    Day 3 - Coimbatore – Palani – Thekkady

Woke up around 6.30am, cleaned my bike and myselfJ, saddled up my bags and by 8 am was on the road towards thekkady. Tanked up in the nearest bunk, so that I wouldn’t have to waste time enroute and took a while to negotiate the Coimbatore traffic and reach the SH. Roads were a bliss after this, and i have been lucky to have good roads to ride, which wasn't expected by me. Had a friend in udmalaipet tried to reach him and came to know that he is on his way back to ChennaiJ. My next stop was near palani to have some lime juice to keep me cool, and moved on. I skipped lunch and filled myself with chocolates and Juices on the way and reached Periyakulam. Heard from one of my friend about Aghamalai and kumbakarrai Falls. Route to the falls was awesome with forest on both the sides and no people around, had fun riding. But the falls wasn’t that worth the visit – was just like tada falls with less water and more quarterJ. So returned back to find out the way for Aghamalai, but got confused with the directions from the locals and I was out of periyakulamJ. I was in no position to try again, so started ahead to thekkady itself.

Reached Thekkady by 4.45pm and checked for the tickets which were available for the entry but no boat ride. Meanwhile a local guyz asked me whether I wanted a place to stay, I nodded yes and next time minute I was in a neat double bed room with my own balcony for Rs.500, right next to the entry gate. After settling up my luggage and all, I went to get the entry ticket, thinking I can try taking pictures by sunset by I was 5 minutes late and they said no tickets. Enquired for the next day, morning 5.30am tickets will be given and the first boat ride for 2hrs will start by 7.30am – which was my target. With target being set and whole evening in my hand, I tried to explore the places around by walk. Took a refreshing bath and walked to the nearby ground where the traditional kalaripiattu show was being held. 1 hour show costed 150 bucks and it was worth the visit. Really admire the stunts performed by them and how they try to conserve their tradition. Once after their show, the audiences were allowed to enter their arena and pose with their weapons. Even I opted for a single photo, but the guys were very much eager to click and asked me to pose in different ways with couple of weapons J which I liked. Way backed I strolled down leisurely, had my dinner in a local restaurant – one thing got to be mentioned here is that for non-veg people its heaven even in the small restaurants. Also one more thing I find different here is that I found lot of foreigners. On my way back to room, tired some street + night photography, only couple of them came out well. Reached room and slept soon so that I can get by 5.30am to get my entry tickets.

                            Day 5 – Idukki – Munnar

Woke up by 6am, to get some sunrise shots from Kalvery mount. In hurry I forgot to wear the jacket liner and the early morning fog chilled my bonesJ through the mesh. It was a chilly ride to the mount and a bit of off roading reached a point after which the track uphill was blocked a big boulder of rock. I was mesmerized with the view I got from there even though I didn’t reach the top. Whole cherithony town was in fog and I started to capture them through canon lens. Spent some half-an-hour to capture some proper sunrise shots as fog were playing spoilsport. Now comes the descending part from the top. In excitement, I didn’t notice the small gravels in the travel while doing uphill, now with 45 degree decline and loose gravel in the track; it was one hell of task ahead for me to come down. With engine off and using clutch and brakes I managed to reach a safe place from where I can do some off roading to the main road. Felt somewhat had accomplished a featJ. Now wanted to check out the Idukki dam, but as I reached the reachable end of the dam, I couldn’t see anything except for fog. So rode back to reach the Arch dam bottom to try my luck. The view was good enough with very low light due to fog. There was a single house near the entry gate, I suppose it’s of the guard/security. Enquired with him whether, I walk inside and click couple of snaps – as photography is restricted. He said u can go ahead since, he is a local tribe guy and said even he can arrange my entry to walk on the dams, but I wasn’t interested. Clicked couple of snaps and rode back to room.

Was able to ride up till there after that there is no way:

Tried to click Dam from top but it was foggy all around

With only Munnar at a 2 hours distance, I decided to start by 9am so that I can be in the hotel by check-in time. Once had a wonderful breakfast of Aapam and Fish curry, started to Munnar with a happy stomach. Ride to munnar was a pleasant one as by this time I have been riding in the ghats and among tea estates for 2 days. Stopped for few snaps enroute and in the view point for some pictures, and reached Munnar by 12.30pm. Checking with the local auto stand for the Sujatha Inn, reached there in next couple of minutes. Seeing me coming in, the security mentioned sir, park your park your bike in this side so that all the bikes can be parked properly. Informed him that am early than others and all will be coming after another 3 hours so no need to worry for now. Checked in the room and got refreshed, that’s when I reach couple of bikes stopping in. It was Deepak and Phanikar, they had rode from Coimbatore, so they reached early than others. I knew Deepak as I had met him earlier in Coimbatore in Day 1 of my ride, so exchanged hi’s with Phanikar and they started to settled down. Once they got refreshed, we were discussing about my ride and whereabouts of riders from Chennai, Bangalore, and kerala. It was past 2pm and our stomachs gave us the growl for food. The housekeeper of the hotel gave us a suggestion of a non-veg hotel nearby but when we reached the tables were full, so we walked few more distance to a smaller hotel and satisfied my hunger with basmati meals as the ordinary meals have the big rice, and Deepak and phanikar settled with Veg and chicken briyani respectively. Meanwhile I received a call from sriram stating that the group from Chennai is neat the ghat entrance checkpost. I asked them to start so that I can meet him up somewhere on the way. I geared up and after the directions from the local for the route since I took the opposite route to munnar, rode down to meet the Chennai group and clicking enroute, with my calculation I got to meet them some 15km into my ride but still didn’t meet them so stopped by the next corner were few shops were there and checked on my route whether its correct. With a affirmative answer I decided to stay there itself as I can see upto few bends of the road. Soon I saw the flash of ninja’s and followed by other riders. Exchanged high-fives, they wanted to have a break for fag and tea, I advised them that we proceed further to the view point which is much safer as the road were broad enough to park the bikes in the side.

We reached the view point, the ninja riders of the bike to give a break for their bums – since it had been a hard ride for them in the Ghats with bad roads. All arrived but Sriram, Tarun and Padmanaban were missing. Soon Tarun came and sriram followed him, and after a long gap came our man Padmanaban for a standing ovationJ. After the break, I led the group to the hotel and by the time Kerala guys too have reached. It was time to settle down and catch up others on the ride experience. Time flew like that and the discussions were on here and there; soon Apar and Praveen joined us and then the Bangalore guys arrived and the usual catching up with the guys happened with whom I have met during the last tri-state meet up. It took a while before all settled in the rooms as there was a bit of confusion which was nicely handled by the respective city leads with the help of the riders itself.

Tea break to refresh from the ride

During our discussions, we realized that the place where we were staying has a pure-veg restaurant; which was a shocker. Later we came to know that there is another hotel of the same group where the dinner will be prepared and served to us here in a hall kind of room which they had. With next day to explore the munnar, we all gathered in sunny’s room and were chatting over the ride, routes,… with some spirits to handle the cold and some tasty hot dinner everyone was busy in the dinner hall. After dinner, few discussions were happening in the dinner hall, few in the parking lot – discussions went on late in the night and with top-station as destination the next morning we decided to get sleep for a fresh ride tomorrow morning.
