  • Help needed, Mumbai-Mangalore bike ride

Finally, after many short rides (200-500 kms), i believe i am fit for a long ride. !

So, here it is. I would be riding to Mangalore, on 22nd April early morning at around 2am and planning to reach the same day.

I need some assistance with the road conditions, pit stops etc.
Things to carry during the trip, also things not to do during the trip.
And i guess, the only route NH17, (kochi-Panvel rd), please correct me if i am wrong.

    Thanks guys!

Dont do NH17, its tiring for a first time

Rather do NH4 untill dharwad, its relatively easier...
      Mumbai > Pune > Satara > Kolhapur > Dharwad > Hubli > Yellapur > Ankola > Udupi > Surathkal > Mangalore!!!

      Do's
      - Try fuel up as much as possible in Maharshtra
      - Dont wait till the tank dries up, try timing your break at the fuel pumps
      - Take enough breaks!
      - Drink a lot of water!
      - Carry Sugar candies (Personally they keep me awake, and also gives me energy!)
      - All the KSRTC busses are ex video gamers, and running down a biker is bonus points to them! So avoid them as a rule!
      - Do not speed, especially in Ktak
      - Do not think that stopping and sleeping for a bit would be a bad idea, stop, take a nap (in a fuel bunk or dhaba)
      -Travel light,
      - Its your duty to be visible to everyone on the road!

      Road conditions:
Last I went was a while back, but NH4 is a bliss, NH17 has beautifull surroundings and hence is challenging, more so due to the streches of work in progress roads everywhere around.

      Have a good trip!

^^^^+1.Considering the time you wanna make the ride (APRIL) you will be baked if you take NH4 and fried if you take NH17

NH4 is butter smooth till dharwad,110 -125 easily doable. Ask yourself one question: "DO I HAVE TO DO THIS IN PEAK SUMMER??????"

Carry truck loads of dehydrates if you want to do this route. It drains the water in your body by the hours that you are on wheels.

+1 Satyen ji , there is only one tactic to tackle this KSRTC drivers, as soon as you get some gruelling noice of metal box rolling over a long distance, beware a "Karnataka Sarige" bus is just speeding behind .

More over , I guess the road from ankola-->bhatkal-->kundapura-->udupi was in a very bad state last time I went(though , I had been on a bus I could feel the bumps say 1 time in every 3 seconds ) So , suggest that you break up your journey either at hubli or ankola(if you are comfy) and try to do this part in next day cause I am sure the heat tolling on you plus the KSRTC magenta's and the dehydrating factor is gonna cost you a lot of calories

          Ride Safe,
          Pai

P.S There is one more route to mangalore ,though I had suggested to incubus last time its been said that its a sort of danger cause of the naxal infections. But only during the nights. So if you plan to do it in day , you can also try

          Mumbai-->Hubli -->Shimoga-->Agumbe-->Hebri-->Manipal-->Udupi-->Mangalore

          or

Mumbai-->Hubli -->Shimoga-->Agumbe-->Hebri-->Karkala(famous gomateshwara statue you can visit)-->Moodbidri(1000 pillar basti)-->Kaikamba-->Mangalore(Dont miss liquid lounge and ghee roast at anupamas' )

Roads are in better state and the best part is, its very very scenic due the ghats and the roads are under the shades of thick forests. So you are also saved by the sun. But forests start only after shimoga

Few days ago I had been through this route. It is in superb condition but I must say that this is most boring road of all. In the start you will enjoy the ride for say 1-2 hours, but later on its very boring. You will find 100-110 kmph is still insufficient. same things you will see every where. Better thing would be to take half NH17 and half NH4 so that you can enjoy both routes. May be you can change it in Goa.

              Please wear all your guards.
Carry Glucon D and have it instead of water. It helps a lot.
Wear balaclava, else your face will get tanned.
              Wear full face helmet.
              Wear comfortable cloths.

              All the best. Ride safe.

If you need highways then take

Mumbai-->Kolhapur-->Hubli-->Bangalore(Here ther is an exit for mysore road I guess NICE road exit, please enquire properly about it )-->Mysore

                  But more scenic would be

Mumbai-->Kolhapur-->Hubli-->Shimoga-->Chikmagalur(Lots of places you can cover on the way )-->Hassan-->Mysore

But no highways after hubli , and it wud take around 2 dayz i.e a night halt at either shimoga or chikmagalor..
