  • [Photo Feature]: Fall Foliage Rides in the Lower Hudson River Valley, NY

    Hi Guys,
Following is the a pictorial description of the last few weekend rides. The objective being to enjoy the changing colors of the trees in the Fall(Autumn) season here. Also to enjoy the last few riding days before the dead of winter sets in.

Lower Hudson river valley is the area roughly within 100 miles north of New York city. It is a very beautiful, lush green, hilly area that provides lot of twisty roads and scenic vistas, perfect for weekend getaways on bikes.

So the first day (Oct 23rd) started with a beautiful sunny saturday morning, we started and were greeted with these roads.

After about 50 miles we stopped at Bear Mountain bridge.
The video is hi-def. See it in 720p resolution for better quality.
Here's a video of the road that is used to approach the bridge.

The hill behind the bridge is Bear Mountain. Here is a pic from the top of the mountain from a trip last month. You can see the bridge in the picture. See more pics from that ride in post# 21.

    Moving on..

Reached the "village" of Cold Spring. Going through Main Street.

This is the Hudson River bank park in Cold Spring. Across the river its Strom King State Park.

The road that you see cut on the cliff of the hill in the back, is Route 218 aka Storm King Highway, another bikers' favorite twistie. I doubt I'll get a chance to go this year. I'll have a video for you guys when I get a chance to go.

Hudson Highlands state park coming up.

Passing hikers that will be hiking thru the park

A self portrait at Canopus Lake

Stopped on the way to get the blessings of Lord Buddha at the Chuang Yen monastery.

Some blessings for the bike as well

Brief break at Lake Gleneida at Carmel.

    The trees are on fire.

The sun is shining at the Croton Falls reservoir.

Finally the ride had to be cut short as we had to attend out friends' daughter's birthday. Though our friends just live 12 miles away, we took a small 85 mile detour to reach their place.

Thus ended a satisfying ride. I had planned a longer road plan that had to be cut short due to starting late & then this party.

I have some videos of the roads as well. I'll add them here as soon as I upload them on youtube.

More pics of the next day ride coming up.

            Happy Diwali Everyone....

@Sunny, @Bluevolt: Thanks for the appreciation..

@Rony: I don't know if my wife is lucky, I do know that I am lucky to have her as she is as enthusiatic about riding as me. She is always up for a ride anytime. Many times she has to hold on for dear life during some of the spirited rides.
But she is also much more practical than me. if only I could convince her that we need to have more than one bike, that would be heavenly.

@Pulsater: I try to take such detours more often. I work in Manhattan & have to take the train to reach there. Though I have a station literally next door, I take the train from a station 10 miles away as it has free bike parking & the road is twisty & curvy. I'll put the video of my "commute" as well, If only I could find the time to process the video & upload it. No access to youtube at work.

Ok, so back to the ride:
Next day, Oct 24, was also a nice mildly cool day(10`C) with overcast sky. As usual started late, around noon.

Here's a video marking the start of the ride. Route 22 is close to my house and is one of bikers favourite in the area.
The video is hi-def. See it in 720p resolution for better quality.

            Route 22

On our way, we crossed the towns of Bedford, Katonah, Golden's bridge, Purdys, North Salem.

Unfortunately, the ride had to be cut short as rain threatened the skies and gave us enough notice as to reach home without getting wet and it poured down after that.

More photos & videos of these & other rides coming up.

            Happy Diwali again.

Good set of pics; I like watching the fall time in US, they're so beautiful. Once I spotted blue leaves in MN & I couldn't take pics. If you do have anyone, I'd appreciate posting one for me. Tks.

Wishing you & your family a Happy & Prosperous Diwali too.

Very scenic ride and a beautiful mount as well. Thanks for sharing.

I know it first hand the very special feeling of sharing the joys of the ride with the better-half, though I am a little selfish as I conveniently give her the camera/logistic duties as well!

I am also eager to ride the back roads of upstate NY and New England on some future trip to the US.

                        Excellent photolog Picky.

The landscape looks so beautiful and colorful. It's nice that your wife and you are making the most of the weather on the bike. Even better that she shares the same enthusiasm. Good to see you both completely geared up.

I'd love to read about your bike and some experiences on it. An ownership report would be a good read. Do put together one for us whenever you find time.

Enjoy the season and a belated happy diwali to you both.

                        Ride safe.

Blue leaves...Interesting.... I'll keep an eye out, but it may be too late as most of the leaves have fallen.

Thanks Haroon. My wife is afraid that she might drop the glove if she tried to take a pic. I'll show her your Europe trip log, may be then she'll agree. (Great trip BTW, I was following it on xbhp/ADV).

uNY & New England area has some of the most beautiful roads & landscapes. Its even more beautiful during Fall season. If you plan a trip, try to come between September end to Mid October. That is the best time. Every turn is more beautiful that the other.

Harriman State Park & Sterling Forest

Last month, on our way to a friend's place, we took another detour through various parks & forests in Norther New Jersry & South-eastern New York. So the original 15 mile trip turned into a 77 mile ride through very beautiful twisty roads.

Though, most of the on-board pictures did not come out well due to excessive vibration, here are some of them:
