  • bangalore to ooty ride

    31 jan11 - 2 feb11

    abhishek- pulsar 220
    shailendra-pulsar 220
    sandeep (pillion/back up rider)

i had just arrived bangalore on 26th jan after spending 2 long months in my native village.(away from my bike ,5 hrs electricity a day,no TV no comp), and abhishek's semester exams had just got over.

just like birds let out of cage after long captivity , we too wanted to "fly" but had no clue WHERE !! ..as we had been to all the near by destinations.after some discussion ooty was finalised.(photo results in google search were attractive enough)

we decided to leave bangalore on 31st afternoon and cross bandipur forest before 8pm.

finally the day came for which we 3 had been waiting for jan the 31st

filled up only 8litres of fuel .. (petrol is cheaper in tamil nadu by 3 rs )

    abhishek on his 220

near a lake on the way to kanakpura.

after kanakpura ,there were sugarcanes kept in bundles along roadside (probably for transportation),i flicked some and chewed as sandeep rode my bike

we were 3 hours late and we knew that we cant cross bandipur forest the same evening , so we cruised all the way to chamrajnagar and had dinner. the roads after chamrajnagar were not good enough to ride at night, so we decided to halt at a petrol bunk for few hours and get some sleep.

it was too cold (we wer'nt prepared for it ), but we survived the night with our jackets and some bedsheets and few bottles of kingfisher strng

i got up at 4:30am , woke up sandeep and abhishek (he snored like a big fat bear the whole night).did our morning "business"at the bunk.

after getting some good sleep we all were refreshed and all set for the ride.we left the petrol bunk at 5:30am

riding through bandipur forest was a nice experience , wild animals grazing near the road and riding so close to them was something we never did before.

AN HP BEND IN NILGIRIS SECTION

that was an awesome feeling,at the top of nilgiris

    tea gardens

filled up 7 litres of fuel in ooty and we decided to visit conoor(20kms from ooty) ,as it is also a tourist attraction , i had no idea that wellington was on the way to conoor

we stopped for 10 mins ,analysed our plan again ,i called up dad and gave updates about our location ,and we continued with the trip.

    toy train at cunoor station

we decided to cross bandipur before sunset ,so that we dont have to wait for another day.we rode as much we could before sunset and also kept looking for some good restaurant (had found one with bar attached , but abhishek dint like the drunk crowd and walls were covered with kingfisher posters, i left that place with a heavy heart ).

most of the dhabas and hotels charged as if they had gold cutlery and actresses serving food !!! , 40 kms before mysore there was PRINCE dhaba where prices were reasonable.they had 4-5 small huts ,all decorated with diwali lights ( i couldnt have thought of a better place at that moment) the food was delicious

on the way sandeep's mom kept scolding him over the phone ,as this was his 1st ride and we were far from bangalore. after hearing his mom scolding him ,i cudnt think of stopping for a break or power nap .

as we reached bangalore outskirts , my bike came in reserve at 702kms 702/(8+7)litres=46.8kmpl
we reached bangalore at 6 am.

my eyes watered for 10mins when i reached back(because of continous exposure to wind ) .
AND THEN I SLEPT FOR SOME 14 HOURS , GOT UP AT DINNER TIME

          Nice ride there buddy,
I've ridden that route many, many times and still enjoy it, especially the Bandipur/Mudumalai part and the hairpin climb. At just 300k.m its such a short ride while getting to enjoy the cool weather.
Next time do try and make an overnight stay at one of the Mudumalai jungle lodges if you have the time. I'm sure you'll love it.

          Take Care & Ride Safe,
          Cheers
