If you are planning to take the above Mysore-Goa route, here are the road conditions from Mysore:

Mysore -Hassan: Beautiful Single lanes, very Scenic

Arsikere-Tarikere-Shimoga: Good single lanes ,part of NH 206.

Shimoga-Sagar-Thalaguppa-Mavingundi: Except for 2-3 kms before and after Sagar , the roads are very good.Single lanes throughout.

From Mavingundi, you can proceed til Mensi and take deviation or proceed till Sirsi and Yellapur.Fantastic roads till Yellapur,Single lanes with good quality. From Yellapur you can enter Anshi National Park. Sorry have not been on this stretch off late.

Mangalore to Goa is one Single Road,NH17. Traffic density is very high.considering the road conditions. Will be butter smooth at times and gravel patch at another.Since Rains have subsided, might a bit of relief now.

The above updates are as of Oct 2011.

All Rivers, Dams etc are running full capacity, connectivity on major sections affected.

The case is the same with all other alternative routes. Yes all routes are badly affected, If NH17 after the makeover is in good shape, that can be your best alternative. But getting to NH17 from mysore will be a pain

Road status as on August 28 - Mysore - Goa -> Went through Shimoga, Honnavar, karwar -> Goa
Most of the roads were good, the stretch from channaryapatna to Tarikere is bliss
The roads (10km before / after ) jog falls were potholed , but ok enough for 2 wheelers. [It was raining/foggy].
Honnavar-Karwar-Goa ..Double lane but decent roads.

Return From Goa to mysore was Goa- Belgaum [ Via sawantwadi, amboli ghats etc] ,lots of bad potholed roads after samantwadi till belgaum but extremely good views
Belgaum - Hubli - Devangere -Hiriyur - Mysore.

A small caution: Don't ever take the hiriyur- Mysore via nagamangala at night since it's extremely deserted with rarely anyone in sight :|, Unmakred humps, Sudden turns and lots of truck traffic.
