  • [Photo Feature]: A short trip to manali and back.

    Hey guys

Have been a silent member of this community for a while and have been reading the various trip logs in this forum.
Finally i decided to pen down my trip to Manali with my cousin Varun in MAY 2010. Yes May 2010...was rather busy to pen down a log and post.
    So here it comes now.......

        Delhi

        L

It all started with just a thought and an urge deep down inside of me to satisfy my hunger for touring and vacation (badly needed one). 2010 started in a good note but eventually I became busier as the year started to move ahead.

        Wednesday 5 May 2010

Went to office and came back by 5 pm. Varun had taken care of all the packing stuff and tying the backpack to the bike. We left Delhi around 6pm with me riding initially. This time being rush hour in Delhi we somehow managed to make our way quickly out of Delhi and started cruising on NH-1. We maintained speeds of around 80-90 kmph as it started to go dark. I rode till Karnal and after that Varun took to riding. Everything was going smooth till we hit a pothole which suddenly came from nowhere at around 80 kmph. We stopped to check the bike but everything was just fine. However the same was not true for me as the jerk took its toll on my back. I did feel a little pain but due to the excitement it seemed nothing. We reached Ambala at around 9:30 pm where we were supposed to stay at our aunts place. I put some ointment on my back and hit the sack only to get up at midnight with pain in my back. My aunt came to my rescue and with some DESI technique of heat therapy with hot sand I got relief from the pain.

        Thursday 6 May 2010

I got up fresh in the morning with my beck feeling better, but there lies the biggest question-To continue or to stop and take rest for a day and head back to Delhi.
Varun was in no mood to go further as planned for he was concerned about my back. But I had other plans in my head; the urge for the trip was far greater that the back pain and I persuaded Varun to continue with the trip. Being a year younger to me he had no options but to listen to me J.

FZs rear seat being cramped was a matter of concern but was not proving to be too much as we were riding in turns. We stopped at Mandi to have brunch. Freshen ourselves and ordered for sandwiches/maggi and tea.

Reached Manali around 2:30 pm and as soon as we entered manali and slowed down a bit, suddenly many people started trailing us. For a matter of a second I was confused for what had happened. Then I realized that these guys are agents from various hotels in Manali.

Went to the Mall road to bless our stomach and landed up in a cheap dhaba right at the mall road junction. Had tandoori chicken and dal cooked in butter. After this sumptuous food we discussed and left for Solang Valley. We reached there as the darkness approached so had nothing to do. While our journey back we went to Vashisht and had some coffee and cakes at a bakery there. It was a full moon night and the hills were looking charismatic. Stayed there for a while and returned to the hotel to call it a day.

        Friday 7 May 2010

The day started at 5am with me getting up as usual and pestering Varun to sneak out of bed and get ready. We got freshed up and decided to go for a nature walk. The sun lay in front of us like a HID headlight, blinding us. The snow clad mountains reflected the sunrays and shined like gold- a mesmerizing sight.
We walked the stairs starting right after our hotel unaware of where it will lead us to. Eventually the stairs took us to Hadimba temple. Visited the temple and surroundings.
Came back to the hotel in around 15-20 mins and decided to go for a shave to the nearest barber shop. Hunted for a barber shop and luckily found one not very far away from the hotel. While shaving, the barber told us that if we leave early for rohtang we will escape the heavy traffic of tourist vehicles approaching there. Just an eye contact with Varun and both of us knew what we were supposed to do.
As soon as we came out from the barbers shop, 7 am to be precise we started to move towards rohtang, meanwhile forgetting to take our helmets, rucksack etc etc (big mistake). There were only three of us, Me-Varun and FZ.
To our hardluck the road to rohtang was closed due to heavy snowfall. We only managed to go till Mani. But the better part was that when we reached Mani there were hardly any tourists around. The road was covered with snow on both sides and as this was the first time I was experiencing snow I was amazed. Varun felt chilly and bought a muffler to cover his face. Due to the lack of helmet both of us had to cover our faces with woolen mufflers (Damn we looked like terrorists). Stayed at mani for around 3-hours and came back to Manali as we could not go any further. Rest of the day was spent exploring Manali.

        Sunday 9 May 2010

Got up early and started our journey back home. We were in Delhi in 3 hours flat.

This journey had a lasting impact on my life and resulted in renting a bike to venture around on my honeymoon in Himachal Pradesh. Shall post this log later.

        Keep riding!!!!!

Also 500 for 1 night is not a bad deal at all. May be cuz it wasnt peak season at that time.
