Strongly agree; this is the first thing to adhere to

Excellent point & very well agreed to this.

Not paranoid, but remember that, the same knife could be used by them against you too; now that includes the old timing chain or any weapon for that matter. Best thing is to...AVOID.

Quite true; most NH's are safer.

    Adding my 2 cents...
If you intent to have dinner & stay at some place, never tell them before hand that you're staying. Pretend as though you're there for food & have a long way to go. Finish off the dinner & then stay there overnight. Also, leave the place as early as possible to have breakfast at somewhere else. Oh!!! and again, this point applies to places that are damn cheap at smaller town/villages or may even look suspicious.

best thing to do if you plan to ride alone... go to the nearest health and glow shop and buy yourself a pepper spray for 500 bucks.

Keep it in your jacket.. its way better than trying to challenge them physically... pepper spray lasts 30 minutes so plenty of time to escape

No offense.....but Id really like to see someone try it out effectively when they're facing down a goon and fumbling with it to pull out the knife and instead, out comes a nail file

Even I had the same brilliant idea for a while but all its good for, in my perhaps limited view, is cutting apples and looking cool. Also, makes for a cool keychain.

I have no experience in armed fighting except some chur chand...dodgeball. But, I feel thats a very generalised statement.....depends on the situation. Someone faced with a situation could try to scare the opposition with a weapon. But that ofcourse, depends on the opposition and the hero's 'persuasiveness'. Anyway, all that seems stupid compared to pepper spray.

Thankfully I have never had a chance to test this out :P.

hope it stays that way till you upgrade to a pocket knife. (and afterwards too)

another idea....how about carrying around a loud buzzer\horn? that could stun, confuse and scare the villains as well as give out an alert to other people around check out whats happening.

Local newspaper carried an article recently about a mobile phone controlled antitheft kit....you fit it on the vehicle, feed it your phone number and if it gets stolen, manhandled or something, it tracks the movement of the vehicle by gps and sends its location by sms to your phone....you can also activate its alarm from the phone.

In retrospect... I feel pepper spray should be our weapon of choice against these robbers. Thats the only thing amongst everything discussed that will effectively counter the threat and also help us not get on the wrong side of the law.

Simplest method: Ask the long distance trucks. They always take the safe routes

Case in point is the NH2 from Del-Kanpur. So many well meaning friends said the area is not safe & is deserted post Agra etc etc - tell you what? I've done it some 8 times now in car, driving overnight & sleeping at toll plazas/petrol pumps/punjabi dhabas.

Chennai to AP is generally safe. Expect some bad roads after AP border towards Orissa & almost all parts of Orissa. Road after Orissa towards Kolkatta is fine.

BTW, are you saying 12 AM of day1 & reach Bhubaneshwar by evening of Day 1? IMO, that will be a very stressful ride like doing 1200+ odd Kms on a single day with some bad roads in between.

I'd suggest Chennai to Vizag - Day1 & Vizag to Kolkatta - Day 2, choice is yours

Guys i would like to share my experience:
During my last ride,i was returning from shimoga to bangalore.
By the time i reached tumkur it was 1.00am.
I had another 80kms to cover.I was riding with my friend as a pillion.
After the tumkur, instead of continuing in NH-206.we saw signboards, took a byepass towards bangalore. It was about 10-15kms to reach the NH-4.
After about 5kms at midnight we spotted an autorikshaw and man waving his hand trying to stop us.Luckily i had some presence of mind and downshifted the gear and ripped past him only to find that they were a gang of muggers who were hiding behind him. From there no turning back. Reached home safely.
so i advice you guys not to take that road at night.
Even better if we don't ride at night.I have decided not to,unless it is unavoidable.
The road marked in RED is the byepass.

Will take care about it in future. Well in any case the highways are the safest roads we have.
