  • A quick ride from Manali to Leh and back - need suggestions

    Hello all,

I am a newbie motorcyclist with 12000 on the odometer. It's been my greatest wish to fly to Delhi, take a bus to manali, rent an RE there and ride to Leh and then ride back to manali. Finally the Dad has given me the go-ahead, and I'm thinking of doing it this June end/ July 1st week when my college breaks for the semester.

I am a 19 year old student of mechanical engineering, live in Bangalore and have owned both the yamaha R15 and the FZ16 til now. So basically I only have experience on these two bikes. I have never ridden an RE in my life.

    My history as a tourer:

1.) Bangalore - Bandipur - Bangalore (516km) in one day with a pillion. It was more of a shootout than a tour.

2.) Bangalore - Mangalore - Puttur - Kukke (and climbed the Kumara Parvata there) and back to Bangalore in 3 days, alone.

3.) Bangalore - Ooty - Bangalore with pillion.

    And that's about it.

As a mechanic, I change my bike's engine oil, lubricate the throttle cable, clutch wire, know how to repair a puncture etc so I am a very inexperienced mechanic. I'm keen on learning how to completely disassemble a bike and put it back again, so maybe I'll start working as an apprentice to a mechanic one of these days, but I'm digressing at that.

Now I come to the important point: would any of you be interested to join me? Or is there a small expedition headed that way already in that time period which I may join?

    Cheers.

Take your own bike, preferably the FZ and don't rent one from Manali. I say this because you are traveling to an unfamiliar territory with an unfamiliar bike. It would be better to at least have a familiar bike. Moreover, you have not ridden an RE, ever and you wish to take a rented one to leh.

Bad idea, transport your FZ to Ambala/Kalka via train

I had considered that, but won't they damage it while transporting it by train? And secondly, i'd have to ride back to manali from Leh to bring back the FZ. If i could overcome these difficulties I'd be more than happy to take my own bike.

You know more than the 99.99% of riders on that route. Just chill and take your FZ

If you are worried about the damage, then I should let you know that cosmetic damage could be more on Manali - Leh then those fellows on the train could cause to your bike.

Start from say chandigarh/kalka. You'll have an idea of riding on hills till Manali. Then do manali -leh and return via srinagar, back to chandigarh.
