Day 1
Day 1 - Mumbai to chiplun
I had been planning a 4 day trip ever since i found out that 19th august was a holiday. the plans kept changing and we finally decided on karnataka. I had chalked out the initial plan, and over the next few days we kept making alterations to it, only to finalize it a day before the ride. We decided to leave on Wednesday evening and ride to chiplun at night, just to get a head start on the long ride to karnataka the next day. I had packed my bags the previous day itself, and went to work on Wednesday but couldn't concentrate much. At 4pm, the time to leave had finally arrived. I rushed home, grabbed my bags and left for what would be one my best rides so far. The weather however was playing spoiltsport. there were heavy rains over the last couple of days, and just as i left my place it started to pour. I got drenched within the first few minutes itself, but still continued towards vashi.
I reached vashi at 6pm and met up with Om and we continued riding towards vadkhal naka. The rains showed no sign of slowing down and neither did we. We reached vadkhal naka at 7:30pm, and stopped to fill our empty stomachs. After a couple of plates of omlettes, burjhi, and some tea, we were fueled up for the 200 km night ride in the rain. NH17 was in a pretty bad shape, there were lots of hard to spot water filled potholes because of the incessant rain. Luckily for us, the rain stopped somewhere near mahad and the roads were starting to dry up. The sky also cleared up and we had a nice full moon to guide us through kashedi ghat. it was nearing 11pm now, so we decided to pick up some packets of chips in case we got hungry later. We finally reached chiplun at 12am and stayed at Om's relatives house.

day 2
Day 2 - Chiplun to honnavar
The plan for today was to ride to jog falls. We checked the map and found that there is a narrow steep hilly road that leads up to jog falls, which we wanted to cover when there was ample daylight left and which probably wouldn't have had much accommodation for the night. On seeing that, we decided to ride to the town of Honnavar instead, which is at the base of the falls, 60 kms before the falls.
We were up by 7am, and started the ride at 8am. The weather today seemed good, there was no rain, just an overcast sky. Our plan was to reach goa by lunch time, have a nice lunch there and then continue to karnataka. NH17 was at its scenic best, with every patch of earth covered in greenery.
It was time to get the cameras out of the bag. We took a lot of halts for photography on the way, this delayed us a bit, but it was still worth it.
On riding a little further, we came by a really nice waterfall by the side of the road near ratnagiri. Lunch at goa be dammed we said, we don't get to see such places everyday, might as well make the most of it and stop for pics.
It was almost 11:30am, so we decided to leave from there and push on towards goa. We didn't get too far when nature decided to stop us again. This time in the form of a vast green meadow.
The rain gods realized that we were spending too much time in photography, so they decided to shower us with heavy rains, forcing us to pack the cameras and ride to goa without breaks. The rains lasted all the way to sawantwadi, and slowed us down quite a bit. It was already 2pm, reaching goa for lunch was out of the question, so we decided to halt at the hotel we had lunch at on our last goa ride. Both of us being hardcore non-vegetarians, we ordered fried prawns and chicken malvani for lunch. By the time we were done with lunch, the rain had also stopped. we rode non-stop to goa from here.
We reached goa at 4pm, and faced some bad traffic near the city of margao. It took us an hour to cross goa and get onto the road to Karwar. this was the first time we were riding on NH17 beyond goa, the roads were narrow with speeding trucks, but there were not many potholes here. We took a couple of breaks for photographs on this road.

We crossed the goa-karnataka border by evening and stopped for the customary border crossing pic
We reached Karwar at around 6:30pm, and were welcomed by a board saying "welcome to the costal city of karwar". we took a long break there since we had been riding almost nonstop since sawantwadi and honnavar was just 90kms ahead. The beach was right next to the highway so we waited there till sunset.
There was a warship museum nearby too, so we went in there as well
We left karwar at 8pm and started the final 90km ride to honnavar. most of the route was lit up with street lights, so the ride was pretty relaxed. we found a really nice hotel midway and stopped there for lunch. this time too the menu consisted of prawns friedrice, kebbabs, and chicken hundi. After lunch, we reached the town of honnavar and started looking out for a good hotel to stay at. After spending 2 days in the rain, i wanted to stay in a bit of luxury, so we got a nice AC room with hot water at hotel Kamats for just 900rs a night.
