  • An Itch called Chandertal (June 2011)

    The Prologue

It starts as a desire, a small wish that sprouts in the corner of your heart and then keeps on oscillating between your conscious and subconscious. Some of these either, in their due time, come true (The Good) or eventually fade away (The Bad) or else just simply keep growing (The UglyThe Itch, when my friends and I had to turn back despite being just 10 kms away from Chandertal lake, visiting the lake became an itch that grew more intense with time. You can imagine how it felt having to ride for 5 days, cover over a 1000kms and then return from being just 10kms away (Classic case of - Haath aaya muh na laga). I spent almost 2 years sighing about it and waiting for the moment. Meanwhile Arjun Thakur actually acted as a pacifier for me, coz not only was he with me in the failed attempt of 2009, he already had 3 previous failed attempts to Chandertal before that and one in 2010. The mere mention of Chandertal seemed to make ants crawl under his skin. Not that I was drawing any pleasure out of his misery but his condition reminded me of the song from the film Amrit, starring Rajesh Khanna Wrangler ride, which in my opinion was fabulous. Despite many disagreeing with this, Abhishek and I started planning for Daranghati. Just 4-5 days before our ride Abhishek got an SMS from his friend in Kaza that Kunzum is open. Instantly we shifted gears and started planning for Chandertal. I called Arjun and as expected he was game.

Before I start with the actual log, here are a few teasers for you guys:

I'd rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle.
Ride often, ride well, have fun.

In my opinion, nothing beats Pangong Tso, not even close. Its vastness, beauty, the terrain, accessibility, distance everything is much much more than others. Not that Chandertal is not great but experience at Pangong Tso is by far the best that I had.

                            Day1: Delhi - Gramphoo

                            << Back to Prologue

                            Day1: Delhi - Gramphoo
                            (640kms in 19 hrs)

Just couple of days before we were to begin our ride, we got discomforting news of Himachal Govt. implementing a mandatory permit for all outstation (Non HP registered) vehicles heading towards Rohtang Pass. Though it seemed good news for us because this sure would curb the traffic menace up there but at the same time I was worried about losing out on a few crucial hours in getting this permit done in Manali. We had limited time on our hand and this permit had the potential to push our ride by one additional day. So we decided to start a few hours early to ensure we make it to Manali in time for permit. While we were still not over the permit issue, we got news about a landslide and long jams towards Rohtang Pass. For once these things got me thinking why things were turning against us.

Anyhow, I reached at around midnight and helped him a little with last minute packing. We finally left his place at about 1AM. After tanking up, we met AbhishekZhilmil, Karnal. NH1 is undergoing construction (widening roads) and there are diversions every few kilometers, this stretch could very well be a pain during the day with traffic jams and loads of dust in this summer season but it was quite a breeze in the night. Not only was it great that there was no traffic but also the frequent diversions helped us stay alert and awake. As we crossed Ambala, Abhishek proposed an alternate route instead of Chandigarh. He suggested we should continue straight on NH1 untill Rajpura Toll and take a right from the Toll which goes straight to Ropar. I am so glad that we did this, as it resulted in saving time and kilometers with the added pleasure of riding on some straight newly laid beautiful tarmac. The stretch till Ropar and then further till Kiratpur is all expressway. Even the flyover on the railway line saves time. We took our second break near Kiratpur, enjoyed a cup of tea with some snacks and resumed our journey at around 7AM.

                            Right turn from Rajpura Toll:

Next were the twisties, I am sure apart from me, both Arjun and Abhishek had been waiting for them. Abhishek says these 250kms in plains is the tax that we need to pay for the hill ride. Well I would say, not a bad deal at all We made it to Bilaspur at 10am and hogged on the much needed Aaloo Paranthas. Roads from here till PandohManali by 2PM. The policeman at the check-post of ManaliRohtang Pass. Stopped at a road side shack, some 500mts from the fuel station and had like the most delicious Mutton Curry Rice ever, best part was 3guys eating their stomach full costed less than 3 burgers at KFC :P

                            Fun on Twisties:

The very things which got us worried (permit and jam due to landslides) turned out to be a boon for us. There was hardly any traffic and ManaliKothi (where permits are checked) and continued towards Marhi via Gulaba. Now I have crossed this stretch a number of times, but I have never seen it so Green. All my memories of sparse trees and mostly barren clifs and dirt got washed away by beautiful water streams running through these lush green, meadow like sceneries. I felt like I was riding through paradise. In my thoughts I think the alps would be something like this in summers.

Lush Green terrain near Rohtang Pass:

My day dreaming soon got muddied by slush and then loads of slush beyond MarhiArjun in the front and Abhishek

                            Slush:

We started descending from Rohtang Pass, and there was slush on the other side too, but not as much. Half way through Gramphoo, met an Israeli biker riding a Royal Enfield 500Gramphoo. Spend the night there and come back for the bike the next day. He agreed, we had to shuffle our stuff a little and then accommodate him on our bikes. Abhishek took him pillion till Gramphoo. We finally made it to Gramphoo at 8:30pm, cold, frustrated with slush and tired. Had a quick dinner and fell asleep.
