  • Scooter Ride To Coorg

Sometimes fun comes from unexpected sources, believe me.
Planned to ride down to Coorg (Mercara) on the 10th of last month. We (wife and me) usually do it on a Yamaha RX 100. At the last moment the bike became unavailable due to technical problems. We were really dissapointed since we made all plans and even contacted some homestays to stay at.

Decided we are going anyway, but we only had our 1989 model Kinetic Honda scooter available. Okay we said its about 270 k.m one way, let have a go.
Left early (about 5.30 a.m). Its the best time to avoid the traffic in Bangalore city.

The first thing you notice as you ride is that for the scooter 60 kmph is the optimum top speed. For us normally used to doing 80 to 100 on the highways, its quite a crawl. But even at a steady 60, you can cover quite some distance comfortably. The advantage is you can take in the sights and smell the flowers, so to speak.

8.am Maddur. Breakfast at Maddur Tiffanys. Took the bye pass onto Hunsur road after Srirangapatna.

Thankfully, the roads were superb except at Kushalnagar and near Madikeri. The ride was relaxed and cool though we had to take quite a few short breaks to stretch.

Reached Madikeri by afternoon and checked in to East End Hotel. Rode around Madikeri (Abbey falls, Rajas Seat). Returned on the 12th, visited Tibetan Golden Temple and The Shrine of St.Anthony near Periyapatna.

Reached home by evening, a little stiff (logged about 620 k.m), but cheers and kudos to our 21 year old Kinetic Honda scooter. Not too bad for the tough old girl uh ?

Planning to ride her to Goa next April. (we usually take it by train).

Meanwhile, doing Bangalore/Mysore/Calicut/Trivandrum/Kanyakumari/and back next month on the RX100.

    Cheers everybody,
    Ride Safe

A KiHo to Coorg! Helmets off to you and more so to your wife for managing this trip.

It must have been an wholly different experience!

Do share some pictures. I hope the Goa trip is not by KiHo too?

Thats great on Kiney.... and doing this Kanyakumari stretch on a RX 100 is fine, but doing with wifey is a real task man....cheers and all the best.

No Doubt the bike is capable of taking u safe....just have a check on the monsoon...
Never Give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

          Cheers

            Thanks Praful,
I know doing it on a KiHo seemed quite a task at first, especially since both wife and I are not so young any more. The guys at the hotel in Coorg were looking at us strangely, like we must be crazy or something. In fact a guy from Manchester who runs a small restaurant in the hotel campus came up and asked us "this bike has like one gear or something right ?"' how did you manage" ?
Its doable if you are not in too much of a hurry and don't mind the 60 k.m top speed. And really its a different kind of fun ambling along leisurely.
And yes we are riding the KiHo to Goa in April. We go every year but always take it by train. This time we decided to ride down. Plan to take the Shimoga/Honnavar/Karwar route with a halt at Shimoga or Jog Falls.
And yes again wife is a tough lady, just like our KiHo.
Want to upload some pics but still haven,t figured out exactly how.
            Thanks again,
            Bye for now

Interesting couple you guys are and admire the spirit to do this ride on the KiHo. Love it, have had it in the family for about 20 years. Just sold it a few months back.

I can imagine the look on their faces, about 3 years back me and my girl had ridden down to Coorg but I'd come down from Chennai and the homestay lady was quite shocked!

Anyways, Goa by KiHo. Amazing man! Btw, the Shimoga route gets pretty hot in April once you are past 11PM and anything beyond Sagar. So prepare accordingly.

              Anyways, awaiting pictures!

Yeah Ramesh, it was a different kind of trip on the Kiney. Frankly there are a few advantages- You can keep your bag in the front near your legs instead of the haversack which the wife lugs around like the proverbial albatross. No changing gears and your feet stay dry on wet roads.
The Kanyakumari trip is at the middle of next month. Hope the monsoons would have cleared by then. We are breaking journey at Calicut and Alleppy so should be manageable

                Cheers and good luck.

Wow this is only the third instance where I've read something about a kinetic. A 600+ km trip on a KiHo is unmanageable for many, including me. Kudos to you to have done it

How did the scooter perform under the stress of being run 300kms one side? did you take a break after every 70 odd kms?
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

                    Hi Parth,
Yeah I know how it seems. Even we were not very sure before we took off, but the KiHo was cooler than we were ! Of course we cruised at max top speed of just 60 kmph and we did take some short breaks (coffe, lunch, stretching). The roads were good so that helped. Any way now we know what she can do so we are planning to ride to Goa next April with one break in between.
Got some photos of the trip and am trying to upload through Picasa. Having some problems uploading but hope to do so soon.

                    Take Care,
                    Cheers!

Would like to mention an incident at a party the other day. Friends were ribbing me saying 'you crazy guy, riding a KiHo to Coorg, that too with wife, couldn't you take a bigger bike ?'. Actually we went on the Kiney because that was the only bike available that day. Then when you think about it, If we had done the trip on say a Harley Davidson, people would have said "Coorg on a Harley? No big deal.
Its like saying Sachin hit a century. "So whats new?" they'll say.
                      Harbhajan hit a century ! Wow !
                      Hope you get the drift

                      Cheers Guys,
                      Happy Riding

                              Hi Pratheepan,

Thanks buddy. Sorry about your KH. I know its difficult holding on to older bikes while the new ones come in. So many issues like space, finances, maintainence and so on. I mainly use the KH for city use (Bangalore) because of the heavy traffic.
Any way now that I know what she can do, we are riding her to Goa next April, of course with a break at Shimoga or Jog. Saddlesore and stiff backs are part of the ride, no fun without it any way.
Have some pics on Picasa, will upload them shortly.

                              Good Luck
