  • Help Needed for a trip from Kolkata to Nainital

Hello all Xbhpians, I'm quite new to Xbhp so not that much experienced like you guys are. I want to know what are the essentials for such long tours..
    - what are the requirements to travel with a bike in another state, registered in WB ?
    - what precautions are a must to do ?
    - what should be the appropiate luggage ?
    - what extra accessories are needed to be carried ?
And guys I ride an FZ-S, done 1500 km's approx ( shameful for an F-Zian .......... ya I know but busy with exams & some other work) want to know that will it affect anyhow to my ride.

Permission (ILP) is required to visit North Eastern states except Assam. Not sure, but I think ILP can be made at the state checkposts.

Hey Abhishek, welcome aboard, good to see you planning such big ride. My 1st question would be have you done any long rides before?
First you have to know your capability of how many kms can you cover in a day. As per my calculation you will be riding around 2200kms one way to Nanital. So as per your convenience first chalk out a plan for day to day ride. The important things:

              1. Get your bike serviced before you leave, i.e. oil change, air filter clean and oil filter change, chain adjusted and lubed, tyre and alloy check, all electrical check, battery check.

              2. Check the weather pattern in every state you going to travel and accordingly pack your bag, rain coats, plenty of poly bags, and clothing as per necessary.

3, For bike since it has O-ring you will have carry a chain lube, a tubeless puncture repair kit, and some basic tools.

              4. There is no approval required from any govt authority to ride in another state, make sure you carry your Driving License, RC, Insurance, Pollution Certificate.

              5. If you have never done highway riding before, you should stick to left side and do not zip-zap as dont forget these roads are filled with buses and trucks who commands these NHs. So ride sanely and do not over stress yourself or the bike by zooming or speeding. Be patient and calm.

              6. As for the luggage it depends on you, yes extra bungee chords as always there and apart from essentials like tools and rain coat and a jacket, few woolens, rest depends on you.

              7. Your bike is new as per ODO, since both ways i.e. Kolkatta - Nainital - Kolkatta you will be doing around 4500kms, make sure to get the engine oil change and bike serviced after around 2000kms of riding. It can be done at any SVC which comes in between the route at the ODO touching 2K kms.

Thanks guys for your help, but cant understand ILP please explain it.
Though not planning for now as I'm planning to go at December as I have my exams in November, but preparations along with precautions are always necessary & ya guys forgot to say that I still had to persuade my parents for allowing me as on 25th December 2009, there was a severe accident of a rider residing in our locality, he was 24 but had such a impact on him that he almost forgot 80% about the past & now behaves like a 5 year old child (but didn't forgot to smoke).....

I used to tour many places in my RTR before and there will be no problem having a WB registration. You can roam anywhere in India with your same registration no. You don’t need any permission to ride Nainital, however if you plan to ride Ladakh or Nathula (North Sikkim) you may need ILP from Indian Army.

Abhishek -- Welcome to xbhp .

All us have become experienced with each Kms logged each time you are on road . As, said by SHivanshu , the points are rightly said . I want to add more to this

1.Take parents & yourself in full confidence . Making the full fun on the road is only possible when you have an proper back up from your parents & friends & not to forget your local mechanic if present . Dont forget to get your Cash-less mediclaim policy activated .

2.Another easiest way may be doing KOL-DELHI by train while coming to Delhi , from Delhi it will be easy to ride to Nainital . On return you can ride back to Kol by bike . See if you come by train you have more time & resources to explore North India other than Nanital .If you come to Delhi by train , you can do Del-Shimla-Leh , awsome place rather than 70% highway 30% hills .

3 . FZ-S wont be an issue ,its an good for lonely rider . Go for Cramster bags , good for touring .

4.Its more than 5+ months to arrange for plan & finance . And when you are coming too far away , Nanital is not that worth to visit after riding so many kms . North Sikkim is hell better than coming to this part of India to visit .You can do a good trip to Sikkim-Bhutan , it will give you a good exposure of hills , as you said you are new to biking . Its like Digha/Shankarpur for people living in Kol .

                    5. There is a lot to do before just taking this plan , meet people ,ride longer your bike , see urself riding 500+kms in a day & you said it will be in DEC , so also see your comfortability during darker conditions etc etc .

6.Proper riding gear is must like leg /elbow / Helmet/ riding boots or good Woodland is must .

Biking is always a fun but it must be done with proper planning that also includes the destination . Anything can happen to you when you are on road & it you are alone whom would be taking care of you . Try to convince another rider with you who becomes your Wingman .
Touring is the best for an bike as it gives the liberty to enjoy without an boundaries .

xBhpians are always there to help you . I will keep posting on this thread .

There is a lot to add , I will adding some more in days to come .
