hunger with some bananas. After 17 hours of traveling and 15 hours of riding we were 270 kms away from Dehradun. Earlier We thought that we will do dehradun to manali in one day if we do 15 hours of ride. Evenif we dont go to manali we had a plan of enjoying nature at Narkanda or visit Hatu peak as we were supposed to reach early there. Here our paper work went in dust just because of road conditions. I even enjoied that tiring 270 kms ride because I felt I was preparing myself for a big one. But my friends were not so happy because nothing was happening according to plan. We were around 180 Kms behind schedule. When we should be in Manali we were in Narkanda. Well we went to sleep soon and that was a really a sweet one.
