  • When I rode without a plan.... only motive was to enjoy

When mountains call, you have to pack your bags and leave.' - Everyone

I had ignored this call for a very long time and so the effects were more than visible, atleast to me. Some plans made with friends got cancelled. A plan for a group ride couldn't materialise due to an infected ear which made it very painful to put on a helmet. And some other factors were responsible for me not been able to take my bike out, take myself out of mudane usual life.

Everytime I looked at my bike, it said - "Either you ride soon or atleast unlock the handle so I can take a walk of my own."

So I planned for a ride which was a little longer than weekend. And this time it was in a mode which I love most - SOLO. The first destination was fixed as Sangla. With no other place or any itinerary in mind we started..... me & 220

This was an unplanned ride where the only plan was to meet my friends at Mussorie on saturday evening. I had 5 days in hand. As mentioned earlier, I had fixed the first point as Sangla and so we started (me & 220).... on monday night at 11:30. The route from Delhi to Panchkula was not boring this time as slight chill in weather made ride much pleasing than in summers. Not a bad start, eh!!

A friend was supposed to meet at Panchkula red light. Called him from Ambala to inform that it would take me another 20 mins to reach Panchkula, thus I applied ultra-intelligence to offset the effect of any delay from his side. He was there & fuming when I reached. After exchanging a customary round of pleasantries (desi version), I moved ahead. Riding in hills in dark has its own charm and I was enjoying myself thoroughly. It was cold in wee hours of morning and after crossing Solan it suddenly felt lot more cold. My eyes frantically searched for a tea joint, found one soon, had few cups of tea and carried on.

The road deteriorates after Shimla and everybody knows it. It was a mess till Narkanda last time and so I was prepared for a bumpy ride. HP Government had planned otherwise and gave me a pleasant surprise. After Theog it was newly laid tarmac with not even a single bump or hole.... so I ripped, a little more and I enjoyed lot more. Though I must admit that I was expecting this surprise to end after every blind turn but it didn't. The road has been built till Narkanda which is good news.

It was 10:50 am when I stopped at a shack for breakfast near Jeori. I was pretty happy with my progress. I decided to take it slow from there as the remaining distance was not much. Reached Sangla at 3 pm. I contemplated on going to Chitkul and staying there overnight but was advised against it by locales as most of the guest houses in Chitkul had closed. I realised it the next day that going to Chitkul would have been a better choice.

The evening was spent strolling in the Sangla market. I even went for a small walk downhill and remembered GOD while coming up. I was panting so bad that my lungs were ready to come out of my mouth. Thats when I decided to start jogging after completing the trip.

          Enroute Kingal

          DAY 2

I got up early and packed my bag. Plan was to go to Chitkul, spend ample time, come back to Sangla and then see what could be done. I started at 07:30 am towards Chitkul which is just 24kms from Sangla. It was cold but bearable with kit on.... my hands went almost numb when I stopped first for taking a snap and took my gloves off. Phew!!

I had a very sweet tea & nice maggi for breakfast at Chitkul. Most of the hotels at Chitkul were closed but one, where I had breakfast, was open. Thats when I realised I could have come to Chitkul straight last evening. Well next few hrs were spent chatting with the hotel owner, at the riverbed, riding further & stopped by FRH officials, going to riverbed again, and finally hitting the road back to Sangla.

          continues.....
