On 13th of jan i tried to get out of the office soon, but got stuck come how and reached home at 9 PM. Tried a lot to sleep, but could not and the same happened to Mayand and Sandip. Every body were waiting for the alarm time and called each other with out any late.

Just reached Bangalore now.. Detailed log with pics I will be posting soon.

Wheel into wayanad - day 1

      Total Kms Covered : 752Kms
      Day 1 : 352 Kms

Finally at 1.30 AM I gave a wakeup call to Mayand and Sandip. Planned to meet up at 2.30 AM at RV College. I reset my trip meter and started 2.00 AM to pick Sandip from Corporation circle. By 2.25 AM I reached at the meeting point and in no time Mayand too joined us. We took some time to lube our chain and finally started at around 2.50 AM to the next destination.

It was dark, but HID made my ride easy. Near to the Kamath HP Bunk We fill our fuel tank. At around 4.30 AM we reached Maddur and by that time we were feeling so hungry. The whole night we did not sleep, so the tummy was sad too. We had chicken sandwich and dark coffee to get us some better feeling. Till Mysore, it was a nice ride after that. It was 5.30 AM, we reached Mysore. We took the inside city route via the palace to reach Ooty road.

      Just before entering Mysore.

      In front of Mysore palace.

It was the Ooty route, we took. Initially we found some bad patch, but after that it the road was quite good. After a nice ride of one and half hours, we finally reached Gundelpet and had out breakfast too. Instead of taking the Ooty route further, we took the right turn to get in to Kerela.

      One big lake just before.Nanjangudu.

      Some pose with bike.

      Calicut/ Ooty route.

      Entering Gunndelpet/ Gundlupet.

After Gundelpet the road was good and there was hardly any traffic. At around we reached Maddur and from there the sanctuary got started. After some time we wheeled in to Kerala i.e. Wayanad district. While crossing the sanctuary, we could only see some dears and monkeys. There was some bad patch in that sanctuary route. Overall it was a nice experience. It is not allowed to park the vehicle inside the sanctuary, but we broke the rule to click some pictures. All the other vehicle tried their best to confirm, that we were not having any problem. So it is not safe to park there as wild animals use to cross the road and some time may attack.

      Just entered Kerela.

      Some information about Wayanad district.

At around 11 AM we reached Sulthan Bathery and took the left turn to Edakkal Caves which is 12 KM from Sultan Bathery. It was a mix of good and bad road. But the biggest dismantlement after reaching there as the caves are closed for this month and will open some time in feb. Ohh god it was a waste of fuel and time; starting was bad. With no option, we came back to Sulthan Bathery and headed towards Kalpetta. Three KM before Kalpeta I saw a hotel and suggested to try for accommodation. I made a plan, Mayand well executed that and we got the accommodation with discounted price as we proved ourself as students and doing south India ride. We had to pay 1250 INR for three people per day. Room was good as compared to that price. It was 12.30 PM we checked in to the Hotel.

Some off road on the way to Edekkal Caves.

On the way back from Edekkal Caves.

Kerela style lunch. I felt in love with this.

      Our Hotel from outside.

      our room accommodation

After check in to the hotel we took a good cold water bath followed by a good Kerela lunch. It was INR 70 with a piece of fish. It was a mouth watering settlement after a long ride. With out any further delay, we started for the rest off the things to complete. Pookote lake is just 14 KM from Kalpeta. We took the Calicut road till Vythiri followed by a right diversion from there. Paid INR 5 for parking, INR 10 per head for ticket. Took a boat ride for INR 50 for 20 minutes. It was fun riding the pedal boat after a long time.

      On the way to Vythiri.

      Vythiri town.

From Vythiti the inside road to Pookote lake.

      Pookote lake

It was 5 PM we started towards Calicut to visit Chain tree and Western Ghat View Point. One can get the real feeling of western ghat here. Chain tree is just a normal tree with a iron chain and some holy spirit story behind it. But I found it difficult to relate everything.

One the way back from Pookote Lake. Actually road to lake is very near to Highway. As the road was cut, we had to take the longer route.

On the way to view point.

      View point.

      Ohh the great photographers.

Tempting us to ride till Calicut.

We relaxed ourself for half an hour and finally started back to Kalpetta. On the way we visited the chain tree. By that time, we were hungry so stopped on the way to have some food. This time it was paper chicken and parotha.

The hotel where we had paper chicken and parotha.

After having a great food followed by a nice tea, we started for the hotel. As it was dark, we took some more time to reach hotel. Then after dinner at the hotel we went to sleep. As lot of people from Kerela works in middle east, some of the middle east food also available. Alarm set for 5.45 AM. Plan was to get out of the hotel by 6.30 AM.
Please use all possible safety measures while riding and remember others also riding on the same road...

edakkal caves were closed due to 'maintenance work'. The trekking there was awesome but they've stopped it for over a year now.
meenmutty falls is the only sort of hiking now. if you go there you probably wouldn't have had any energy to walk a km at kuruva

6 AM outside of the hotel.

7 AM out side of the hotel.

We headed toward Kalpetta till Chundale and took the left diversion to Ooty route via Mappedi. There was a big sign board about all the places on that way. The sign boards are every where there, so can not be lost, even if the he/ she wants. One thing I noticed here, tender coconut is not available this part of the Kerela. People in Kerala are very good and helpful. They never cheat anybody and never expect for any tips. I was fully satisfied with the treatment. At around 7.30 AM, we entered the Ooty route.

                        On the way to Kalpetta.

Sun finally put some effort to wake up.

                        Fog all over the area.

Thanks to Sandip for this pic.

Finally we stopped here to capture the lazy sun.

                        My bike started posing now.

Now it is my time to pose.

                        Now Mayand and Me.

After this photo session we started again towards Mappedi and found one place to have some tea. Tried a lot to get a place to settle down the stomach, but no luck. At arround 8.15 AM we reached Mapeddi and after some enquary, we took a right diversion to reach Cembra Peak which is 5 Km from there. The road from Chundale to Mapeddi is full of tea estates both side of the road. It was a nice feeling to ride there.

On the way to Mapeddi. Both side of the road full of tea estates.

Place where we had out tea.

The inside road from Mapeddi to Chembra Peak was so narrow and was not in a good condition. That road took us to some altitude and finally we reached the Chembra Forest Check Post. The road was full of greenery. On the way we stopped and took some pictures and also asked one kid to take some snaps in group.

                        Posing time for the bike.

                        Sandip did this.

At around 9 AM, we reached the check post and came to know that we can go for a full day trek till the peak or we can settle down for a half day trek till the heart shaped lake. As we had to cover other things too, we decided for the half day trek. In both the condition, we had to take a guide. We paid INR 500 for the guide at the check post and INR 100 extra for the plastic water bottle, which will be refund on return if we an able to produce the bottle. As per the guide, we had to ride an other 5 KM to reach an other check post where we have to park the bike. The road was very narrow and was in a very bad condition. I took the guide as pillion till the parking point. I struggled a lot to get my bike there as I was loosing the rear tire grip every time. The whole stretch I had to ride in first and second gear. finally at 9.45 AM, we reached the parking place.

There was a sign board for hospital, but the nearest hospital is at Mapeddi.

This is our guide Srinoj. I asked him, what you say "what is your name?" in malayalam. He answered "Srinoj only. in english and tamil also same Srinoj".

At the parking itself, we removed all our riding gears and put all inside the bag. I felt some relief as I could able to manage my textile riding jacket to my bad. At the check post, the forest guard completely checked out bags. Apart from tea, we also see log of pepper trees around in wayanad. Next we headed towards the view tower, from where we gotta trek in to the forest.

Now it is time for me to pose.

Way to the last check post.

When we reached the view point tower, an other guard checked us and asked for the camera pass. I told Srinoj, we are students and already paid INR 500. Some how Srinoj convinced the guard. After some photography, we started for the trek. And there was no road after that, only there was foot marks, we have to follow. The path was so narrow covered with big grass and bushes. We heard about snakes there and one snake crossed in front our guide. The guide panicked and jumped over me shouting about the snake. But mean time he told that was a normal snake and already crossed. I checked the area and on my left about two meters from me I saw two well matured Vipers, headed to wards us. I tried to take some snaps, but felt risky and quickly escaped from there. That was the first time I saw the Vipers out of cage. In the mean time we were totally tired and used to take rest time to time at different places. We ran out of water, but luckily we encountered a small stream to fill the water. After some one hour trek we reached around 1100 meters above the sea level and there was only big grasses. I got relaxed thinking that at higher altitude three is a less chance of snakes. On the way we had enough photography and finally we reached to the lake point. Srinoj took us to a point where we could able to take some good pictures of the heart shaped lake.

By the time we reached there Sandip got fully exhausted.

We parked our vehicle down there.

Posing time. Thanks to Srinoj for this.

I was trying to give some Lakshya pose.

                        Finally the heart shaped lake.

This is the peak for the full day trek.

It was almost ice water in side the lake.

Trying to give relief to our leg.

Trying to lock the GPS. Wanted to know the altitude.

                        Finally the GPS got locked.

We had not have out breakfast that day and the tummy was just shouting, some how make out tummy understand with the snacks we had taken with us. We relaxed at that place for some time and finally started to trek down. On the way down we did not see any snakes, but saw some beautiful girls along with some other tourists climbing to the lake point. At that time it was quite warm and we could able to see their situation. We could able to discourage some tourists too. Suddenly Sandip lost control and fell down. He rolled 5 -6 feet down and hurt his leg. After that till the check post, he host his control 4 - 5 times,, but luckily nothing happened. Some how he could manage himself till the parking place. We quickly geared up ourself and started towards last forest check post to drop Srinoj there.

                        The Chembra Peak forest office.

I did some enquary about the lunch with Srinoj and had been suggested for Hotel New Paris at Mappedi. Said a by to Srinoj and headed towards Mapeddi. After some local enquary, we finally reached the Hotel New Paris at around 1.00 PM. As like the previous day we preferred to take the traditional meal with a fish fry. The cost of the meal was INR 30 and fish was INR 40 and I must tell I was a perfect value for money. After this tummy full settlement, we started for the Soochippara lake.

Check out for the rice spelling here. Next time you come Kerela and order something, keep this in mind.

                        Day 2 lunch.

The dry fish shop. Before taking this shot, I asked for the permission and he literally posed for this with a news paper.

Right after the lunch, we started for the Soochippara Waterfall. Most part of the road was good, but last few kms the road was too bad. But the road side view with the green tea estate was awesome. After few struggle with the off road, finally at around 4 PM, we reached at Soochippara Waterfall. Paid INR 10 for each bike, INR 20 per head for visiting ticket and INR 25 for one camera. At the gate they checked and we had to pay an other INR 25. It was around 1 Km from the parking place till the waterfall. After reaching the waterfall place, we got disappointed and hardly took one or two pictures. As it was full of crowd, we decided to move.

At around 5 PM, we started from there. Took some time to shot some road side pictures and finally at around 6.15 PM we reached Chundale via Mapeddi. Just after Chundale we could able to stop one place for tea.

                        Posing time for the bike.

Thanks to Sandip for this photo.

Till now this is the best sunset photo I captured.
On the way back Mayand and Sandip wanted to have body massage so stopped at the chembra heritage. It was around 9 PM, every thing over there. After having a cup of tea we started for Kalpetta. As it was late, decided to have the dinner at New Hotel at Kalpetta. Had some traditional Kerela food like Appam and Pootu. After having the dinner we started again and reached hotel at around 1.45 PM.

The place where we had our tea.

                              Pootu.

After the tea, we started towards Panamaram. We took the left diversion from there to Koyileri. Thought of filling some fuel there, but did not get any petrol bunk other than Indian Oil. Took the right diversion toward Kuruva from Koyileri. Bang!! now the off road started.. Road from here till Kuruva island was so bad. We struggled a lot and finally at around 8.45 AM, we reached there. We had 15 min and we could manage to find a hotel for breakfast. The break fast was thick dosa with samber and INR 7 each. We paid some INR 5 per bike for parking and INR 10 per head for boating. Once you get inside again we paid some INR 10 per head for visiting and INR 25 for camera. The whole area was full of bamboo trees.. And seriously I could not able to recognize a single island.. We walked some two Kms and found same kind of things every where. As Sandip had a injury, we decided not to get in side more, so returned from there. It was around 11 AM, we finished with Kuruva island.

                              Ohh the road.

                              Way to Kuruva.

Hotel Sree Durga, where we had our breakfast.

                              Dosa and samber.

                              Kitchen of that hotel

                              Inside the hotel

After some local enquary, we started to wards Bavali and the road was very bad for around 4-5 Kms. After that we had some good road till Bavali. And the thick forest get started from Bavali. We saw numbers of boards about the wild life, but could not able to see any thing in the forest, may be if you come early in the morning, you may see some. The particular road use to be open only for day time. The road inside the sanctuary was good. After a good ride inside the sanctuary, we found another bad stretch of around 5 Kms. From this point till Heggadadevakote, the road condition was very bad. After HD kote till Mysore the road was good. It was a nice experience riding those off roads. It was painful, but enjoyed those stretches. It was around 1.30 PM, we reached at Heggadadevakote. By that time we were so hungry and luckily found a place to settle down out stomach.

Off road on the way to Bavali.

After the off road some good road till Bavali.

Right is Kuruva Island and left is the road to Bavali. We just came from the right road after a hectic off roading.

Entered the Bavali Sanctuarry. This forest is quite thick as compared to Muthanga from where we got in to wayanad on day 1.

                              some good road

Tree house in sanctuary. Villagers created for safety purpose.

Did not found any animal in forest, but got one elephant

                              Some bad patch.

                              Kabini Reservoir behind.

Hotel Keralapura. "Hindu Military Hotel". We asked the reason behind such a strange name to the hotel boy and we came to know the fact that, "Military Hotel" means you can get only non veg, no veg items at all. And "Hindu Military Hotel" means you can get only non veg items, but no beef..

Chicken, rice and gravy at just INR 225 for three people.

We had a tummy full lunch there and we started feeling sleepy after that. So decided to ride slowly. At around 4 we reached Mysore, took the outer road to connect the Mysore - Bangalore road. It was a boring ride till Bangalore. Cars and cabs were busy with F1 racing most of the time. We reached Kengery at around 6.30 PM and took the nice road to reach Bannerghatta. Said bye to Mayand and dropped Sandip at home. Finally 8.30 PM I reached home. It was a nice experience riding some part of Kerela. Now I can conclude it's god's own country.
Please use all possible safety measures while riding and remember others also riding on the same road...
