  • [Photo Feature]: Ninja goes to Spiti!

    Hey guys!
I just want to share my experiences on a trip to Spiti in July 2011. Me and a friend (so called) decided to go to Chandrataal. He’s got a Bult (Bullet). Please stay hooked if you want to know how we ended up in Spiti and what happened at Chandrataal. As the later event is so catastrophic that it will change the entire trip, entire outlook (towards life) & lastly, the entire friendship (so called).

Prologue: I am an investment banker and this is my first bike. I am not an avid biker but have bought this awesome looker for weekend/ fun rides. I (just like everyone) play cricket in my neighbourhood park every Sunday. Most of the guys, who are my cricket buddies, are younger to me and almost all of them have Bult (Bullet). When Royal Enfield launched classic 500 in later half of 2009, I was quite keen to buy one. The other option that I was considering was a baby Ninja. I even test drove the 500 but when I saw a Ninja in the Vasant Vihar PRB showroom, I was bowled over by her awesome looks. I was in love.

                      Ninja

But and a big B U T was that I have done a blunder and booked a Ninja instead of the mighty 500. Now what?

Ninja, work in a Bank; was his companion on this trip.

I suggested Mr. X that we head towards Chandrataal. I learnt through one of the xbhp forums that Prateek is also planning a similar trip. I thought that as we are only 2 riders we can join them, but they were planning to leave Delhi a week before us and thus this idea fizzled out. We did more planning and then came a day when we got to know about the Manali- Rohtang madness, 6- 7 hour long traffic jams; govt. deciding to introduce permits for non HP registered vehicles. Though, later on it was clarified that bikers are exempt from the same but still we got quite worried and then eureka; I suggested that we head towards Shimla and then continue towards Kaza and cross Kumzum-la to reach Chandrataal. Mr. X was hesitant at first, as this would be a 7-8 days trip, but when I forwarded him some snaps of the Kinnaur- Spiti valley he agreed. I made the following travel plan:-

                      Day 1 Delhi- Shimla- Narkanda
                      Day 2 Narkanda- Poh
                      Day 3 Poh- Kaza
                      Day 4 At Kaza
                      Day 5 Kaza- Chandrataal
                      Day 6 Chandrataal- Manali
                      Day 7 Manali- Chandigarh
                      Day 8 Chandigarh- Delhi

We would be roughly covering around 1,700 Kms in 8 days and we were unaware of the road conditions beyond Shimla- Narkanda. A lot was said online about the road conditions and possible water crossings between Chandrataal and Manali, but nothing much was written about the condition of the road between Narkanda to Chandrataal.

                      Stay hooked guys!
