  • Saddlesore attempt in the 3rd week of august.

    Hi guys,
I know there are a many threads which can help me in training myself for the saddle sore, but i wanted to start a new thread for a few reasons, mods can merge it, if they find it necessary.

I'm from hyderabad and planning to attempt the saddle sore in august, i have been doing 200+ kms runs on the nehuru outer ring road for quite some time now, have done it 10 times atleast... and also did a 500km trip. I need help from you guys in 2 aareas.
    1.Which route to choose?
I think, its better for me to go 820+kms and come back 820+kms, so total would be 1640+, but i'm totally clueless about where to start from and where to end it.
Also where to take a u-turn if im ending and starting at the same place, there are lots of options but i want you guys to single out one option.

2.I kind of get lonely during travelling, during one of these trips(macherla-hyderabad),i didnt feel lonely when i was following high speed innova's and swifts all along the state highway, but once i hit NH7 the roads were empty and very dark, i felt very lonely and felt like going home asap... So, it would be nice if my fellow bhpians, who want to do the saddle sore come along with me, i'm ready to reschedule my saddlesore. It would be nice to do a group saddle sore, perhaps a new record :P
I'm posting this well in advance so that people can think about it and plan it in case any one wants to do the saddle sore.
But this doesnt mean that ill cancel my trip if nobody is coming with me, i'm ready to go alone,no matter what comes in my way.
P.S. I also think there should be a separate thread where a list of members completing the saddle sore must be kept, along with the details like their bike models and age, if there one one such thread , please guide me to it

The NH7 is your best bet for the Saddlesore. Hyd-Kurnool-Anantapur-Bengaluru-Salem and back.
But aren't bikes banned on the ORR? Dude the SS is not about Daredevilery. It is all about Passion, Concentration, and Fitness of both the ride and rider.

umm... what makes you think its daredevilry?...
and bikes banned on the orr part, i think some rules are plain stupid
do you really follow the speed limits on every street, there are some ridiculously funny traffic rules and its better not to follow them

Sai - Do a simple test. Just see if you're able to cover 1000 Kms in 24 hours. That is more than sufficient to build your confidence. What I mean is take baby steps; I too would vote for NH7. Do a BLR-HYD up & down & that should give you more than 1000 Kms. If you're able to complete that run in about 15-16 hours. Then you're all ready. Good Luck.
Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle
Awareness + Skill is what keeps you out of harm's way

That sounds like a good idea, i'll definitely think about it, i have 3 more doubts.
1.Is the google map accurate in measuring distance? Can i rely on it completely?
2.Is it a good idea to buy a gps navig. sys.... will it be easy to use?
(need inputs on this a little urgently)
3.If i take national highway7 and go to salem via bangalore, i guess ill have to deal with a lot of traffic in bangalore, so im thinking of 2 other routes to avoid bangalore Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh to Salem, Tamil Nadu - Google Maps
Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh to Salem, Tamil Nadu - Google Maps

And moreover, the route via bangalore is just 783 kms...

Dude, I'd rather worry about being safe than think about dodging rules (stupid or otherwise). From what I've seen and experienced, a day long ride needs a lot of careful planning, physical and mental alertness and also ensuring that you've got a reliable ride. Like aargee mentioned, you could probably do the Hyd-Bengaluru ride just to test your skills and also gain some confidence while you're at it. There was a guy who attempted the SS on Hyd-Blr-Salem Route, but had to give up halfway cos his bike siezed. He's a Hyd. guy as well and you can probably PM him and get some more info. All the best in your planning and hope you crack it in the first attempt. There are not too many Hyderabadi's who've finished an SS successfully.

I have read the thread of that guy( for that matter, i guess i read all the threads on saddlesore...(might have missed a few)...
                  I even contacted him...
And about the 'day long ride requiring skill, planning etc,...' well i cant exactly say im skilled , but i have got stamina and im planning well...
Dont really wanna argue with you,so leave that matter...

@aargee-i have a query for you in my last post please check it

sai: do read up the june issue of xbhp too for endurance riding

From someone who has done ss & bb both in same attempt I am thinking that you have posted this without first reading through homework material

not contradicting or discouraging you in any way but you do sound cocky from your posts

ps: for group SS record already 10 people have done it successfully

IBA confirmed that only 14 riders from India have suscesffuly completed iba certification from India. Its as of the latest updated list.

Could not find the mentioned group SS names in it... A lot of people claim they have done SS, n then a lot of them have actually done but never got certified for one reason or other. currently the no stands at 14 from India. Only one person has currently done SS suscessfuly with certification from Andhra Pradesh.

                        perfectly true.
this group though is in the certification process.

also I think there were 5 xbhpians from coimbatore who did a successfull group SS sometime back

the two alternate routes you have mentioned, take my word ....you will regret getting on that route. I am sure you havent ridden on that personally. I have done salem to hyd in both the mentioned alternate routes not too long back.

Definetley nt SS material , not even close.

I am sure you would agree with the fact that the term "saddlesore " can actually be used when you are officially certified. Till then it remains an attempt. In India we can find numerous claims and bogum claims as well. What i feel is till one officially gets certified "suscessful saddlesore " term must not be used rather " attemt SS or awaiting certification etc " shld be used.

                            These are the current 14.

                            Melroy Alphonso

                            Senthil Kumar
                            Ketan Nikharge
                            Ranga Prasad
                            Anubhav Ravichandran

                            Vinu Viswanathan

Got the details from IBA itself for rides through May 1, 2011.
